The better you become personally as a drummer, the scarier Virgil’s playing becomes as you begin to understand just how far he has taken the art. I think you need a fair bit of experience to even appreciate what he’s doing as a listener, let alone being able to execute it on the kit. It’s out of reach for most of us technically. The odd groupings, poly rhythms and coordination this man has developed over decades have really taken drumming to a level that has never been achieved by anyone previous. Massive respect for the sacrifices Virgil must have made to get to this level.

I saw Virgil do a clinic years ago. Saw two hi hats up front on his setup. Then during his performance I was hearing a distant chick sound while he was playing and then I found some of the attendees were pointing to a 3rd hi hat way in the back of his setup. Never been in such awe seeing a drummer with so much talent! Virgil is indeed a legend in his own rite!

This is the best drummer in the world right now, and it's not even close. If you don't like or appreciate what he's actually doing, you don't understand it. @@Juju2mangue I think one of the main differences between Donati and Peart is that Neal played the same parts, the same way every time and Vigil composes as he plays. Also, Virgil can swing and Neal couldn't. However, there's really no need to compare them.

@@farshimelt Peart played iconic drum parts for stadiums ; the audience was able to recognize every patterns and every fills, that's iconic (as a guitar part could be iconic).
