I'm an artist that paints with acrylics on canvas. We take a small amount of paint and thin with water to create splatters like snow or pebbles on sand. You can use an old toothbrush or a wet paint brush to make gorgeous random spots.

Yes! I’ve done that many times too. Great effect. My daughter is also an artist. She just recently painted me a nighttime woods scene. The splatters she did look like fireflies. It’s gorgeous.

The four page units to make pockets makes so much more sense than the video i followed. We left 4 at front and back then leave 2 tear 5, leave 2 tear 5 to the end. The pages were glued together with the torn areas sandwiched between them. The add pockets to the pages you've built. The one I did would be better for a collage/ glue book. I need to make one like this as a junk journal.

Wow! I wish I saw this before I attempted and altered book. I am doing mine (first altered book) totally different. I only tore out about half my pages and it is already what some call a "Hippo Mouth". At least I know how I will finish my cover. Thank you so much and looking forward to watching the rest of the parts to this journal. I hid where I tore out my pages between the pages I kept and ran a thin drizzle of glue where they were torn out to help keep the book intact. ☺♥

I have a paperback of the town that I grew up in. It has really old photos from the early 1900’s. I have plans to use the photos in a journal that I’ll be making in the future. Plus my mom was into genealogy big time so she had photocopied photos of her relatives that date back to the 1800’s.

You can hide the leftover rips by including the rips inside one of your pockets. Love altered books! They are my favorite lately.

I am a manager at our dollar tree and we have so much craft stuff and books. The price will go up after Christmas but it will only be like 25 cents. Still not too bad. Great video

Oh good! I've started an altered book about 5 days back. It's taking me forever! I've never done one. Seen Gayle counting out how to assemble one so this is my first. I tried finding more videos but most don't show any other paper pocket folds. I love how your cover turned out. Once you did the splatters, your top section looks like lace now! I hope Michael Criton never finds out but I'm using one of his dinosaur books. I believe it's the size of yours. BTW, I'm only half done applying my papers to the pages. So hope you have 2 or 3 more in this series at least!

I Also get my books from the Dollar Tree. I was getting books from Goodwill, but they have upped the price of books! (You would pay $8-$10 for good as new. I do occasionaly order some when bundled off etsy. Or if there s one I really, really want. I use the ones from Dollar Tree, remove the paages from them. Then I separate each page and tea dye them so they look very old.. Thanks for showing this!

Hey Sherry, no I didn't use pinking sheers. Now, mom (E) has pinking sheers and uses them. I just used my regular scissors and did little wonky edges on the ones I fussy cut for this journal.

How do you determine when to use gesso or collage podge?

I use gesso to prep a surface (white), like a primer get it ready for other things that will go on top whether that’s paint, material, paper, ink, whatever. I also seal layers as a “top coat” with clear gesso. Clear gesso is also great to write over the top of once dry. I use collage pauge as a glue when I’m adding lots of pieces or layers to a surface.

Would you say that you are removing approximately 50% of the pages, with the removed pages evenly spaced through the book? I have been trying forever some time to understand how ro calculate how many pages to remove, evenly spaced.

Oh lots, lots more than 50%. There were over 360 pages in this book. We kept 6 pages in the front, 6 in the back and 10 of the 4 page sandwiches in the middle. All other pages were torn out.

I went looking for the same book and couldn't find it at any dollar tree here in Texas. Can we use any other book even if it does not hold the same amount of pages.

oh yes! Any book will do. Just look for one with around 350ish pages to get as many pockets as I’ve got in this one.
