@@andrewlipscomb3872 Those tins only hold about six ounces of water. I’d rather fold in a 36”/12” sheet of heavy foil. Those can be shaped into a metal pouch that can hold and boil a liter of water. A turkey roasting bag is also a great option. They fold flat, hold more than a gallon, and can be hung over heat source to cook with.

Right on point, bro. I would add a ferrocerium rod and mill a hard right angle edge on the spine of that Buck. My #1 go-to for fire is also a Fresnel, and the ferro is for cloudy days; those with some found natural tinder, or some WetFire cubes if it's too wet, never fail me. I only carry a BIC inside an Exotac sleeve, to prevent fuel loss, and obviously it won't fit in a tin. I generally use a Maxpedition EDC pouch and carry full size tools. It fits nicely in most of my cargo pockets and I think it serves better than a tin. That and a first aid/trauma kit in the other cargo pocket, I'm ready to hunt bear... Overall a great kit...keep up the good work!

Some others have already pointed out some great tips, but if I may add; prethread one of your needles with a decent length of thread, and add a few more fishing hooks, one with a pre tied leader (about 12-13 centimeters should be enough) because if you're cold/shivering/exhausted/hungry/dehydrated or the conditions are wet and windy, or showing symptoms of hypothermia or dehydration/malnutrition, it is almost impossible to thread the eye of a needle or fishing hook. Using mirror tape and a playing card you can make a decently thin and unbreakable signal mirror, and if possible you should try and fit a whistle in there as well. This was a really well thought out kit, and I really like how you were able to provide some cover even if it was only a trash bag. Thank you so much for sharing.

swap out the 550 cord for #36 bank line (5 meters) and that would save enough space to add at least .5 meters of aluminum (tin) foil. Also add a "birthday candle" and some potable aqua tabs to disinfect water. Great kit! Thanks for sharing.

Im not a big fan of boiling water in tiny tins because you start with a tiny amount, some of it boils off and it takes forever to purify a cup full. Two foot squared sheets of aluminum foil fold down incredibly small and can be used to make a very sturdy envelope type container to cook and boil water in. If they dont fit in your tin, stick them in your wallet maybe? But they take up less space than a credit card. A bigger trash bag could be tightly wrapped around the tin, this makes it more waterproof and you could bind it in an extra 6 ft or so of paracord or whatever.

Nicely done, one suggestion is that if you wear a paracord bracelet you would have more room in your tin. You could add some high test synthetic braided fishing line such as 65 Lb spectra power pro. Good for fishing, stitching, ect... another take is to view it as part of a modular EDC system. When camping I always have a small silva type 27 compass, wenger swiss army pocket knife with scissors and saw blade, larger single blade lock back knife, bandanna. You could then include items in the kit to augment or expand upon the items already in your pockets.

To keep the kit as original as possible: ..Ad 1 or 2 more hooks and tiny sinkers. Lose the fat wood, replace the paracord hundred pound line or 275 paracord, lose the fresnel lense, all to make room for a square foot of tin foil, heavy duty if it fits . Replace the strike anywhere matched with storn matches and a striker, thers a lot of different sizes so whatever the best kind that will fit . Switch the knife for a bigger inexpensive Buck if it fits if possible. Keep the ranger band if you want but under that waterproof the tin by wraping electrical or vunyl tape over the seem

Yours is a lot simpler than most peoples' but it's very compact and no-frills. Most people tend to put a bunch of one "C" in their tins, while you have all five, which is great! I recommend making a paracord bracelet to save more space where you can put more types of cordage or first aid. I loved your tin and am using it to model mine. :)

have you thought about adding water tablet. they take up no space and are great in a pinch, and you can add a fairly nice piece of aluminum foil folds up nicely and can be used to boil water I keep it folded into the lid of the tin. I have also glued a match striker in the lid or along the inside of the tin. the strike any where matches don't strike any where and doesn't work on wet surfaces. I saw if you lube up a cotton ball and put It in a sealed straw piece it will keep it more water proof and the plastic increases burn time. good tin though.

