I have three pairs of 4.5s in sizes for hiking and for trail running. I’ve been stocking up because I couldn’t find reviews on the 5, so it’s refreshing to hear that this model is good, too. It remains the most comfortable shoe I’ve ever worn. There is absolutely no traction on smooth, wet surfaces, and that is my only gripe.

I loved these. I traded them in for LP6 but I should have kept these. Really comfy upper. Good for road, dirt, compact sand. Not good for rocks or wet surfaces other than mild mud.

Merrel Trail glove 3-4 were my go to 0 drop, but I heard recently they’ve dropped the ball on the six. So I’m excited to try these.

I can confirm, I had to go a half size up myself with these, but man are they great!

Great review. Seems like the Escalante for the trails. I once bought a Superior many versions ago. It is definitely for the lighter runners with lots of speed. I need minimum of Timp but prefer the Olympus.

Ive been looking at the Olympus for 20+ milers on groomed/limestone easy runs. I’ve only run in the Torin road shoes… this video gives a good overview of the type of Altra trail shoe for the right use case.

I have the Superior 4.5 and it is my favourite trail shoe. They are so good that one can easily get carried away and run way too long distances in them and in some cases pay the price later :) Personally I have to alternate Superiors with some positive drop shoes to compensate low flexibility in calfs and achiles tendons. Thanks for the review and I'm definitely looking forward to upgrading my Superiors to the new model.

Love my Altra Superior 5s! Buttery smooth running, quickly forget they're even there. Leads to a very engaging trail running experience. They're light but are they fast? Zero drop didn't seem to lead to the same propulsion as higher drops like Nike Pegasus Trail

I currently use the Lone Peak 5 but I’m looking at getting a second pair of Altras! I use my Lone Peak 5 for OCR but I’m looking for a less aggressive tread for my normal trail running. Thanks for the review!

Just picked up the altra Olympus 4s, it definitely looking to try the altra superior 5s for those faster and lighter runs. In NJ, it seems like trails are either really rocky/rooty, or smooth dirt lol. So I definitely want to try out a lighter altra shoe. I also go half a size up in altras! Great overview!

Thank you for another great review!! The sup' are definitely such a great shoe, although unfortunately they don't really "fit" my body as I am a tall and heavy runner (1,90m/89kgs). Sometimes I struggle on certain trails. I should give the Lone Peak a try I guess ! But defo great gear here ! (I'm so fond of your trucker hat btw :) )

Nice review. I hope the durability has improved over the 4.5. after 400km they are destroyed.

I'm about to go try on my first altras next week. I've really want to like the timp, but VERY concerned about durability. I like these superiors, but need something that can cover a couple miles of pavement as well as our NY rocky, rooty trails. I'll try some on.

I’ve had two pair of superior 4.0 and purchased the 5.0 in the same size. I normally where a 9.5 and have always gotten a 10 but with the Superior 5.0 I have to go up to a 10.5. Was a little disappointed to return the pair because they no longer had the size and color choice I wanted.

Excellent review!! Very well covered. I wish I could wear Altra's as they look great and are well designed and constructed. I have narrow heals with low volume, slightly narrow metatarsals for both of my feet (mens, U.S. 10.5). So, my feet 'swim' in them. Ugh!! Thanks for the review!

Great review. Loving my 4.5 and finding the cushion a perfect balance as been using my King mt 2s loads too. My Olympus just feel ridiculous now!! The superior really do feel super light , very comfy and brilliant ground feel. Have you ever gone more minimal?

I think the absence of a front ring to attach the gaiter sucks. And I'd rather have vibram megagrip than maxtrac. At that price point Altra can do both.

Your comment re wide mid foot resonated with me. Have you ever tried on the Speedgoat 4 WIDE version? I did a test run in the normal fit and got blisters but not sure if it was due to my wide feet or low arch (the inside of the shoe rises to support your arch it feels like)

all my shoes are size 11, had to go 11.5 with Altra

I haven´t tried Altra yet but there are few models that look quite interesting. Seems the Superior could be kind of compared to the Torrent 2? I have eyed the Timp or the Lone Peak which they look very well built.

Im size 7 but i have a altra superior 5 from my brother that is size 8.5. He said shoes for running tends to be abit larger. Can i still wear the 8.5 shoes even if im size 7?

They’re not bad but they’re no TIMP 1.5. If they were to re release those I’d buy them Yeah the ripped down the side in the end but the did a good 300 miles I reckon.

Is it normal that this shoes has wide toe box? I mean my feet is vey narrow. The length is okay i have half inch allowamce but the toe bix is wide for my feet. Hehe

Do these run small? I ordered my regular size and they are more snug than I hoped.

BTW, I think you should give the adidas TERREX Speed Ultra's a try, though they may not accommodate your "clown feet" as well.

I’m super curious how these would do on gravel, both fine and course. I’m a competitive shooter, and that’s about 90% of what we’re on for 6 hours out of the day. What would you say on this shoe for Gravel??

Hi, I tried on a 9.5 (44.5) pair of the altra lone peak 5's today, They were maybe slightly too cushioned for what I was after. There is nowhere nearby for me to try on the superiors, and I may try to pick up a second hand pair - Is the general opinion I would be after a 10, despite the lone peak 5's being plenty roomy in the 9.5? I disagree, and I'm a bit shocked to hear you say these are good in wet conditions? They are light and for me have a good fit.. But they are dangerous on wet surfaces! Like wet rocks. Actually they are so bad that I had to walk barefoot home from a hike one of the first times I used them. They collect dust now.. if they change the outer sole I will buy them again.
