Happy New Year, guys! This is my reaction to Back to the Future. I WILL TELL YOU THIS: I have no idea how this movie got away with the things it did lmaaaoooo (you know what i'm talking about), especially in the 80's lolololol. I was indeed scandalized!! I was clutching my pearls!.....i also have to admit that it was entertaining to watch hahahaa and yeah, the time traveling was nice too. I'll see you in Back to the Future II :)

Honestly, back in 1985 most people just thought of it as an amusing premise. Lorraine has no idea that it's her son. Marty is properly repulsed by the idea. No real physical affection occurs between the two until the very end and when it does, Lorraine can just feel that it's very wrong. That's it. We just enjoyed the film

The mother/son thing is clearly meant to be humorously uncomfortable and awkward. Lorraine has no idea who Marty actually is, but Marty knows and is rightfully uncomfortable with Lorraine's unwanted romantic advances. Funny thing is, the filmmakers struggled to find a Hollywood studio to make the movie, and Disney outright rejected the script based mainly on the awkward mother/son angle. Little did any of them know that they were turning down what would become the biggest hit of 1985.

incest situations can be good for both humour or dark situations...depending on the context: in Back to the Future they use it as humour...but a great example of a dark version is the film Pinn where the brother eventually reveals he wants to rape his sister...

I mean, I think Disney was probably right to be wary, their brand is a very family-oriented one. Them passing on it doesn't necessarily mean that they thought it was bad, just that it was wrong for them. They had no way of knowing if it was going to turn out to be a cultural touchstone or the Folgers Incest Commercial.

I continue to be amazed at how young people relate to this film in relation to the relationship between Marty and Lorraine: for me a brilliant and entertaining device, but young people today find it bordering on indecency. It's true that times are changing for everyone.

It’s a different timeline. His first self is still in 1955. The future in 1985 is a second timeline.

Because now he's a stranger to his family in this new timeline. Obviously his memories won't aline with the past events in the new timeline so he's not going to know anything about what happened or what his family members are like as people.

@@Hal2718 Yeah, Marty's brother and sister seem like completely different people from what little we see of them. I feel like there's going to be a lot of awkward conversations between Marty and his siblings in the future because any time they talk about anything that happened during childhood, Marty is going to have completely different stories in most cases. Especially because the family seems a LOT wealthier and more successful in the new timeline. Marty is going to remember the time they got to go a waterpark for a day, and they'll be like, "no, we spent an entire week at Disney World that summer." Or someone will bring up their trip to Europe, which Marty didn't go on.

there could also be hidden repercussions that Amanda instinctively realizes. Specially when we see it actually changed the future, at least in this version of time travel... Also Doc Brown clearly stated the risks... and his face fell when he heard George became more assertive when he was never like that originally.

Honestly, people did not have a problem the incestuous themes in the film. Audiences just found it awkward but funny, like an episode of Three's Company only more clever. I dont know why it creeps everybody out so much nowadays.

Because their sense of morality has become warped. They'll munch their popcorn while watching two guys smooch each other, but freak out over the awkwardness of Marty's mom coming on to him as a girl. It's all a matter of brainwashing.

Chuck Berry wrote the song Johnny Be Good. He was one of the first early rock and rollers. Also, the teacher that tells Marty his band is too loud is the lead singer of the band that plays the theme to the movie Huey Lewis and the News.

Chuck Berry was so influential in electric guitar that he practically inspired everyone. And his typical song and guitar playing is in this song that Marty played, Johnny B Goode. So the comedic paradox is that... Chuck's cousin holds the phone up so that Chuck could hear this "new sound" that Chuck was looking for, but it was actually his own song!

If you don't know, the storytelling principle you mention about the plutonium theft early in the movie is called Chekhov's Gun. Chekhov's Gun refers to any seemingly unimportant element that becomes significant later on in the story. “Remove everything that has no relevance to the story,” Chekhov wrote. “If you say in the first chapter that there is a rifle hanging on the wall, in the second or third chapter it absolutely must go off." Chekhov's Skill is similar. You should introduce a skill that a character has that someone of their background might not normally have, before they actually have to use it. An example here is Marty dodging the 1955 goons on a makeshift skateboard. We've already seen that he skateboards in a similar way on a daily basis. Our main character has some skills in the area to help perform that action, so we believe it when he does it. Back to the Future is one of the best trilogies to have ever been made. Long may it remain untouched.

