Alumina transshipment with a clamshell grab

The dry bulk material alumina, for the production of aluminium, might be one of the toughest materials to handle. That is because it’s more liquid than water.
That means that it’s very important that a dry bulk grab has a 100% closing mechanism such as this clamshell grab. To guarantee this the bucket has a special closing mechanism with rubber.
That is not the only thing that is special about this clamshell grab. As it has a centralised greasing/lubrication system. Making it easy to grease the whole clamshell grab from a single system. What makes maintenance easier and faster.

Port of Blyth (UK) had one of these but it was banned because the white powder would cover the whole of the nearby town. It was damaging paintwork on vehicles and causing big health problems for those with weaker lungs. The result was a spiral vacuum device - looks like a massive Dyson vacuum cleaner is now in place.

Which wind speed results in dust emissions even with the best grab system, I stand to be corrected but the way I see it during high winds dust will still be generated when handling fine cargo like alumina

If you’ll notice, the cargo is being transloaded from one ship to another. Thus, it’s a variable system that must be extremely adaptable. Conveyors are not that flexible.

the barge is loading from a sea going vessel,the barge will probably head up the rhine river or some inland waterway the ship cannot reach

That is right, for further inland transport or export to Germany or Belgium.

This might be a stupid question to ask but why are they using such cranes in harbours so often instead of conveyor systems. I'd say conveyors would be much faster but there must be a catch. Any thoughts on that?

i agree, but this is probably used in a poor country where labour is cheap. the ship also probably has cheap labourers on board

KnorpelDelux try unloading a ship with a conveyor ;) also the more important reason. loading a ship evenly is very important and done best with a crane.

Harbors have been using the clam shell since they had cranes.

almost every country use those cranes. Gottwald's or liebherrs has the most variable loading systems you can get. Will you put an conveyor belt in the ship for unloading ? Clams are Standard items within a harbour and has nothing to do with poor country or rich country.

how long does it take to unload a ship? I unload alumina here on the west coast and it takes us between 7-10 days depending on breakdowns and or weather. cool video

Hello from Newcastle, Australia. We unload alumina here from load port of Gladstone, Australia using vacuum unloaded and discharge 35-40000 tonnes in around 50 hrs.
