LP6 vs Terraventure 3: • Altra Lone Peak 6 -vs-...
After hiking with many pairs of Altra Lone Peaks for many years, the changes in the latest version have made the shoe more narrow and not as comfortable. In this video, I'll show you how it's changed, what to do if you want to continue wearing the Lone Peaks, and what hiking shoes I'm wearing now and will try in the future.

When it comes to hiking shoes, the Altra Lone Peak 7 has gained a reputation as one of the best options on the market. However, my recent experience with this shoe left me disappointed. While the shoe was comfortable and provided excellent traction, it lacked the durability that is essential for a hiking shoe. After just a few uses, the sole started to wear out, and the upper began to tear. Additionally, the shoe's design caused me to experience discomfort in my toes, which made it challenging to complete longer hikes. As a hiker who relies heavily on their equipment, I cannot recommend the Altra Lone Peak 7 to others who are looking for a long-lasting hiking shoe.
If you're in the market for a reliable hiking shoe, I would advise against purchasing the Altra Lone Peak 7. While this shoe has received positive reviews in the past, my recent experience has shown that it falls short when it comes to durability and comfort. When hiking, your shoes are your most essential piece of equipment, and it's crucial to invest in a pair that can withstand the demands of the trail. Unfortunately, the Altra Lone Peak 7 failed to meet this requirement. I was disappointed to experience wear and tear after only a few uses, and the discomfort I felt in my toes made it difficult to enjoy my hikes fully. In conclusion, I would recommend looking for alternative options that prioritize both durability and comfort.

Sorry to hear. I've been hiking in Altra Lone Peaks for 8 years and love them. Will give the seven's a try before I give up on them. Can't imagine using anything else.

Topo pursuits are very similar feeling to the altras. They have a bit more arch support. Toe space is amazing and they are zero drop. The foam sole is around the thickness of the timps.

The 7 is trash. The tread.is nice but everything else about it sucks. They fell apart within my first 3 runs. My 6s have been used In multiple ultras countless trail runs to the point the tread is non existent. Now they are my work shoe because they are still comfy as shit. They need to give us the 6 with the 7 tread

I've been using the Ultraventure Pros for just over 2 years. I'm just about to buy my third pair. Very good shoes. I've used them on the LCT and clambering over the rocks along the impassible zones was very confidence inspiring.

Good to know, really liked my Lone Peaks but switched over to the Topos you mentioned...mainly because they have better traction but i also found them to have more cushion. The Topos drain well i used them for Harding Falls this morning, once they drained it was time to get wet again lol. Lots and lots and lots of water crossings atm with the all the rains we had.

If you're going the way of max cushion with the Speedgoats, you could also consider the New Balance Trail More v3 and the Topo Ultraventure 3. Both also offer Vibram outsoles and are available in wide, which I recently purchased to accommodate my neanderthal feet. For reference, the Lone Peak 6 in wide was still too narrow for me in the midfoot, as well as all other current Altra trail runners. Me, fit into HOKAs...fuggetaboutit. I rotate the Pursuit (0mm drop), Trail More v3 (4mm drop), and Ultraventure 3 (5mm drop) depending on the type of hike or trail run. The Ultraventure 3 feels similar to the Pursuit in the arch though, so you may feel that little "bump" if you have low-ish arches.

I'm curious to see more reviews of the Keen WK400. My interest is walking, not trail running which seems to get most of the attention from reviewers over plain walking. Nicely done video, seems very professionally done.

I concur with your assessment of the 6 vs 7. I’ve hiked over 100 miles in my 6s and tried 7s because they’re on sale. I couldn’t wear them and returned immediately. I need the wide toe box and was disappointed with the changes made to the 7. I just bought a pair of 8s and hope they will fit like the 6s. Thanks for your review.

I don’t read much into reviews but I JUST got some sevens a few months back and I too noticed a big difference. I actually prefer the tighter feel at the heel but my feet don’t feel as “fresh” after 5-10 miles as they did with the 4 or 5s (skipped the 6). Got mine at rei so I’ve been contemplating a return.

Agree. Altra made their name with wide well drained and ventilated shoes. Every second version they make big changes. Usually to narrower and less ventilated. Everyone complains so they then change them back. They've been doing this since the 3.5's, when I first tried them. I also tried some waterproof 4.0's that had loose heels. The 3.5's were much better. The fours had those same awkward lacing eyelets that have reappeared in the 7's, but not that bizarre red foot arch compressor band thank goodness. The 4.5's were great, but wore out fast. With the 5's they replaced most of the ventilation with lots of painted on dots to fool you into buying them and introduced a new narrower size, that they called regular then relabelled the regulars as wide. And stopped having point 5 versions. I found some more 4.5's to buy. The 6's were wide and well ventilated and now the 7's are actually longer than the 6's . My 7's are the same length as my new 12.5 6's. But the 7's are narrower. They keep doing the opposite of what their customer want. They did the same thing with the Timps. 1.5's good, 2's narrower tighter. Similar pattern with the Olympus. Latest Olympus has this goofy giant pull tab that puts a crease down the middle of the heel and makes it feel loose. When it's not rubbing on your Achilles. I get the impression that there is some sort of internal dispute going on at Altra. Skinny feet vs wide feet. I've ordered up some topo pursuits.