Even the incidental dialog is important. Doc mentions that he's allergic to all synthetics (fabrics). In 1955, he saves the electrical plug because it snags on his wool pants. Had Doc been wearing the synthetic slacks of the time, that wouldn't have happened. 😁

Yeah, yeah, but when you dislike some movie, you will absolutely make an argument how predictable the movie is. I have seen so many movies that are hated by audience, and with the argument how predictable some of those were. But if the movie is loved by audience, then it is not predictable, it is masterful writing

Technically the plutonium is foreshadowing. It plays no role in the final act. The clock tower would be more akin to chekovs gun.

very good points, there was also the part where Marty plays electric guitar. So many things circle around, there may be 20 elements that are called back, referenced to or clarified in a later scene.

The incest isn't a big deal because it wasn't reciprocated. Marty is repulsed by it & Lorraine doesn't know that's her future son, also Lorraine would've been attracted to any boy that her father ran over(hence why she married loser George), she was boy crazy. It's the rare case of accidental incest which is pretty funny if it doesn't go far. There's a lot of easter eggs in this movie that you can easily miss like The Twin Pine Mall changes to the Lone Pine Mall at the end because Marty ran over 1 of the pine trees the mall was named after or you can see part of the clock tower ledge missing in 1985( after 1955 Doc broke part of it)

I've even seen some who have supposedly gone to film school and/or consider themselves filmmakers, yet have not seen even the most fundamental must see films

We missed the rest of Biff's story when he was arrested and then "operated on" to permanently remove his violent tendencies... years later he got the job detailing. Actually it was weird that he came in the house with the box of books... like he is so familiar to the family that he is allowed in the house without knocking... and that he could touch a packaged delivery... but there could be a backstory to that too.

I always had the same thought from the first time I saw this when it came out. Even if Biff's intent wasn't to rape Lorraine, he was clearly going to molest her at the very least. I wouldn't have anything to do with Biff after that if I were the McFlys.

Analysis of the Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale script is taught in film class. Regarding the script: "Not only does Back To The Future balance its narrative across three timelines - the original 1985, 1955, and the altered 1985 - it does so while developing multiple iterations of more than half a dozen characters - Marty, the McFly family, Biff, Doc Brown, Mr. Strickland - and blending elements of action, adventure, comedy, and technology-driven sci-fi that’s all been made palatable for a young audience".

One of my favorite movies. Saw it in theater when it premiered. I got another time travel movie suggestion for you it's another one of my favorite movies, The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz. It's like Top Gun meets Back to the Future.

Marvin Berry’s cousin was famous rock musician and singer Chuck Berry. Marty was preforming Chucks famous recording of Johnny be good. The scene you skipped over of Marty’s band The Pin Heads auditioning for the school dance, the judge that told him he was too darn loud was famous rock star Huey Lewis who’s band, Huey Lewis and the band, made the theme song and the song Marty was preforming for the school. As for you Michael Jackson reference, he is referenced several times is this trilogy.

Apparently there are no clock repairmen anywhere near this town... Chuck Berry wrote and sung Johnny B. Goode. Released in 1958. In movie, Chuck was seeking a new sound and found it via his cousin Marvin, etc. then released it in early 1958 as this story goes in the movie + the few real facts.

Yes, Amanda! The hoverboard appears in the sequels. The hoverboard in the BTTF universe is manufactured by Mattel, which made people think it was a real product that could be purchased.

Part of that was also because there was a "behind the scenes" interview with one on the directors who joked about them having produced functioning boards that were ready for sale, but Mattel had cold feet at the last moment and the boards were left locked up in a warehouse somewhere. People knew that he was joking of course but it didn't stop everyone sharing that story around and adding to the whole zeitgeist surrounding the movie.

For goodness sakes. It wasn't a romance. It's situational comedy. And it's hilarious! The real take away from Lorraine as a teenager is that she was "hot to trot", unlike the adult Lorraine who said girls shouldn't chase boys.

The cousin, Chuck Berry, whom the band leader calls is the man who invented rock music. More precisely, he's one of a small handful of men who invented rock music and probably the main one. He was the first person inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was inducted on the day it opened.

so Zamekis was really into Freudian Psychoanalysis at the time. in the original script Marty was complaining about his fear around creativity and Jennifer says something like "well Marty my therapist says that stuff is often due to family history" So each movie in the BTTF trilogy represents one of the phases of psychoanalysis. Doc is his doc Marty is the Ego, the self, he is the main character and doesn't want to be called a chicken. He wants a car to be able to go to the lake. George is the Superego, which is the sense of right and wrong that SHOULD be able to restrain the raw desire and violence of the ID. Marty's superego is underdeveloped. Biff is the ID. With an ID that's too strong and a superego that's too week, Marty is unable to be creative, is too egocentric, and is unable to get to the lake with Jennifer. The first of the three phases of psychoanalysis is dealing with the Oedipus complex, where he replaces the father/superego and it's spelled out in the clear Oedipus story in the plot. To deal with it he has to help boost the super ego and support it in supressing the id . Surprizingly the psychoanalytical analogy works for all three movies, but I'll save those for later reactions.

