Bon Jovi's "New Jersey" album from 1988 was an absolute monster. "Born To Be My Baby", "Lay Your Hands On Me", "Bad Medicine", hit after hit. This was the biggest band in the country at the close of the decade.

@bloodyjasonmask3721 GNR & Bon Jovi might be on par with each other for the late 1980s. Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet sold 28 million Albums in 1986, the next year (1987) GNR's Appetite for Destruction sold 30 million albums, & THEN the following year (1988) Bon Jovi's New Jersey sold 18 million ralbums. Between these 2 bands they had the highest record sales for a rock album from 1986-1988.
@jp3813
@jp3813 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonmistretta4295 Also gotta mention Def Leppard b/c Hysteria was a gigantic hit as well, which was the long-awaited sequel to 1983's monstrous Pyromania. Plus U2 w/ The Joshua Tree. The competition was fierce back then, and that's only for the bands. The solo artists were also on a roll. Although we gotta remember that sales have continued to accumulate all over the world throughout the decades. Hence, it's not like movie box office where earnings are most often frozen in a specific year. I believe Slippery When Wet was announced as the best-selling record of 1987 in America, while George Michael's Faith was the US top seller in 1988.

The 70s and 80s were extremely serious times on one end, and our music reflected that....but at the same time the 70s and 80s were FUN and our music reflected that also! I know y'all hear it all the time but we really did grow up during the best of times. I really wish y'all had been there with us.

That is how impressive his music was and is especially in this era. I am glad you two enjoyed it so much. There are lots of parallels between Slippery When Wet & New Jersey b/c the band was aiming to see if they could achieve worldwide success again: You Give Love a Bad Name = Bad Medicine; Livin' on a Prayer = Born to Be My Baby; Never Say Goodbye = I'll Be There for You; Wanted Dead or Alive = Stick to Your Guns; etc... I highly recommend Blood on Blood (studio version). Afterwards, Jon & Richie temporarily went solo and explored different musical styles.

Hey Y'all (again)! Man...I was super-excited to see this one show up on my Notifications just now, as I think this is one of their better tunes overall. The arrangement, the dynamics, the lyrics, Jon's vocals (and the other guys singing backing vocals, obviously in the video), the nonstop bass line, the hard hitting drums from Tico, David Bryan on the keys - always fantastic, and last but certainly not least is Richie Sambora's guitar work, especially that ripping solo! For more of my favorites from this amazing Band: "In These Arms"; "Bed of Roses"; "Keep the Faith"; "Living In Sin"; "Raise Your Hands"; "Blood On Blood"; and "My Guitar Lies Bleeding in my Arms". As always, thanks so much for consistently doing what you guys do, I love it! As always, Peace & Love to All...

This band is very near and dear to my heart as a close friend of mine who lost his life in the line of duty in 2005 was a huge fan of the band and was a part-time songwriter because of them. He’s been gone almost 18 years now but I still miss him every day. Jon’s song Blaze of Glory and the band’s song Thank You For Loving Me were played at his funeral. He had just gotten engaged over Christmas right before he was killed.

The album ''New Jersey'' was supposed to be a double-album. Songs were already written for two discs. Desmond Child, the genius songwriter behind their biggest hits (''You Give Love a Bad Name'', ''Livin' On a Prayer'', ''Bad Medicine'', ''Born To Be My Baby'') wrote plenty of tunes for that album just as good as ''Livin' On A Prayer''. All of them are now obtainable on KZfaq as demos (''Love Is War'', ''Backdoor To Heaven'', ''Full Moon High'', ''Rosie'', ''Does Anybody Fall In Love Anymore? ''). Some of those demos were given to other artists (Cher, Kane Roberts, Richie Sambora on his solo album). All that to say that whenever you listen to Bon Jovi in the 80s (86-88), you almost always have to say a big thank you to Desmond Child.

