Technically rapping isn't music it's poetry. That's all he was saying. Jerry played shows with people rapping, Bob and Pigpen did a decent amount (it was just slower back then bc people didn't put as much time into learning the skill). Hip Hop IS a type of music that incorporates rapping. But saying "the roof is on fire" over a drum beat technically wouldnt be music because its just rhythm, no melody. Jerry wasnt a bitter old man, he just believed that music had melody harmony AND rhythm which i think is still true.
