I was asked if I was running out of space which is a valid question considering I keep on building new model railways! Recorded from a Members livestream on 6/6/24

They say when you run out of space inside go into the garden, then when you run out of space there join a ride on railway club like cockcrow railway and buy a loco. and when you run out of space there buy and renovate a disused branch line from the beaching cuts and restore it to working public condition then you will never run out of space!

That must be why so many of the volunteers at the heritage railway I'm a part of also have model railways 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

You can never have to many model trains!

That is until you decide to move out of your parents house into a smaller property and realise where am I going to put all these boxes of model trains. This is the situation I am going through.

Space is always an issue indoors. I’ve been trying to build a 009 layout to fit into a box for storage for 4 years. I keep restarting the project but I finally got a track layout, but it’s having to unpack it to start modelling and then repack it at the end of ‘session’. Takes the fun out of it a bit. That’s why I like you guys who do the internet stuff it helps me to keep the interest, otherwise I would go back to armchair modelling through the magazines.

I do think that's one of the biggest advantages of the railway modelling community on KZfaq - you don't just get to see a finished product like in the magazines but in a lot of cases you can see it be built from the ground up and actually operating. It can allow people to feel like they're a part of the process when they wouldn't normally be able to. Thanks for watching 😃

I only have a few, and no layout. I just collect good models I like for a decent price and either keep them in their original box or tucked in a cabinet. You don’t have to stop collecting, but always be weary of space.

I feel like those who are more collectors like yourself tend to get a lot of stick from "proper modellers" about having models but no layout to run them on. It does show that there's multiple ways to enjoy the hobby and no-one should be disparaged for how they choose to take part. Thanks for watching 😃

Space is always too easily filled but you are cleanly thinking and planning around the issue

There has definitely been a clear focus on creating space for layouts - things like the suitcase layout or modular layout are clear examples of this. But eventually I am going to get into a situation where I don't have storage space for them all 😅 Thanks for watching 🤩

In Japan the have built up mega-layouts in cities and you can take a train(or 2 ) and rent track to run it on !! great idea for people with limited space ( given the generally small size of Japanese houses .)

Communal model railways sounds like a fantastic idea - maybe our new government should look into them! Thanks for watching 😃

In the last 2 years I've built 4 different layouts... my situation is slightly different of course but I think that's more than most people would achieve in the same time. Thanks for watching 👍

I have gained quite a collection now which is great for running variety. Only issue I have is that they need to all be moved from my parents house to a smaller two bedroom maisonette flat. Luckily the second bedroom is becoming a storage space and possibly where I can put a layout (or a secure shed in the garden)

If you're clever with how you design a potential layout you can use the space underneath for storage. Thanks for watching 😃

My grandfather built his own sit on engine and built his own track around his garden - He asked for some one to look after his engine and we haven’t seen it since but this was back in the late 70s or early 80s- he was a very clever man and had his own small and big lathes and was bombed and torpedoed in ww 2 more times than uncle Albert

Awesome! I've always wanted to get into the ride on railways side of things but I just don't have the time... or the space... or the money... but apart from that 😅 Thanks for watching 👍

The fact that it's worth directly addressing the issue of space justifies TT:120.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Ай бұрын
I think the question was based more on the fact that I've built a lot of layouts in various different gauges. But TT:120 is definitely a consideration for those tight on space, as is N Gauge, Z, T, etc. Thanks for watching 😃

The answer is not what you expect. You clearly need a coach or a box van! On the same railway as wardle so you got a freight train

I've a longstanding dream to build a layout down one side of a Mk1 carriage with return loops at each end. The issue isn't ambition, it's funding... unless you're offering 😉 Thanks for watching 👍

Well, space was a major factor in my going digital, cost being the other. You do need a powerful PC, but you can use that for many applications. I'm not suggesting that you, or anyone, give up their traditional model railways, it's just an option for those "space-challenged". Indeed, I for one very much enjoy your vids, and every time I watch one I start thinking, "surely I can squeeze an 009 with a couple of Quarry Hunslets in here"!!
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Ай бұрын
I definitely think the whole simulation area is a great option for those who don't have space - or even those who do but have bigger ambitions. After all with simulators you can have a new "layout" every day if you like. Although 009 is certainly a great physical option for those with limited space! Thanks for watching 😃

I’m trying to build a modular layout in my one bedroom flat. Reallly pushed for space though. Could I ask which microphone you have in this video. I’ve just been using the built in mics on my iPhone for audio.

Hi there, it's a Rode NT1A - had it for years and it's just a really good all round condenser mic. It's not often it comes out of my home studio to be honest as it's constantly in use. Thanks for watching 🤩

Hi what is the difference between G scale and 0 scale or are they technically the same and run on the same track ?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Ай бұрын
About 13mm... O gauge runs on 32mm track while G scale runs on 45mm track. O gauge is also standard gauge while G scale tends to be narrow gauge. The 45mm equivalent to O gauge would be Gauge 1. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Why not get some volunteers? I'm sure they would love to help build it and maintain it.

It's not really big enough to warrant having outside involvement at this time. It's essentially a small oval with a couple of sidings in a flowerbed so if I was going to spend any time on it or bring in help then it would have to be something a bit more interesting. Thanks for watching 😃
