Here is the best way to alter the gaps at the bust line on a tank top. When the tank fits across the bust but not at the armholes, arghhh.
I recently redid this video because it was a little dark hope this version is better.

I now appreciate my mother so much more. She altered all of my clothes from a kid until age 65 when she passed at 97! She begged me to learn how to sew but everyone in the family did it for me. I regret it. I just bought a machine and at age 73 I’m trying to learn. I wish I had her next to me. This video reminded me of her. ❤

Ahhh. Thank you for this. My mom sewed for us too. (But stopped when I learned how!) I have some lil dresses that I treasure, she made them for me and my sister back in the 60s. Good luck with your sewing lessons, let me know if you need some help!

You're so welcome. Yes, most people always think about bringing the two sides equally together not thinking the front can be a different shape and size than the back or vice versa.

I found found it helpful to start stitching a half inch in from the edge, and backstitch to the bumpy edge, then sew forward… easier to get started and reduces how much thread gets put into the area. Thanks for the idea about realigned side seams.

I still have that kind of ruler. I forgot why my instructor required the students to get that kind of ruler. I think it’s called grid ruler. You’re right about the cost associated with shop alternations. Learning the techniques is so much more resourceful. Think of all the clothing thrifting that can be done! 😃🙏

Very helpful! I definitely can't afford $20 tank tops, but I get free clothes from my local Buy Nothing group and want to be able to alter them to fit me well. The arm hole gap issue compiles at least 50% of my "future sewing projects" pile. 😄

I know what you mean. The bust gap is one of the most common fit problems. We all come in such different sizes. It's hard for the manufacturers to make a standardize fit. Glad you found the video helpful!

@@FutureFashionDesigners It worked the second time! The first time it was a cheap rib knit that was losing its strength. It looks better on me than it did, but it's not great, and now I know a bit more about how to assess if an alteration is possible on a garment. Second one, on a top where the fabric had enough structural integrity, it worked great!

I appreciated your demonstration of realigning the front and back seams; however, I could still see the gaping on the upper side seam. Perhaps a side-by-side photo would have shown the difference in the garment before and after the alteration was made.

Sometimes you have to take a bit from the top of the shoulder seam as well. Sometimes ( depending on the size of the gap) you only need to take it up at the shoulder seam. Has anyone tried tithe shoulder seam method?
@FutureFashionDesigners
@FutureFashionDesigners 11 ай бұрын
Hi, yes, that is another way to do it. All depends on where the gaps are if the gap is higher and more horizontal than you take it up from the shoulder if the gap is lower and a little more vertical than you take it from the side. And sometimes a little of both is what is needed 😊

Q: Which stretch stitch?
@barbaraferron7994
@barbaraferron7994 8 ай бұрын
Q: Which side did you make narrower, front or back? There's another thing to make more bust room. Make the front about 2" longer than the back. Stretching the back near the bust. You pick out the entire side length. (If you pick out both needle threads at either end, center thread first, they will pull out in one piece.) Move the front piece up and secure then stretch the back side as you sew it back together. Then cut to the right length.

Humm, sounds complicated, 😕 this way there's basically a busy dart that gets shifted out of the armseye.

I wish you would’ve done this on the olive tank top. It would’ve been much easier to see. And unfortunately, it looks like there’s still a lot of gaping in your shirt after you adjusted it so maybe addressing how to decide how much to take in and when you need to add a dart would be a great topic for another video.
@FutureFashionDesigners

Hi Susan , Yeah, I wish I would have done the olive top first 🙃. This video was made before I figured out how to lighten up the frame. 🤔. So then I made another video with better lighting. Here's the link kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibGZapqq0dS-l2Q.html That gap was very large, so since fabric is not sheet metal, I was happy that I got it reduced considerably. Darts, I don't like to add because I don't like the look of them, especially on a knit. I did this on about five of my tank tops some came out better than the others.
