It's taken me a while to get around to reviewing an Altra shoe, but I'm very glad I finally did. In many ways, it was not what I was expecting at all, and I was continually surprised at just how good of a daily trainer this shoe was. First, I will point out that it's not a minimalist shoe. There's 24mm of stack height throughout the shoe. And it's a very good midsole material.
The main thing I was concerned about was the transition to zero drop. But, in my personal experience, I didn't have any issue with it at all. My body really notices the difference in the first half mile or so of the run, but after that, while it does feel different than a 10mm drop shoe, it's not an issue.
Disclosures: this is a pair of shoes I purchased with my own money. No one has paid me to make this video or reimburse me. No one will have a chance to preview my footage or thoughts before this video goes up on youtube.

What I love about this review is there is no comparison to the 1 or 1.5! I have heard so many negative things about these shoes and it's good to hear some positive things from an experienced runner who has not previously ran in Altras! I may pick up a pair!

Great review as usual Kofuzi! I am going all in for Altra now after having tried them years ago and not really working out for me at that time. I bought the Superior 4.5 which turns out to have less stack then what I need but have been using them for casual use to get used to zero drop. I subsequently bought the Timp 2 (which I think you would love) and so far that is working very well! Plan to get the Torin 4 based on that experience and looking to get the Escalante 2 (on sale) for casual use as well. I am getting to the point where I don’t want to wear anything but zero drop! I am becoming a believer very quickly.

Thanks for the review. One of my favorites to run in and I feel like I can go fast in these, use them for track workouts. Agree with your comment about hills, really feel the calf/achilles stretch going up and a bit unsettling coming down. Still want to try the Racer version.

I do also like Altras much. started with Escalante, Lone Peak and now Torin and Superior. My only issue is that the midsole is wearing out fast and I don't get more than 500km/300mi out of the shoes. I am 75kg and mid-foot/fore-foot runner.

So pumped to see this review - totally would love to see you test some more Altra shoes out - Although I think they really shine on the trails. I have heard good things about the Provision but I know that you do have some issues with even mild stability shoes so perhaps not. If you were testing some out I would check out the newer Torins when they are released (any day now) I have had a few issues with the Torin 4 (both versions) different ones with each. The other one that would be interesting to have your take on is the Escalante Racer - less soft and more responsive. If you were going to try a trail shoe I believe you would enjoy the Timp 2

@@LifeInTheLongRun There is a spot on the regular torin 4 on the medial side, kind of close to the heel where it feels like a seam , makes the midsole harder - it just hits me in the wrong spot causing a bit of annoyance and if I wear them too long, pain. In the plush I experienced some hot spots closer to the ball of my foot. was quite disappointed because I was very interested in these.

Altra Escalante 2.0 was my first Altra 0d shoe as well. I've been enjoying it for the easy/steady paces as well. I find it gives a good work out on the legs/calves, and probably helps strengthen the legs/joints. I plan to mix it into the rotation going forward.

I have Escalante2.5 for work as fedex driver. It’s like a sock, similar to free runs but way more supportive and comfy. I haven’t thought about wearing them for running yet for fear that it might not be thick enough in cushion for me. I’m over 200 pounds. These are my favorite walking shoes for sure. I really like that soles seem to be super strong and durable. I might convert to everything Altra once my NB 1080v11 are finished!

Altra it's just on another level. I've tried the Lone Peak 4 and 5 and now the Escalante 2.5. I was using my old LP 4 also on the road, and while they're perfect for trail running/walking, I've found that they kinda slow you down when used for road running (too much cushoning for that). The escalnte on the other hand are just perfect and fast. I was able to run 2.5 minutes faster than I usually did with the LP.

Great Review, plan on buying that shoe. I have an Altra Paradigm pair, and they are very confortable. The Foot shape helps guys like me that have a wider toe box, not necesarily wide feet. It makes Altras (I only have tried the Paradigm as of yet) very confortable. I have a pair of nike pegasus, but those I had to stop using, since they cramp my toes, as for me its a very narrow shoe on the toe box.

