Short video on cleaning up the frame and getting other parts cleaned and ready for reassembly.
First things - clean the dang frame. Years of road grime had to be removed before I could get on with the restoration of the steel subframe and aluminum frame & swing arm. The aluminum parts were anodized and that old, damaged coating had to be removed before I could proceed with proper repairs & restoration. Pretty happy with the results.
From now on, parts will be going back on. I bought all new bearings for the wheels, steering and swing arm/rear suspension. Got new valve seals, piston rings and a whole bunch of fasteners, grommets & other small hardware too.
I'm not affiliated with anyone, but IMPEX Japan is the bomb for parts - prices are good and it's all NOS/OEM stuff at aftermarket prices.

The frame looks fantastic. Can you go into a little more detail about the removal process for the anodizing? What kind of company did you use? You mentioned re-anodizing the frame was expensive, can you share the price estimate? I’ve seen a few frame restoration videos, yours turned out much more faithful to the original. Excellent work!

Thanks so much for the kind words!! Yes, that's what I was going for - the OEM finish with whatever tools & technique I had at hand. The anodizing was removed by electro-chemical dipping and was about $80 each for both the frame and the swing arm. All ferrous metals had to be removed. The frame/swing arm were cleaned (best I could) and then brought to Alberta Base Anodizing in Calgary for the removal of the anodizing. The process to remove it was dipping into an acid solution while applying an electric current. To re-apply the anodizing, the frame had to be perfect (as in completely vapour blasted) or else all minor imperfections would be seen/amplified by the new clear anodizing. I was quoted $160 CAD (about $130 USD) for each part (frame/swing arm). I probably would have done all that if I had found someone with a vapour blaster that was big enough to hold the frame but I didn't want to risk of anodizing glaring flaws into the finish. With the way I went, it was a bit more labour intensive but the 2k matte clear paint was only $60 and I can repair that at any time if needed. Once I get some of the brackets and other fittings back on the bike I'm sure it will look nearly flawless.

@@KensWorldRestorations Thanks for the information, the cost of the anodizing work is a much less than I expected. I think the path you took with the clear coat is wise, you make a great point about being able to make repairs if needed. Looking forward to your next video.

Hello Kensworld... The restoration services for this frame were wonderful. I was here imagining the work that went into this project and its creation with these very detailed curves that aim to give structural reinforcement to the assembly. Very good... waiting for new videos. Thanks .... Fireball

Great work Ken! Really makes me wish I went to that detail on my FZR, maybe in 5 or so years when it’s due it’s next one 😂

Awesome job, Makes me wish i had gone this route with my frame. In the end my one cleaned up pretty well, it does have a patina of age but overall is really nice. I'm painting my cases at the moment then the engine can be assembled, bar the head, which is looking like it might need some machining work to the valve seats. 😟 Other bikes in the stable have been demanding my attention, so the FZR has been put on the back burner until the funds are replenished. 😄

Thanks for the kind words Andrew. Like I said, I can overthink anything - this part was no different. I was happy with the result so now I can move forward. I'm counting on my valve seals being shot and having to reseat them as well. I bought std piston rings too (from Japan) in anticipation of having to replace those after a honing job. Overall, I think the bottom end is in good condition so with a bit of luck and some basic top-end work, the engine will be going back in quickly. Water pump, clutch and all that stuff is to be expected as well. Got a super deal on all the bearings (UK). I'm off to work tonight to catch the red-eye...my bike funds are getting low too and I snagged a few days of OT.

Had to comeback and rewatch. I’m going to look at a first year 900rr and someone was going to polish the frame but only did a little spot if I buy it I’ll have to clean the frame up

Where the hell are you finding these absolute GEMS?!?!?!? First year 900RR? Wow! I was still hoping for a complete vapour blasting job but maybe next one. I’m eyeballing a 1998 Honda CR205R just for something different but the frames are similar. Can’t wait to see yours!

You did a great job. It is looking like new again. Did you also clear coated the yokes?
@KensWorldRestorations
@KensWorldRestorations 5 ай бұрын
Thanks!! Yes, both the top and bottom yokes are done. The top one was given an OEM silver and then sanded away some of the paint to reveal the brushed look then the whole thing cleared with satin. The lower was just cleaned and cleared. Also going to paint/sand/brush/clear all the foot peg (mounting bracket) assemblies - they were all painted and cleared OEM so I'll have to get those cleaned up and redone as well before I get them back on.

I think the main aluminum frame is 15kg. The total frame like you see it is about 22kg.
