New connecting rods. Had grp connecting rods, but this year we are trying the mgp rods! Both are aluminum, and look awesome. We will see how they work!

Them MGP look like a nice set of rods. I can't wait to hear how they fit and hold up. All the guys I know run GRP and Carrlio. It is funny hearing how long you've used your GRP rods. So many guys run 60 passes and change. To man, I ain't got cash like that. The last set of aluminum rods I ran was back in 2002 I believe, I ran Child And Albert. I now just run Oliver billet max series rods. They had hold 3k no problem and have 3 yrs and 603 passes on them. I just ordered a new set with new diamond pistons.

MGP over GRP anyday. MGP is what I use. Much stronger and beefier. A little heavier is to be expected. The owner Michael Giannone was a real knowledgeable guy, sad to hear of his passing.. Definitely spin the crank and check balance with the new weights. Ideally, when swapping aluminum rods, you stick with same rods and weight so it is just a simple swap. Check your quench distance and deck height with the longer rod..020" doesn't sound like a lot, but if it is higher you will need a thicker head gasket. Aluminum rods require .055"-.060" deck height, more with a lot of boost to slow flame speed. Compression being 9.6 is 2 full points too LOW from what you should be at on Methanol. 11.5 up to 40 or so lbs. You are definitely leaving power on the table with that low compression.. hope this helps.
@michaelwahl9281
@michaelwahl9281 3 жыл бұрын
I was surprised to see compression ratio that low. Seems like most with meth run 11+ high as 13
@vengeanceizmine9878
@vengeanceizmine9878 3 жыл бұрын
@@michaelwahl9281 It depends on boost levels. The smaller boost levels can run more static compression, higher you run less. Minimum I set it at is 11.5 for HIGH boost levels on Methanol.. more static with less.

His son Anthony is just as passionate and knowledgeable. Hands down MGP over GRP. V gains stole Michael's company. Michael his wife and young son fought back to bring a better product to the world. They put their whole lives into supporting the need for a more robust connecting rod. There are significant improvements that go unnoticed with comparison of the grp vrs the MGP. Testing has proven this.

Gotta say my jaw dropped when I saw that one piston out of your engine. Cant say I have ever seen a piston reused with damage that significant. I know you said you smother out the tough edges but I am still surprised that you didn’t have detonation issues in that hole. Guess I have to chalk it up to practical experience vs the textbook cause it certainly seemed to work ok. You the man John.
@vengeanceizmine9878
@vengeanceizmine9878 3 жыл бұрын
You would be surprised what you can actually get away with if need be. Most of what people think matters, doesn't in the big picture. The engine just doesn't see what people see most of the time. Walk through the pits of the heavy hitters and watch what they do to fix issues in order to go rounds... you'll be amazed.

John, you might look into the lead times for Diamond pistons. All the custom piston manufacturers will have at least some lead time, but Diamond has been pretty good for me over the years and the price is competitive. You are a great example for budget racers everywhere that if you know what really matters and inspect it well, you can run parts that most people assume you can't and still go really quick with solid reliability.

@@TurboJohnRacing sounds like a plan. I could use a nice get away for a weekend of racing. I haven't had one in a while. I've been in the same house for nearly 24 years, and lived in the same town for 50 years. Moving is enough of a shock to the system, but to go to a different city into an area where I know don't know anyone who lives close by ... it's daunting. But for first time in my life I'll have a decent shop that I can fit 4 cars in with room to work and two with lots of space. It's just not tall enough for a lift, which sucks, but it's way better than anything I've ever had, so I'm really excited about it, it's just taking a lot out of me including race car funds. Once I get the old place sold I'll be back to the good, but it's gonna be pretty lean for a few months.

No mention on the video, do you plan to rebalance your crank with the new heavier connecting rods? Just finished watching and see you're good to go. FWIW 40g heavier on the small end is enough to develop a vibration, most notably in the 2K to 3K range, although unlikely in a race application such as yours.

