Bob Weir, John Mayer, Sean Hurley & Jim Keltner - Song originally from the Grateful Dead

This was the day they first met. Mayer was recording at Don Was’ studio and Bob stopped by to say hi to Don. Don introduced John to Bob and John invited him to play that night on the show he was guest hosting. They jammed for 2 hrs in sound check and it went so well they both decided they should do it more…and Dead and Co was born. Fun 7 years. I’m going to miss seeing that band.

there's just one little mystery i'm trying to figure out . . . i keep reading references to the story of don was introducing them at was' studio, but mayer showed up (unannounced, as i understand it) at the artist hospitality area of the jammy awards in 2002 (roseland ballroom, nyc) before the evening's festivities & pretty much asked if he might join in some how . . . and he did. bobby was part of the line-up that nite w/ ratdog, as was oteil, who was part of a full allman bros band surprise performance (some members of the allmans were scheduled). i'm having a hard time trying to figure out how john & bobby - and oteil - may have gone thru the eve without meeting each other . . . there were a lot of players there, but not so many that they might not have met. google: jammys 2002 roseland ballroom - you should find some reviews of the evening

It's crazy to know that John mayer heard this song and stopped what he was doin to find out who it was, discovered the dead, then has this opportunity to jam with the legend himself after hosting a show. When I first heard he was gonna be playing with dead and co I was super skeptical as I had only heard his pop stuff but after catching about 15 of their shows I am blown away with how well he was able to get into the groove with the masters. Of course he's no Jerry but he def holds the torch. Never let the music die.

What's hard for me to believe is that -- not Truckin', or Casey Jones, or Sugar Magnolia, or Saint Stephen or Bertha -- but ALTHEA was the song that turned on the Dead switch for Mayer. Truth be told, when the GD would play Althea I would hit the can, then get another beer! 😎 But we love John for that ... ❤

Mate, Mayer has always had the chops. Listen to his playing back in early 2000s. Come Back to Bed As/Is version, Covered in Rain etc. He's always had it. I'd say his playing was much more exciting and "technical" compared to now (excluding Dead and Co. shows) but nowadays, he's a lot more chill and likes to lay back a little bit more. He doesn't have anything to prove anymore I guess.

Totally different styles? Ever listened to an isolated track? Jerry was every style simultaneously. Shifting modes, tones and effects so fast as to numb a theoretical physicist before he could calculate. Ive tried to wrap my head around it, the only explanation I can think of is that Jerry brought the perspective of a banjo, mandolin, lap steel, fiddler, dulcimer to lead guitar.

He played rhythm for two nights, long nights, with the house band, Terrapin Family Band. He was respectful, blended in, and watched the lead guitarist like a hawk, studying with focused concentration. The vids are here someplace. After the concert, John & Phill played a set at the bar there. Phill is smiling the whole time. John sang Sugaree and I can't-recall-my-brain...It looks to me, & others I've talked to that it was then the deal was made, and blessed by Phill.

Have you guys all seen Bobs biography? His life is an inspiration, and Jerry played a big part of that. Love ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜✨Grateful

"John-Boy"s playing his come lightyears since even this. 8 years on the road with Bob Weir has him at Super Saiyan. It's not channeling Jerry; it's damn close, but it always has a JM flair. What a thing to have watched it happen, almost in real time ✌🏻

I'm with you, man. The band has really gelled the last couple of years. They just played Folsom last week and absolutely killed it. The drone show was pretty slick too. A shame it is coming to an end 😞

@@JC-lk3oy I'm in Aurora and couldn't afford tickets 😭 I heard all about how amazing it was, though. I’ll be snagging tapes 100%! I have a collection of their Colorado shows

@@ODUBlue Sorry to hear. Ticket prices have been absurd. Last year's boulder shows are available on Tidal to stream, so I'm sure physical copies should be available too. The second night last year was fantastic.

Jim Keltner!!! That guy is a legend. Played on the Wilburys, played in Harrison's touring band... played with Petty in studio... Wow.

Bob Weir, Jerry, the Grateful Dead awesome. I have seen them many times. Personally I don't think their is a better guitarist than John Mayer to play the guitar parts. I have been playing guitar a long time. I have a lot of respect for John Mayer. This was great to watch. They should travel get a voice to try and fill Jerry. Keep Mayer, and of course Weir. I would pay to see them all play as the dead.

John started listening to the Grateful Dead, when Letterman retired, Craig Ferguson expected he was getting Dave's spot, when he didn't, he quit. John was an interim host until they got what's his name James Cordon or whatever as host of the Late Show Thank you Craig!

THAT WAS AWESOME!! After watching this and the Truckin' vids, fears of a Dead/Mayer tour have been quelled. I always knew John was a hell of a musician (check out his John Mayer Trio! It's rocking!!), but was kind of on the fence of how his style would blend with Dead music. It's works. It helps add a bit of that mid-late 70's Dead groove again. I'm digging it.

I wish John still played a Strat. His Silver Sky is nice, but he belongs on a Strat. I'd specifically like to hear him play Jerry's "Alligator".

I think of the communication (relationship, if you will) between Jerry and each of his band mates during their jams. For example, a lot can be observed going on between Jerry and Bob without a single word being spoken or more than just a quick eye contact. Then a similar communication between Jerry and Phil without even an eye contact. Then between Jerry and Brent. Jerry was a such a strong pillar of the band. Greatest band on the face of this planet.