The New Jersey Album this track came off was fantastic from start to finish. It also made Bon Jovi even more popular than they were after Slippery when wet. The endless touring for them put them in a place where they needed a break from one another and we wouldnt get another Bon Jovi album until 1992. Jon did have more public success with the Young Guns 2 soundtrack in 1990 where he played with some of the industries biggest names and legends. Some of his Bon Jovi band mates played on some of the tracks along with Elton John, Jeff Beck, and Little Richard. The highlights of that album are of course "Blaze of Glory" and one of my favorites "Miracle"

I thought it very apropos that Amber mentioned getting "Livin' On A Prayer" vibes from this song, because it's the "part two" of Tommy & Gina's story!! (Go re-listen to "Livin' On A Prayer" and you'll get it-- the story of two NJ kids trying to make it all work out!!) -- BB&P!! 🙏☮

Ya'll HAVE to check out Jon & Richie, 1989 MTV VMAs. Acoustic "Living on a Prayer/Wanted Dead or Alive". It is fantastic. The kicker to this video is, it was near the end of a long tour and the band was at odds. No speaking to each other.

You've seen Bon Jovi in the studio, now to REALLY see what they were like live, you need to check out their video for "Lay Your Hands on Me." It was the first song from the New Jersey album and the opening song for the concerts on the Jersey Syndicate tour with them and another Jersey band, Skid Row. From the opening build up, to the pyrotechnics, to Jon being launched onto the stage to the band performing part of the concert about 10 feet over the crowds' heads, it shows exactly how their live performances went on that tour. To this day, one of the best shows I've ever seen. And mentioning Skid Row, you still need to react to an actual rock song of theirs. I think you've hit their three biggest power ballads, but have so far missed what they were really all about. You could check out their glam model sounds form their very first single, "Youth Gone Wild," or their much heavier "Monkey Business" or go full on Metallica-speed-metal-like "Slave to the Grind," which was once judged by fans to be the 3rd best heavy metal song EVER. I'd personally shoot big and go for "Slave to the Grind," but if you want to have a little Jersey Syndicate tour vibe, go with "Youth Gone Wild" followed immediately by "Lay Your Hands on Me." It'll sum up the best double header I ever say in concert.

David Bryan (Rashbaum) is a phenomenal keyboard player. Bon Jovi wouldn't be the same without him. He is classical trained (with a Juliard professor), and dropped out of college when Bon Jovi was signed. He has written and scored Broadway musicals. Bon Jovi called him first to ask him to stay with the band once they were signed. Jon and Ritchie Sambora get so much acclaim but David Bryan is the secret ingredient to the Bon Jovi sound. He played on every album.

I'm with you Jay. Bad Medicine more than Living On a Prayer, lol! I'd forgotten how much I love this video because I love the studio footage but I love how they didn't go right into the song like other artists do for their "studio" videos. Richie's solo and Tico killing the drums are some of my favorites from them. Y'all still have SOOO much early Bon Jovi to hit up. All the songs from their first 4 albums, especially the latter two at the height of their fame, are a must hear.

"Born To Be My Baby" was huge in 1988. If you look closely at the lyrics, you find that this song is a sort of (not official) sequel of "Livin' On A Prayer".

Great song and reaction. Amber looked like she had a lot of fun with this one. Check out "Living in Sin". This is a song that was ban from radio for many years and you had to buy the album to here it. Glad to see y'all getting back to some Rock and Roll. Get back to Jeff Healey also. "Roadhouse Blue's" would be a great one from Jeff.

Bon Jovi struck Platinum with their second trip to record on the West Coast of Canada. The same studio and producer as their previous Platinum album "Slippery When Wet". I agree with the earlier comments to react to "Wanted Dead of Alive" from "Slippery When Wet". 🎸😎

This is one of my favourite Jovi songs! They were Kings of writing love songs with a hair band/ power rock riff, not just power ballads. 'Die For You' is another amazing track you guys should check out, 'One Wild Night' is another great rocking song from later in their career and 'Thank You For Loving Me' is a great example of their power ballad greatness.
