For years I've called Alvin Lee the greatest guitarist of the classic rock era that no one ever seems to talk about, and that's a sad ass commentary. I'll tell you right now, Alvin makes my top 5 all-time seven days a week and twice on Sunday along with (in no particular order) Stevie Ray Vaughan, Duane Allman, Johnny Winter, & Jimi Hendrix. No disrespect intended to Terry Kath or the great Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher who also seems to be on that overlooked list.

Saw Alvin at St. Petersburg Bayfront Center circa 1973 . He had put on a great show that night ! He did an oncore, and the crowd went wild again . When they finished the house lights came on and the crowd started to leave . My friends and I were sitting off to the side letting the crowd thin before we got up to leave . As we were about to vacate we saw a roadie run out frantically and set up a microphone . We all looked at each other knowing Alvin was coming back out ! We rushed to the front of the stage where the mic was standing . Alvin and the band came back out again and played to what may have been just a couple hundred fans . One of my many favorite concert memories ! That I can recall anyway ! 😮😂

I had 3 albums with ten years after and the sshhh album i played the hellmout of it, had to get another needle! Truly very underrated and one of the best ever, gone too soon! Always be remembered for his woodstock gig, fantastic!

I was serving over in Vietnam on the USS Midway and every time we headed back to the states our ships DJ would play “Goin Home” by Ten Years After and when I hear that song it always brings good memories. Thank you Alvin Lee and RIP.

And he did it with no effects, and that was not a studio retake/retake/edited edited retake. That was done cold. I saw Alvin Lee live in Pittsburgh,I always said, and I still say, he is the most accurate guitar player I have ever seen live...not only that, he’s doing it on a 335. Not the easiest guitar to play those lo bar chords on.. That was a different era. It was a pleasure in those days to turn your radio on. Fantastic musicians and bands constantly. Not only Alvin Lee, the Beatles, the stones, Led Zeppelin, cream, Santana, Joe Cocker, Hendrix, Joplin, the kinks, moody blues, Allman brothers, grateful dead, The doors, Robin Trower, Pink Floyd, yes, iron butterfly, Chicago, Creedence, Jefferson airplane, on and on and on, none of this synthetic synthesized computer generated drum machine music that we have today. I never turn the radio on in my car anymore. Never. Alvin Lee was part of the best years of rock ‘n’ roll. He was right up there at the top with the best... millennials and generation X, you missed it!!

I was lucky enough to see most of the artists listed above. Didn't see the Dead but they were dead to me..never liked them. The rest of the list were in their own singular way so distinct and had the purity of their own sound, you can't pick any of them out and say "well, they sound like that other group". Such an array of unique talent. So glad I saw them when I did and the tickets were outrageously priced...something like $3.50. Those were indeed the days. I enjoyed every single concert although I regret that I was a bit too high at some of them but, hey, it was part of the whole experience at the time. You really became one with the artists onstage and with their beautiful songs. Good clean acid, peyote or other head drugs helped you really get into it. And I never turn the radio on either....what the hell for? some rap crap? Some sleaze twerking when you're trying to find something decent on the tube? Give me a break! You missed the best generation of musicians ever. I don't think it can ever be replicated. I just found a ticket stub I had in a box in an old drawer..amazed to see it was for the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Miami on Nov. 24, 1968. I don't remember being there at all. And have no idea who drove back home to Ft. Lauderdale. I'm sure I had a great time but sometimes, like I said, I had the tendency to get too high. It's somewhere in my memory bank, I'm sure. It would be great to undergo regression therapy and bring it out of your subconscious, wouldn't it? Like seeing it for the first time. What a trip our generation's been on. We've been some of the luckiest people that have ever lived on this big blue beautiful marble zooming through the cosmos.

Good job mentioning the Kinks, definitely my favorite band. I will say this isn't lost on all us youngsters. Also there are some good modern bands. Jack White and The Raconteurs are pretty good for adding a new twist to good old fashioned sounds, and my personal favorite modern band The Nude Party, sounds very much like the late 60s through 70s, I suggest you look them up (a six piece band that makes all their own sounds).

@@michaelvc2884 Jack White is a good songwriter. His guitar skill to the untrained ear is atrocious. I like the garage feel of his music but technically in guitar is ok. Im 40 so im in-between the older gen and the new. These new kids can technically tear up a guitar. They just need to be taught that SOUL is what these dudes had. Told my friends son that while we were pickin Saturday night. The old dudes had it all plus it was new. We just rehash it.

