After watching the 1st half of the vid, b4 my match Saturday morning, about dominant shoulder up, & head to the side, I used it from the 1st serve to the end of the match. Gave me just enough extra momentum in those tight situations, to get it over the net. Not one double after 3 hrs. Now I just watched the 2nd half of the video, even more to help, looking forward 2 my next match, so I can do the full shoulder see-saw, thank you very much😘

Thanks Kevin. Agree that this is an important aspect of effective geometry at contact. I've heard this idea also described in terms of "don't try to have your hitting hand straight above your hitting shoulder at contact" (looking from behind), which creates an almost straight vertical line of arm and racquet at contact (looking from behind). With that geometry, apparently pronation and ISR can't cause the racquet face to go through the ball, but instead would mostly just unhelpfully twirl the racquet around the racquet handle's vertical axis. And so, in contrast to your advised geometry, hand above shoulder would mean pronation/ISR are not available to contribute to power.

Excellent explanation! I have four kids at various levels of tennis, and it is so hard to take them from the beginners pancake serve to a proper serve. Teaching them or their friends that they need to swing on edge is so counter intuitive to everyone at first. I think this video will help my younger ones understand the mechanics and make the transition. Heck, I have a big serve, but this added clarity to what I am doing and may help when I get off track! Well done, as usual.

I'm one of those "has beens" but had a decent serve at one time. The light bulb went on when a tennis instructor complemented my service action (even though there was no consistency) and then told me to do everything the same EXCEPT (pointing to a court light slightly in front and to my right--I'm right handed) aiming to hit the ball over the light rather than into the court in front of me. I thought it was a silly suggestion and figured I'd send the instructor to go pick the ball up somewhere well outside the fences. To my amazement I hit the best serve of my life (up until that point) and have taught many aspiring tennis players using the same suggestion. It really does work for those who are aiming for some target inside the court.

continental grip gives more power on flat serve too, not only to add spin, thanks to pronation adding more speed to the racket head and lets you hit the ball higher too. this is serve 101 right? I always thought shoulder position was also to hit the ball as high as possible. like if you were reaching to catch something high, you re obviously not going to keep your shoulders level. but it does make sense that upon contact your shoulder and arm are aligned so that shoulder rotation and arm swing do add up

The shoulder position is the same for all serves but the amount of rotation to hit the ball is different depending on the type of serve you want to hit. If your hitting a flat/slice serve you're going to rotate more then a kick. Thanks

OH... ou...I think the lack of letting the non dominant shoulder stay semi up (not bending enough) is the reason why service motion sometimes feels so wrong and on the verge of hurting something. Makes sense, now You explained it. Welp, tomorrow I'll try to put it to test. TY.

Good point. The mechanics that explained in the video remain the same for all three serves. The difference to create spin is the path of the racket and the amount of rotation in the hips. If you want to kick serve, you will not rotate your hips as much as I demonstrated in the video compared to if you want a flat or slice serve, you will rotate your hips like I did the video. But the shoulder position still remains the same. Thanks for watching.