What’s the most affordable way to get things balanced? This is what I’m worried about, considering swapping out to the summit pro ls pistons and rods and stock crank
@yarrdayarrdayarrda
@yarrdayarrdayarrda 3 жыл бұрын
@@timweb1510 It all comes down to the difference in weights between the old and new components. If the new components are lighter, the balance is easy because they make corrections by drilling the counterweights. If they are heavier, that is where it gets expensive. Typically there is relatively few factory balance holes they can add to correct the imbalance. In the early engines (gen 2 350) you could cheat and make some correction on the harmonic if necessary, but the LS balancer isn't keyed so there is no actual reference to how it is timed on the crank. That leaves installing heavy metal if required, which is cylindrical tungsten slugs press fit in the counterweights as required. (tungsten is roughly double the weight of cast iron) The back of the crank can be corrected on the flexplate so long as it is reinstalled the same way as when it was balanced. (heavy metal can be installed in the back counterweight, but that likely requires removing the crank reluctor wheel, more work. I'm afraid that all you can do is find a local shop that does balancing and give you an estimate on the cost, maybe call them first, they might want a sample of the old rod and piston and the new rod and piston to get an idea of the different component weights. If this becomes cost prohibitive, sometimes it's cheaper to get a forged stroker crank and the appropriate rods and pistons since most of the time they have enough counterweight to balance without heavy metal. Good luck!!

How many hits do you get on your aluminum rods? I can tell you from past experience on a 6.2 aluminum GRP on a 4.00 stroke 9.5 deck at about 75 to 85 licks I had a failure twice on two separate builds. The GRP rods don’t like to be run at high horsepower at high RPMs for 75 or so hits. I put a mark on the intake with a marker every hit. But I tried a set of MGPs and I got 105 passes and took the engine a part because I lifted a ring landing and the MGP rods were just starting to squash the bearing. Just wondering do you keep up with your hits and if so how many you like to get on a set of aluminum rods?? Don’t be like me and run them to they fail LMAO🤦‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️🤦‍♂️

The water from the meth would scare me away from L19s. Hydrogen embrittlement is a real thing. Little moisture on you hands is one thing but all that moisture in the oil from the meth is another. @th600mike3
@th600mike3 3 жыл бұрын
Fwiw the l19 bolts really shouldnt rust, that process starts on a microscopic level during the actual manufacturing. It happens like during the metalurgy treatment or alloy composition or something? But the rust starts microscopically and then goes inwards through the bolt causing complete failure. The place where i believe they come apart is at the threads but ive never gotten confirmation. When you get them from cp or arp or anyone they come in these little sleeves and only on the threads it has this nasty sticky junk on it to protect them from moisture. So i think they really wont have that hydroscopic or whatever hydrogen rust happen from exposure to alcohol. If moisture gets to the threads.... you got bigger problems

DAMN L-19 propaganda. The term you are looking for is 'Hydrogen Embrittlement'. I found myself in a situation when at the time quite a few years back, someone had me convinced that the L19 bolts that came with the Rods that I had just purchased for my big dollar dream build would be a point of failure, as it was to be a seasonal vehicle and unless I was willing to put new rod bolts into it every spring, that I would be asking for trouble. So, being the paranoid person that I was at the time, I couldn't risk and 10's of thousands of dollars that I had invested into the shortblock alone be at risk, so after buying the best rods that I could justify and having them come with L-19's, stupid ME went out and special ordered a set of ARP 3.5's so that I could sleep at night. In for a penny, in for a pound was what I thought at the time. Needless to say, fastforward years later and everyone is running ARP2000's safely with far less cash invested even into the Rods themselves and STUPID ME bought into the hype from some ridiculous article written by some big time engine builder on the Internet....and peer pressure. Nothing wrong with ARP2000 bolts and if the hype is too much for some (like me) just buy Carrillo Rods...WMC or CARR bolts to choose from.....no 8740/ARP2000/L-19/625/ARP3.5...... just 2 choices, Nice and easy ;)