I lived in East Anglia for 5 years of the early 1970's. I can say that England Loved Alvin Lee !! I travelled all over the British Isles..Every where I went, I heard nothing but praise as to what Alvin Lee was doing !!! I too have nothing but praise for his volume of works.

Saw TYA in Munster Sports Halle Germany in 1972 with Robin Trower as support. What an amazing night that was...... Alvin Lee is such an amazing guitarist. RIP Alvin and thanks for the amazing music over the years.

Saw him with Ten Years After in 1973 with Robin Trower & King Crimson at Tarrant County Convention Center, Fort Worth, Texas. Caught him again with the Alvin Lee Band in 1984 at The Agora in Dallas. Incredible talent, and a huge influence, RIP, Alvin Lee.

i saw Alvin Lee and band in a cozy little theater in London in the winter of 1970. A tiny place. The stage was only two feet high. He blew the place away.

Drove from Boston to Fitchburg, Mass in 1977 to see these guys, great live band. Got pulled over on the way home, tripping, the cop asked me to open the trunk, my 3 friends are drinking laughing and howling with huge cooler of beers while I'm trying to not get arrested, statie gave me a Huge break, got back in my red 71 cuda back to Boston. Whew

I saw them same tour in Boston at the Garden ,Humble Pie opened , then Cactus , and Ten Years After came on third and blew the roof off the place. I was lucky (and cranked up enough) to make my way front and center.I got to shake Alvin's hand. He was my guitar hero then and is still now . For me he's best , bar none!

Alvin was shredding before the word even entered the guitar vocabulary. Saw him at The Marquee with TYA, phenomenal guitarist that, to me, is inexcusable why he's not in the Hall of Fame. Hendrix would have loved this version of Hey Joe.

I saw him play this tune at the Stone on Broadway. Alvin was a man's guitar player. Lots of clones and copy cats out there trying to play like other guitarists. But there will never be another Alvin Lee. No one can or will play like him

Jimmy page is probably the most creative, but Alvin Lee and Richie Blackmore are the most accurate. They can duplicate what is on their albums, in person. You know instantly, that’s satisfaction, that’s can’t you hear me knocking, that’s start me up, that’s paint it black, that’s Angie, that’s waiting on a friend,.Nobody even comes close to having the most recognized introductions to his body of work than Keith Richards.. i’m just grateful that I had those fantastic bands all at the same moment in time..

Alvin Lee's was a great inspiration growing up starting guitar in 68. He truly is a Rock Guitar GOD! One of the Best Players of electric guitar. His idol was also, Chuck Berry...We lost him way to soon! Expecially over a operation?

I knew Alvin from the time I was about 14 years old, not only could he play Rock & Roll he was a great finger picker ala Chet Atkins. He came from Mansfield and he and his band the Blue Jays often played at my local Youth Club. As time passed by I formed a group and supported him, Boz Burrell later to join Bad Company was in my band and Fats Dean later to join Brian Auger. Alvin liked to play my guitar but as I gradually became a jazz guitarist we didn't meet all that often although, I remember asking the Marquee Club to give him a gig and saw him playing guitar for the Walker Brothers. Years later he lived next door to Boz in Spain and Boz died during a rehearsal with him. I frequently posted guitar charts to him via Boz. Soon, after the time Alvin has his Gibson stolen I announced over the microphone (during a gig at the Nottingham Rainbow Rooms) that I had a Gibson that fitted that description (with the stickers he liked). Someone in the audience phoned him and he came in ten minutes later red in the face and absolutely steaming, it took awhile for him to see the joke.

Alvin/TYL recorded this performance for OGWT on 20th November 1979. On the 26th I attended their gig at the Birmingham Odeon, the first date of a short UK autumn tour. It was a truly memorable night, made extra special by getting to shake hands with Alvin at the end of the show. A precious personal memory of a man who absolutely was/is one of the greats.

Holy trinity of rock guitar-Jimi Henddix (most innovative), Alvin Lee (nobody cleaner and faster) and Jimmy Page (most intricate). I can't believe he's not in hall of fame. Ten Years After was an awesome band. Leo Lyons was my favorite bass player, too. RIP Alvin. I can't keep from crying. Still love the first album, A Space In Time and Rock And Roll Music To The World- three of the best albums in my collection. Rock on, brother.