I absolutely am in LOVE with the Escalante Racer! I ran 6 miles for my first run in them and didn't even realize I did that much. Also, I somehow got a PB for fastest mile (according to my Garmin)!! I was meaning to take it slow, as it is my first zero drop shoe as well but no pain and no after pain. This is why I contemplate purchasing this shoe. I'm hoping to change out every other run. Kofuzi, the wear in the front is probably a good sign that you are using that horse-pawing motion in your mid/forefoot gait, and maybe the dirt+stones and the uphills (neither of which you encounter in Chicago) are making that visible wear difference on the sole. BTW, my coach’s wife is a shoe expert and she told me wear on the rear lateral corners is almost universal. Even if a runner lands first on their mid or forefoot, the vast majority of runners touch down at least a little on that back outer corner. And of course whatever walking we do in our running shoes has us striking there as well.

Helpful review, thank you. I started using the Altra Escalantes right before they stopped making them and moved to the 1.5s. I am not a big fan of the 1.5 since I find the sole stiffer and not "bouncy." It doesn't sound like the bounce is back from the original, but the flexibility and room of the upper might be (?). I have also heard that the 2.0's are a little narrow in the middle. How did you feel in these through the midfoot area?

If your interested in something that’s a little more capable of faster paced but still built for daily training I’d point you towards the Torin 4.0, key difference between them and escalates are ‘Quantic’ foam rather than Ego foam and a more traditional mesh upper with welded overlays that provides incredible lockdown 👍🏼

What is the weight (and size) on yours?

You are a walking....errr... I mean running testament that anyone with good running mechanics can run in *any* drop running shoe. Your footstrike (and overall form and gait) have always been on point (mid-foot to forefoot), so I'm not surprised that you had zero issues with zero drop.

Herbinator_88 totally agree with you about his foot strike and why any drop works for him. Kofuzi I’ve watched form videos and for downhills you don’t really want to brake and heel strike, rather just shorten your stride! Maybe that’s why your feet hurt on the downhill Tunnel Marathon 🤷‍♀️ I sound like a know-it-all thru text 🙈

Thanks for doing this review. I've owned several pairs of escalante's, v 1, 1.5, and 2. Although the 2's are comfy as a walking shoe, I enjoy the 1 and 1.5 more for running. Unfortunately, they don't produce the 1 and 1.5's anymore, I believe. Going from the 1.5 to the 2, there was just too much weight added for my taste. I realize I'm probably in the minority on this view though. But, overall, a great shoe. I think I'm a zero-drop lifer now because of it. At least as a good healthy change-up in the running rotation. Thanks again for the review.

I agree with you. The 1 and 1.5 were a lot nicer to run in.

@@kaismithley7384 that's very interesting and good to know. I came to the party late with respect to Cliftons. My first Clifton's were the model 6. Thanks for the historical perspective.

Your not in the minority. Matterfact, your in majority. Go look at consumers views of the 2.0 on Running Warehouse. Lots of negatives compared to the 1 and 1.5. Altra has heard the complaints I hope. Judging from the previews for the 2.5, ( I got my fingers crossed) expect that show to return to its former glory. As far as running down hill and I can only speak for the 1 and 1.5 that's when the shoe really shines. As far as Kofuzi saying the 2.0 having a sock like fit, that's a head scratcher because the main complaints from fans of the older iterations was the soft sock like fit was gone and also the added weight.

I didn't like them, I used and loved the Escalantes 1 and 1.5 but noticed the 2.0 are more narrow and have noticed the same with the Lone Peaks 4.0 😭 so I'm wearing the Torins now , they don't have the pop like the 1.0 and 1.5 Escalantes, 🤞 my fingers they bring they wideness back, I guess I'm going to start doing all my 100 milers in Torins 🥴!

Yo Mike, what max distances did you take these to? Half marathon? 20 milers? I’m interested to try and wondering if they’d be a good long run shoe. Thanks again.

it's gotta be pretty packed and dry, but yeah. if you need something more robust, check out the lone peak. a very similar shoe, geared for trail, and can also handle a bit of pavement, if necessary.

I have the escalante 1.0 and they are way too hot to run in most of the year. There is no breath-ability at all especially in the toe box. I can' t run with them.

No speed in a zero drop shoe compared to a shoe with a drop height. Also, you are slightly overpronating in this shoe. Given you are a neutral runner, I think they aren't stable in the slightest. I also doubt that outsole will have any traction after a few hundred miles.

people usually tell me that I'm over pronating like crazy, so the slight overpronation you note is perhaps an improvement?

Was very sceptical about the altra but, since recently a triathlon athlet told me to take a look on them and seeing now your video I will definitely give them a try. Actually I search some daily's for 8-15k routes, do you think they are suited for such distances? In my Peg 36 I feel uncomfortable over 8k