Hi mate, nice kit. Just a quick tip if I may, you can do a lot of with a razor blade. Firstly a lot of people carry them for cutting small game; like squirrels, rabbit or fish. Also you do not want to use the same blade that you use to prepare a game animal for other things in a survival situation, because if that blade (any type) comes into contact with the contents of the stomach or intestines of the animal, it will be infected with toxic acids, which you will not have the correct gear with you to sterilise it and which ever knife comes it contact, you would be recommended to ditch it, and since people would not be prepared to ditch bigger knives, the razor blade is quite a useful thing. Secondly, you can use it for medical tasks such as removing injured tissue from foot blisters or infected blisters. Again you would need to throw it away, as keeping it with you would not be a good thing. Best thing to do would be to bury them, somewhere far away from a water source or ideally put it in a tissue and then into a ziplock bag and then into a trash bin in order to comply with the Leave No Trace rule. For that, I would also recommend, first, putting it in the fire, if you have one, or just hold it over a bic lighter away from your face at arms length, the heat will denature any enzymes/acid. Then wrap and place in a zip lock bag. Third, you can actually break of a piece of twig, around 1cm in diameter and use the blade by cutting a notch to make a small knife handle, some twine or paracord can be used to lash it. Lots more uses, just comes with practice. I carry two sterile large scalpel blades in my Survival Kit, for the above and other purposes. Keep going, you are doing quite well. Good luck. Thank you for sharing. Warm regards. DisabledPrepper

It's really difficult to get everything in a survival kit when space is so limited. However you have no compass (do you know how to make one though?)whistle, signal device or trapping gear. Even sticking a cut piece of cd to your lighter (edges taped) or inside the top of the tin would be a good idea. I am sure you could find room. Also maybe wrapping some wire/fishing line around underneath your outer bands would be a useful addition without taking up much room? You could also tape some duct tape to the bottom of the tin and place the wire and bands over the top of it. Personally I would wear a paracord survival bracelet and swap out the paracord in your for other items like a whistle, water purification tablets and/or a crayon but that's just my personal preference. Oh also, i just don't get matches. I see them in lots of survival kits but I really think they are a useless addition. I am not a survival expert - I have no survival training but if you have your freshnel lens and a lighter then why carry matches? May be someone can tell me? They get used up too quickly and blow out too easily. I would rather add a small flint spark thing (don't know the name?! I welcome input on this since I have only just started showing an interest in survival kits in the last couple of days. I also think that your baggies and cotton could be compacted better. I think the straw cotton method is fantastic. Why does the dental floss need to stay dry? Every millimeter counts in that kind of kit. I'd rather have a small piece of paper in place of the dental floss baggie. However if you decide to keep the baggie then you could add some fishing weights in the middle of the dental floss since this is wasted space. I'm also not keen on the wood piece. I believe you would be better off with a pencil in place of that. I will say that I like the knife and bag very much. I wonder if its possible to get a multi use knife that is just as good and the same size? I don't actually know the answer to that. Just my input. I mean no offence and I welcome discussion since I have no experience in this other than watching a few youtube videos in the last two days.

Dreem Walker Whilst I agree with you, aren't survivalist supposed to practice these skills so that they actually CAN use the equipment if needed? Also, it really depends on the aim of the kit. If it's just 24-48hr back up survival gear then it's not really needed. If it's 'the end of the world' type of scenario then trapping gear would be essential. Some people feel safer carrying this in their EDC (as they always like to be prepared) and larger SHTF kits aren't as accessible. I suppose what I am trying to say is that kits need be tailored for the individual, the intention of use and (as you rightly mention) skill set.
@raisingconsciousness777
@raisingconsciousness777 8 жыл бұрын
I agree about kits being tailored. Most people making videos of their kits already seem to tailor their own. Regarding your comment about swapping out the paracord for a whistle and just relying on the paracord bracelet, my thinking is that people don't want to break their bracelet! lol They'll never use that cord but they'll easily use loose paracord from their kit. I think those bracelets are more for novelty and cool factor, unless of course it's armageddon and their life is actually depending on it.

I would still keep a razor, and upgrade your knife to a higher carbon content blade. Stainless is generally lower in carbon content, and loses its edge fast. I my self have that same knife and even without use it dulls in a month. Now the razor can be taped to the lid, and that can be a redundant cutting tool or a food prep clean blade. I would also look into a striker or small ferro rod in conjunction to your lighter and magnifier.