The altra lone peaks used to be the best! I echo your thoughts there for sure. Also my lone peak mid hikers started having an odd smell when getting them wet. So bad that I replaced them twice thinking that an animal got to mine and did their biz while my shoes were drying out on my porch or something. I’ve written altra and left reviews, a few reviewers are talking about it, so it’s legit. But so sad to have to leave an entire brand behind because of changes in design and their unwillingness to listen to their supporters.

I've run 231 miles in my Lone Peak 7's so far and must confess that they're my current personal favourite shoe. They have a stack height of a lowish 25 mm yet in my opinion give a Goldilocks level of *just right* cushioning whether I'm using them for roads or trail runs. I haven't had the pleasure of sampling earlier iterations of the Lone Peak model so can't make comparisons. A justifiable criticism of the shoe is that the uppers lack durability. My pair have developed holes in the thin materialed uppers where they meet the rubberized looking toe box reinforcement material. I'm not sure if interaction with sharp twigs on trails have caused this damage or the uppers have spontaneously broken down, but I would identify this upper material fragility as a weakness of the shoe. However, the holes haven't affected the comfort or usability of my pair so far and I'm probably going to continue using them until they are no longer viable and need consigning to a non-recyclable deposition facility where all or most athletic shoes end up, sadly. 😢

I needed a wide shoe with more padding as I was doing some more rocky hiking and was very pleasantly surprised by the Altra Olympus 5s. It and the lone peaks are the only ones with original wide footbox. Also I think the new colors of the LP7 look worse than last models. Will have to get a few extra 6s as I wear those as an everyday shoe
@scottparker6552

Everyone keeps saying the LP7 is more narrow... I think they mean the toe box came in slightly. The midfoot is either slightly wider on LP7 or the fabric on top is more forgiving which does not squeeze my midfoot as much. I tested a few different LP6 and LP7 to confirm this and the LP7 is definitely the winner for midfoot width comfort. Overall feels like a much better shoe. Glad I didn't listen to the masses.

I tried the HOKA Speedgoat several times but it was just a little too narrow and the Stinson was just too big a platform for me. Ended up 6 months ago with the ASICS Trabuco Max Trail Running Shoe. Very comfortable and has nearly as much cushion as a HOKA. It is great for travel shoe and lighter hikes but I still wear my Saloman XA Pro trail runners for most hikes. They are heavier but much more supportive, stable and durable.

I hike where it is full of a lot of small rocks and pebbles. Unfortunately, while the shoes are comfy, no moreso than others TBH, they pick up a lot of stones which end up in the shoe. So they are relegated to less gravelly (if that's a word), more dirt oriented hikes. I will say my fav is the brown on brown Merrells. They just work everywhere and are more comfy than all the others. Note, I'm talking hiking here.

It is narrower. When I got my 7s I dropped down from 11 to 10.5 wide and they are great. The only thing I don't like about them is the ledge on the heel, which I think I will cut off mainly because it makes my heel hurt when I'm driving. The heel pocket is definitely stiffer and more snug, and that might also be putting pressure on my heel bursa. I still like them but only for hiking. I don't like running in them because the stack height is too high and they are too squishy for my running preference. I used to run in Hoka Stinsons but the stack height and ramp angle are not good for my knees. I'm still looking for the perfect running shoe.

I’ve seen lots of thru-hikers abandoning the Lone Peaks. I’m on my fourth pair of Columbia Vitesse- not because they wear out but because they keep making them in great colors. They have a wide toe box that doesn’t cause ingrown toenails. The sole is wide enough to keep me from rolling an ankle.

The thing that gets me about Altra is them moving away from the “original” foot shape across a lot of their shoes. That was once their brand. It’s a great fit. It was the “Altra” thing but now they’re moving much more mainstream with their standard and narrow foot shapes.

Altra seem to be turning their backs on the BareFoot Ethos. They add more and more padding in a lot of their models, this means less ground feel (I had a pair of the Olympus boots, ridiculously thick, returned for a refund) - the whole point of 'going barefoot' for me: re-learning how to walk and strengthen your feet, etc. Also, many Altra models are narrower and narrower. Finally, I laugh when hikers say they are happy to get 300 miles out of their Lone-Peaks before they have to buy new ones... crazy! I've moved over to VivoBarefoot shoes and boots. Much better ground feel, look like they will last a long time, and can be repaired. Walked in Scotland recently in Winter in their Forest ESC .. fantastic: comfortable, warm, breathable, etc!

Not for technical climbing, I still have a few crampon able hard soled boots for that. The Forest ESC are brilliant for rough walking in mountains here in the UK, up to simple scrambling. Which is the large majority of what me and my wife do these days. The Forest ESC are all leather and with a bit of the leather wax they actually look like new after being beaten up a lot!

