Alternator / Power Steering Belt Replacement: Toyota Lexus V6

Here's how to replace the alternator and power steering belts on a
Toyota or Lexus with a V6 engine.
The serpentine belts are responsible for driving accessories off of the crank of the engine. In the Toyota V6 engines, they drive the alternator and A/C compressor on one belt, and the power steering pump on the secondary belt.
Replacing the belts is a good idea if they are worn, cracked or are squealing on cold starts. Belt failure can lead to sudden loss of steering, a discharged battery or an ineffective A/C system.
The procedure is simple, and you don't need air tools. A ratchet set with 10, 12 and 14 mm sockets will work. A breaker bar with a 22mm socket is recommended to turn the crank pulley clockwise to aid in slipping the new belt on. You'll also need your tire iron, jack, jack stands and a crow-bar or flat screwdriver to tension the power steering belt.
A visual diagram is provided in the beginning of the video to aid where the bolts are located on the engine. The alternator belt uses a pinch bolt and a long tension bolt, in addition to its pivot bolt. The power steering bolt has a tension bolt and a pinch bolt that slides on a track. Tensioning the power steering belt can be difficult since the position of the pump, determined by the position if your pry bar, determines the tension.
This video showed the procedure on a 2005 Lexus ES330 with the 3.3L 3MZ-FE V6 engine. The procedure is the same for 1MZ-FE (3.0L) and 3MZ-FE (3.3L) Toyota Camry V6, Solara, Sienna, Highlander, Avalon and Lexus ES300, RX300 and RX330.

Thanks so much for posting this. I changed the alternator belt but not the power steering belt. I figured if that belt fails, car still driveable. Releasing that pivot bolt on the power steering seems above my limited skill set! Didn’t want to start things I couldn’t finish! Thanks again! You’re instructions were spot on.

What car did you try this on, if it was a bigger vehicle (Sienna, Highlander RX330) I understand your difficulty in reaching that bolt. The sedans (ES300, Camry, Avalon, Solara) are easier to access from the side. If your having difficultly regardless, remove the dog-bone engine mount and its bracket holding it to the engine and you'll have plenty of clearance to get at it from the top.

After a while the rubber belt starts to deteriorate and crack. It also looses traction on the pulleys and start slipping and screeching. Eventually, it could break and leave you without power steering, A/C and a charging system while driving. Basic maintenance.

It works well to use a phillips screwdriver in the bolt slot to tension the power steering belt. The method you show with the flat blade screwdriver going somewhere above the belt is way more difficult. Also, it's possible to get the belts on without prying with a screwdriver...safer for your belts too. Thanks for the video...worked great for a 2004 Highlander 6 cylinder.

The power steering pump pivot bolt on top of and slightly behind the pulley is the most hidden and difficult to access bolt I have ever experienced. No wonder you could not show us how you got your ratchet on it! At first I did not believe it was even there and I was going to tell you so. I finally found it by feel only. I could not get enough clearance with my older Craftsman 1/2" ratchet, so I put the 12mm 12 point socket on a breaker bar and was then able to get enough clearance to get a bite on it. After breaking it loose, I switched a 3/8" ratchet to further loosen it. My Chilton manual makes no mention of the pivot bolt, only of the belt tension adjusting bolt which passes through the slotted bracket. Thank you for this helpful video. I wish I would have watched it first and learned the proper loosening sequence before breaking the alternator belt tension adjusting bolt in half.

I just want to say, "Thank you so much, speedkar99!" After reviewing several videos to perform this belt change, yours is the one that truly helped. The diagrams were extremely beneficial (for me, at least). I had to let up more tension than I had expected and also had to get a little physical with the alternator itself to get it to shift, but I couldn't have done any of this without your DIY video. Thanks. Very helpful. Both the location and size of wrenches for the bolts were very helpful. The only difference is how difficult it is to break loose these bolts if they haven't been loosened before! On my 2002 Highlander for the power steering bolt, I used a breaker bar, a six point socket, a small extension, placed it on the bolt from the wheel well, then reached through the hood to grab the breaker bar and loosen the bolt. Took quite a while to figure out this approach.

Thank you. I discovered today that I didn't need to loosen the bottom bolt to adjust the tension. Instead, I loosened the top left bolt, then used the tensioner bolt to adjust the tension. For a while I thought I had to loosen the bottom bolt, but once the top one was loose, the tensioner worked fine. Then tightening the top left bolt buttoned it up.

I think this belt runs both the steering pump and the alternator.

@@PerryCallasI might be wrong but those are different belts. At least on my 02 camry SE it is.

Thanks once again for doing these videos. I was able to replace my belts. However now when I start the car I hear a quick squeal then it goes away. Do I have it on too tight or too loose?
@fauguy23

I noticed other videos show them loosening the Alternator pivot bolt first, then the pench and tension bolt to remove the belt. Then when to put it back on they pull up on the alternator (since it's loose) and while they pull it up, tighten the alternator pivot bolt, then the front tension bolt, and lastly the pench polt.

Great video Speedkar99! I would like to add that I had a very difficult time putting the new AC belt on because it was so tight, but after taking the adjuster bolt out and using a prybar between the CV axle housing and the bottom part of the pump, I was able to easily slip on the belt. Of course I had to use the prybar again to place the bolt back in the hole going the other direction! But I honestly couldn't have done this without your great tutorial. Great job dude. Now we need a better way to replace the spark plugs!!!

At 2:56 you show a tool already in place. It would be really helpful to see the tool setup and how to approach the nut. I ultimately had to approach from below to get leverage. Could not loosen the nut via your approach. To get the rear belt on had to put large socket on front pulley and rotate. ... 1997 Camry XLE V6

Dang, does the 2003 camry v6 not have a tensioner pulley for easy belt removal and installation like the v4?

When you put the new power steering belt on and put tension on it, which bolt do you tighten first?

On a 2000 es300, the top bolt for the power steering belt is super hard to access and I had to pray to get it off, literally, but it immediately came off after! I also had to remove a fuse box in the front of the engine to get to the tensioner bolt for the alternator belt. Thanks for the vid!

in addition, es330 provides much more room to work than the es300...

+zellerized I disagree. The 97-01 generation of 1MZ-FE Camry/Solara/ES300 has way more space in the engine compartment than the 3MZ-FE 02-06 Camry / ES, I have both so that's what I can say. Yes that fuse box comes out on the Solara/ES300 to access that alternator bolt easier.
@zellerized
@zellerized 8 жыл бұрын
+speedkar99 -- it seemed that the 300 had less room because I had to move stuff out of the way to access the bolts on the alternator, and it was still tight for me, but in your vid of the 330 you easily slapped the wrench right on those bolts..

camilo11315 What do you not understand? Procedure is same as removal. You might need to rotate the engine to get the belts to slip onto the crank pulley.
