Hi Seth! Yesterday Brazilian marathoner Daniel do Nascimento ran the Seoul Marathon in 2:04:51, establishing a new South American record and a new record of the Americas (outperforming Ryan Hall’s 02:04:58 in Boston), which also makes him the fastest man in the marathon born outside of Africa. Brazil has a long tradition in long distance running, but we hadn’t had such an impressive time since Ronaldo da Costa won the Berlin Marathon in 1998 with 02:06:05 and broke the World Record. Daniel was only a few months old when that happened! Today we Brazilians all across the globe will be running together with little Daniel, as we call him. Cheers from South America!

Finally! An Altra in the 8s! It's funny that it is the rivera since it's the one most disliked by diehard altra fans who love to embrace the space. You would hear people say that Altra is going mainstream but the Rivera was a necessary step! I had 2 pairs of v1 and am very surprised of the score it was given. Might have to try v2 now!

I have a toe spread of nearly 5.5" so i really appriciate the options Altra gives. Too narrow of a toe box for me is a nightmare after just a mile or so, even Altras "narrow" last types are still foot shaped which is a nice feature all manufactures would offer.

Runners who *need* Altra’s traditional last might call these too narrow, but Rivera 2 is still wider than other brands. Another shoe that I have that fit most similarly to Rivera 2 was the 1st gen Evoride. I felt that the midsole is pretty soft - similar to Torin but less of it. Because of the narrower fit and slightly lower stack height, I think the simplest pitch for Rivera 2 is a more “dialed-in” and responsive daily trainer compared to Torin. I still turn to Endo Speed for racing, but wear Altra’s during training to focus on form.

Nice review, but I do have one gripe. You are basically saying that comfort = stack height. In other words, a shoe derives its comfort from a deep and soft midsole. I really do disagree there. Some of my most comfortable shoes have been rather minimalist shoes with relatively little underfoot.

QD I'm an IT person, I would say one thing that's becoming gradually obsolete is a lot of on-site servers. Pretty much most of that stuff can be done either in the cloud or a virtual server array on site. The only things that would really need a true dedicated on-site server would be something that needs zero latency, or is an heavy utilization server, or regulatory requirements.

Altra is offering both widths (technicaly three) because serious runners need a narrower shoe for faster paces, and core fans mostly walk/hike. This solves an argument between people that are unknowingly using the shoes for very different purposes.

"The upper. You nailed it. It's perfect. It's amazing. The best of 2022." I'll give it a 9 out 10. Huh! Then why not a 10/10! If 10 is the highest score and you never give anything a 10 then 9 should be the highest. But to me perfect means 10. You know like Bo Derek. Its subjective so don't worry about being too biased. No gusseted tongue. So! Instead it has a loop in the tongue where you tread the laces thru to keep the tongue in place. Gusseted tongues are not always gold. Yes maybe for trail shoes since they keep the debris out. But they make the shoe heavier. Warmer as far as breathability. And their harder to get on and off. Also some feel to tight and even adjusting the laces doesn't help. What I'm saying are gusseted tongues are not always a panacea.

I like my gen 1 Riveras. They are nice. For those switching over from other brands like brooks don’t assume that just cause these are on the slim frame that they’ll feel tight. They’re slim for an Altra but wider than something like a Hoka. My gripe with the Riveras is a lack of support. They are slipper like but if I lace them up tight they are fine. I’m hoping the Rivera 2s have a little more heel support. I’ve worn the Torins too which I like and the escalante racers. The racers are nice but a bit too wide in the toes (though perfect in the heel and mid). I’ll looking to try the Rivera 2s soon.

Seth love your videos, they have been SUPER helpful! I'm a heavier athlete who loves running (when I'm in running shape). I just got rid of my Riveras. I ran about 150 miles in them. Developed a hole on the inside of the sole to upper area and the tread were falling off. As a mid striker the feel was great but you are 100% correct about ankle foot strength. I’ve run in the Hoka Challenger and Torrent, and the Altra Lone Peak and Timp. The challenger is a “trail to road, vice-versa”. The torrent is a bit more trail oriented but fairly inexpensive and a great overall shoe. The lone peak is more similar to the Torrent with a little less lug depth, meaning you won’t feel them as much on the road and also an excellent multi-use outdoor shoe in general. The Timp is probably my least recommended, but a great trail oriented shoe. The Nike Wildhorse is a comfortable shoe with shorter lugs and was fairly quick and responsive. And I’ve tried (but not trained in) the Inov8 Parkclaw which were springy and had a nice breathable upper. Hope this helps!

I am currently using a Suunto 9 and have also used Garmin for many years too & in my experience the HR strap, though not perfect, is immeasurably better that the wrist monitoring. I believe this is because the wrist contains so many bones, tendons & ligaments the laser that picks up your HR can be deflected or absorbed. It is also why results with wrist HR monitoring can vary so much as our individual wrist structure is unique to us.

I'm not qualified nor experienced enough to doubt the claims about the (dis)advantages of a zero drop shoe versus a shoe with 10 mm of heel drop...but it seems hard to believe our body mechanics wouldn't be able to handle a 2 mm difference. The brand is just trying to gain more popularity than just the wide foot fam. Its a smart move imo.

Don't worry, Seth was just kind of making things up and got that bit wrong. There's no "New management realizing their toe boxes are too wide". Altra's not suddenly going to drop their biggest selling point that makes them unique. Seth just happened to pick one of the models Altra offers in "Slim", so they happened to fit his narrow feet better. Altra uses three different widths: Original, Standard, and Slim. They still offer the same as they always did, you just have to look at which last they used for which model.

I have the Rivera. They are NARROW. The midsole is very soft but not bouncy. I bottom out running down hill and my heels actually hit the road.. Painful. Never had it in any other shoe. You can think that it might be my weight but I am lightly built (68kg) man ! Donated them to charity.

Has anyone ever run sub 2:20 in altra in the marathon? I’m just not buying the zero drop as a way to be a competitive shoe in todays marathon world

@@crummockiphail9720 That dude is awesome. According to Seth 5'5" is too short to run the marathon. Frank is 5'3" and ran a 2:11 earlier this year.

Probably Altra’s parent company VF Corp figured they gotta start making fast Marathon racers and appeal to more than runners with ginormous feet. The reviews came in mostly positive for their Vanish C

It’s about sponsorships at the pro level. Shoes are gonna be near negligible difference at sub elite and below.

QD: Network TV coverage of running and track & field events. What KZfaqrs are doing to bring ‘a la carte events live and replay is disrupting the traditional model. Now, if we can get the Olympics delivered in this way that would be true disruption!

QOD: I think old school running is becoming more and more obsolete in terms of the days of running purely by feel, no watches, no headphones and no tech. Just you, the road/trail and fresh air. Another answer to this is paper money. We are slowly entering the age of plastic and I know for myself, I rarely ever have cash these days unless it’s absolutely necessary.

This shoes midsole is like a modern brick. Don't buy it, it literally feels like a dead midsole.