32:59 "At least he tried, which is a lot." I agree. That moment when he steels himself against the fear, accepts the likely outcome, and proceeds to tell Biff "No" anyway is a great one. The film (mostly the score) makes the punch the climax, but that's not George's true heroic moment.

27:25 "She's so horny for her own son." Give her a little credit, she has no idea that Marty is her son. Just some cute guy to her. And now he's brave and heroic, too. When Marty was calling his mom "hot" (yes, that's what he was almost saying), well, she is. It surprised him. At the same time he didn't want to say it or even think it because he DOES know that's his mom, which is why he fell off the bed trying to get away from her.

Yeah.. cause it has ZERO CGI. Unless your movie was called TRON, THE LAST STARFIGHTER, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES (for a hallucination scene), or THE ABYSS)... they didnt have CGI. FX then were done the old fashioned way.

He could NOT "just say he's gay." Not in 1955. That would have been like saying he's a child molester. Wasn't accepted. The movie "got away with the things it did" because previous generations weren't as uptight about judging and canceling everybody for everything as yours is. We were normal human beings back then. It was just an amusing situation for a comedy movie.

The 1st BTTF is one of the tightest screenplays ever written. BTTF part 2 is the low point, while not a "bad" movie, it's more just a big fan of the first movie, and tries a bit too desperately to recapture the magic of the 1st movie. The 3rd movie is an excellent movie in it's own right, and a great conclusion to the franchise.

1. Cranky principal Strickland/James Tolkan also played the ship's squadron leader in "Top Gun". 2. The teacher that tells Marty, "I'm afraid you're just too darn loud" is Huey Lewis himself. (Heart of rock and roll) 3. Eric Stoltz was first cast as Marty, but he didn't play well with others and was fired. Some of his long shots are still in the movie. 4. The flammable material set on fire with the model exercise had to have been put there on purpose. 5. It's always fun to see how people react to the Marty and his mom car scene. 🤣 6. George McFly/Crispin Glover didn't like that the story ended with the family being prosperous. 7. Twin Pines Mall becomes Lone Pine Mall when Marty takes one out when he goes back to 1955. 8. IMVHO part II is the best of the trifecta. 9. If you want a first time/share of an OUTSTANDING movie where Christopher Lloyd plays the heavy you must do "Who Framed Roger Rabbit".

In 1985 we didn’t literally think that 2015 would look like it did in BTTF2. That movie was intentionally making fun of past failures of futurists to predict the future; it wasn’t trying to accurately predict the future itself.

Hello Me again!😊 The Back to the Future trilogy is very interconnected, and it is best viewed within a short time of each other, to catch everything and get the most from the experience.😉 Michael J Fox was flying back and forth to film this movie and the TV sitcom "Family Ties". Fox is lip synching on the stage. The guys cousin on the phone is Chuck Berry. He was the original singer of the "Johnny B Goode" song. 37:05 - Why does everybody in these reactions always seem to think that Doc saw himself die in the video? If you'll notice, Marty puts the camera down as soon as Doc yells "Run for it, Marty!" Then, when 1955 Doc watches the tape, the video goes to static noise as soon as he yells "Run for it, Marty!" Like, Marty is not standing right there recording the terrorists shooting Doc, that wold be kinda weird and morbid anyways. So no, Doc has no idea that he's going to die in 1985, unless he takes whatever precautions are necessary to prevent that terrible disaster from happening. 🙄😅

The actual Twin (Later Lone) Pine Hills Mall is right across town from my house. Sadly, it's seen better days. We still have the Twin Pine Hills Mall sign on display, but it's lost a letter or two. For any film tourists who find themselves in the Southern California area, it's the La Puente Hills Mall in City of Industry, CA.

This video was recommended to me and since I like BTTF I clicked on it. Will not be watching anymore of her reactions. It isn't really about her being uncomfortable about Lorraine and Marty (Lorraine doesn't know, and Marty is repulsed by her advances), it's more of the fact that she has no knowledge about human behavior. Example: When Lorraine sits next to Marty on the bed, and she asks him what is wrong, Marty replies that he's "fine, fine" while backing away scared...and this reactor is getting annoyed that Marty is saying "fine" like he's alright with it, not even paying attention that his body language saids the complete opposite. And yes, he was going to say "you look so young".

Albeit Fox was trained how to play the guitar by Paul Hanson whom is actually in Marty's band The Pinheads in the first movie! He's the blonde guitar player. Michael J. Fox did sing Johnny B Goode for the movie only. Someone else sang in on the soundtrack album!🤔🧑‍🎤🎸👍

by the way johnny b goode was done by chuck berry in 1958. the cousin he called is the author of the song and known as one of if not the father of rock and roll. marty performed it in 1955.