I skipped buying the Lone Peak 7. I'm still using my 6's and still have my 5's. I just received my Lone Peak 8, haven't used them yet. I hike over 20 hours every week. I like toe room because arthritis is causing my second toe to creep over the big toe. And I like the low to the ground design to help with balance. Too much cushioning is a negative for me. I also got the Speedcross 6's for half price so I'll throw out the LP 5's and stick with LP6 and the Solomon's. Best wishes to you.

When I find a shoe that I love, I buy at least 2 pair, sometimes 3, just to be sure I have them in case the manufacturer changes things with new versions. That strategy has worked well for me, it’s just big $$ upfront, these shoes cost a whole lot more than shoes from Target, LOL, but in the long run it’s a good investment.

Have you tried any Lems? Similar in that they have a low or zero drop and wide toe box. Plus they’re a small business, which I tend to gravitate towards.

Man, I just looked at these online today. I was looking for a size 16 trailrunner and these were the only ones I could find with good reviews… disappointing to hear they are getting some bad reviews for quality. Now I don’t know what I will do…

Tried the LP7 👎 after 3 miles I was like nope these suck. LP6 was pretty good, ordered another pair. Mind blowing how a company can destroy themselves from doing stupid stuff. Advice to Altra …stick to LP6 design….stitch, stronger glue, and use new LP7 tread. 🙌🍻👍

I'm really liking the Pursuit shoe, it's between a Terraventure and LP. And I'm guessing a new Terraventure will probably come out soon. Usually when they get discounted it's a clue for a new model.

I had some og altras that I loved. The one2.5. I’ve gone through 5 pairs, as once altra stopped making them I found some on eBay. They’re all gone now, and I cannot find a single altra style that fits my foot. The original shoe shape is too wide for my heal now (not an issue with my old ones that were the original shape). The new narrower styles are so tight across the top and way too narrow. There’s no give or flex to the material. It’s disappointing, I’d have worn those old altras for life and just kept buying them.

Based on your recommendation I tried the Topo Athletic Terraventure 3 but sadly after intermittently wearing them a dozen times on day hike test hikes with a full backpack, I've been struggling with them. First off, the insoles were, well - next to nothing so I immediately replaced them with a pricey pair of Superfeet insoles which made walking more comfortable. But regarding shoe box I mean sure, giving a bit of extra room is cool... but not so much that it makes me start thinking about moving some of my backpack gear into the toe box! Worse, now I either have to aggressively bind the laces very tight (which causes several days of discomfort on the top of my foot), or let my toes slide around and start to get a blister after 10-15 miles of a moderate hike. So I'll wear them around the home or a day hike without a pack but stick to my HOKA Speedgoat 5's that have spoiled me. However I'll give one nod to the Topo's for their $97 shoe, as compared to the Hoka's at a pricey $155. But IMO when you're backpacking you can't afford to sellout to pain and discomfort. I wonder if I didn't "oversize" the Topo's from size 11 to 12 as I do with other hiking shoes would help - perhaps but I still suspect the seeming EE width would still be a problem unless I put some material in the toe box of the shoe. Any ideas?

@Hikingguy Жыл бұрын
I think if you are doing well in a Hoka Speedgoat 5, with it's narrow toebox, the wider toebox on a Terraventure or LP will feel wide. For me and my foot, the Terraventure felt a lot like the LPs and if you hold the shoes top-down, side-by-side, they have a similar shape with a wide toe box. But feet are variable and not everyone fits shoes the same. If the Speedgoat 5's are working well for you, I'd just call it a day and stay there. They work well for me but the narrow toe box causes hot spots if I hike over 10-miles or so.

Idk I hear the same thing year after year about the new LP. “Everyone buy the old version” then when the next one comes out everyone says the same thing. However I do agree that since I’ve been wearing them, version 2, that there have been changes. My BIGGEST gripe with altras all around is their grip. I love the superiors as well but I at least slip once every backpacking trip in either the LP or the Superiors (esp these). So I’m intrigued by the new grip. Also on speedgoats, they were too narrow in the toe but the fabric stretched enough. But man did that fabric stretch! Too much! (See reviews). But too much cushion for my knees! Anyways glad you tried them, I’m going to eventually! Still on my 6’s!

Classic corporate BS: trying to make us believe the loss of stitching via the fusing on the uppers....its a CHEAPER process, and LOOKS it!!....and changing up the lacing pattern that worked on every shoe in history not only looks weird but the lacing support is uneven....i could go on.....BYE, Altra!

Hoka Speedgoat is an odd choice for hiking, tall and rockered, toe squeezer. From Hoka I'd and did pick a Mafate Speed⁴. More flat feel, more toe room, more grip. Feels like a tighter Olymphus. My other pics for hiking + running: Saucony Peregrine¹³ (low to the ground) Nike Pegasus Trail⁴ (positively surprised - nice cushioning but very lightweight! wide toebox)

I am always surprised when people seem to tolerate the "toe squeeze" on the Speedgoat, in comparison with these others. I sure can't.
