Former military spouse here (still married, my partner is just no longer in the military): literally no one cares if your marriage is "legit" or not. You're not required to prove that you're really in love with your spouse and no one would go to prison as a penalty for getting married to someone they didn't love. The reason military personnel get housing allowances is because the junior enlisted do not get paid enough to afford housing. It's not "extra money"- you get it because you need it. (To clarify, that is not taking into account hazard pay for combat which is a thing and was thr situation in the film but generally speaking junior enlisted don't get paid a lot.) Also for us the health insurance wasn't very good- the insurance I had through my job was much better than what the military offered. Of course it's different for everyone (and i am not diabetic) but we had very bad experiences with military health care overall. And the US military hasn't sent troops to Iraq in literal years. Was this movie meant to be set in the early 2000s? (I genuinely don't know) TLDR: This movie is silly.

Exactly my thought. Here they don't care why you're married. Maybe some people about immigrants trying to get citizenships, I'm not sure that's even a thing the bureaucracy is worried about either. But seriously, two US citizens getting married, there is no questions or anything asked about "why" "are you sure?" "Is this just for money?" because no one really cares.

I mean if you have no health care, any health care is good and an upgrade. And sadly, if you are waitstaff and independently employed as a musician on the side, I am sure the military healthcare is golden in your eyes. That being said, I agree they ove embellished the monetary and health care benefits for the sake of the film. But I know plenty of folks in I went to high school with who saw the Military as their best choice, not because they thought they would be rich. But because they knew they would at least have a path to housing and health care as well as other benefits. And in comparison to like working at Target or something, it seemed like a golden goose to an at least decent adult life.

It got good reviews because a lot of privledged people who aren't as directly affected by the ills of society (like being diabetic and unable to afford insulin for example) they want to pretend we live in a magical world where political differences are just twitter fodder that they never have to think too much about or take too seriously lest they be inconvenienced by the very harsh realities of our society. This kind of movie makes it okay for them to act like their political ideologies are just opinions that they have a right to vs real policies and practices that cause ACTUAL HARM TO PEOPLE.

The diabetes and not affording insulin is spot on and no joke, my insurance did the same thing and decided to fuck with my prescription since it says to take between 3-15 units depending on what my blood sugar is at that time but my insurance company only saw the 3 and decided the refill date from that. Needless to say but I didn't have the 630 to pay out of pocket and it took nearly 4 days for my doctor to get things changed and preapproved and I ended up in DKA aka. dying and ended up in the hospital for 5 days. My only solace afterward was knowing my insurance had to pay for a hospital bill that was over 200 times the cost of the initially refused insulin. So yeah, you better believe I'd have no problem banging some Marine dude if it meant not going through that again!

The male lead had no redeeming factors or character growth. There was no reason for the female lead to ignore her core beliefs for a stranger who didn’t even try. If anything the female character was the one that compromised and literally fell in love with a man that doesn’t believe she deserves life saving meds because she’s poor.

She was a huge supporter of the armed forces, frequently donated to Wounded Warrior Project and other charities, volunteered for in her spare time, hugely patriotic. Not so much any more. Had to get an abortion. Fortunately, I talked her into hiring a private investigator (since she refused to go to the authorities), and later on I learned that several of the guys had been killed or disfigured in a fiery auto crash, so at least there is some semblance of justice in the universe.

As a military brat, this movie severely overestimates the Marine Corps give a shit about 'real marriage'. I have seen people get married for less and never have issues. My aunt was the maid of honor for her friend's 'wedding' (justice of the peace four days before her boyfriend of three weeks deployed), she met the best man who asked for her hand by the end of the night with the romantic overture, "I'm moving to Guam on Tuesday, do you want to get married?" No one ever questioned them. Also, the jar-head attitude is spot on- I have heard that "good enough to fight for your ass..." line like a thousand times waiting tables near bases on payday weekend. This movie is complete dogshit, but they did get that right.

I graduated high school in 2001 so I had a *lot* of friends in the military. And a good majority of those friends were deployed. Marriages that were just for the benefits were common across all the branches. Basically the attitude was “why let these benefits just sit there being unused when I have friends in need?” When the serviceman getting married wasn’t deployed, him and his “wife” just lived as roommates. Everyone knew what the deal was and didn’t think much of it and I didn’t know anyone that went to these elaborate lengths to establish a fake relationship. It’s not like they have MPs that sniff out fake relationships and people “StEaLiNg FrOm ThE gOvErMeNt”. No one cares.

I don't really understand why they should go to jail. It was, in a legal sense, a legitimate marriage, right? Papers signed and everything? As long as its legal the motive shouldn't matter. People marry for mercenary reasons all the time, and have done for as long as marriage has existed. It might not be a decent thing to thing to do, but it shouldn't be the governments/military's business if you marry for ~ Twue Wove ~ or just to make a household that benefits both parties. A dishonorable discharge for immoral behavior or something seems more like a punishment to fit the crime in this case

Can’t speak to the case in the film specifically but my step mom is an immigration attorney and the Government is VERY invested in making sure people get married for ~twue wove~ and not just to get citizenship status in that case, though I don’t think you get arrested in that case, the non citizen just gets deported.
@byMidnyt
@byMidnyt Жыл бұрын
there's a difference between a marriage for citizenship (one citizen and one foreigner) and a boot camp marriage (usually both are already citizens). And honestly, if they jailed all the military who didn't have ~twue wove~ marriages, our forces would be significantly depleted. it takes more than just getting married for benefits for the military to care. and yes, loss of rank and up to and including discharge would be a more likely consequence.
@AV-we6wo
@AV-we6wo Жыл бұрын
@@byMidnyt The difference is that a fake 'boot camp marriage' means you get benefits you have no right to, and nobody seems to care despite it being essentially a fraud to get 'tax payers money' everyone is always so concerned about when talking about social welfare or universal health care or anything poor people could benefit from. While a marriage for citizenship doesn't necessarily mean you get government money, actually society as a whole could benefit from the spouse paying taxes etc., and there's still a huge effort to investigate those cases and punish 'offenders'. It seems that the majority of people don't have a problem giving money to the military, even if it's unwarranted, but don't want to give citizenship to foreigners, regardless if they would profit from it or not. I guess that's what 'patriotism' looks like in the US.

As a connoisseur of bad conservative films, it’s amazing to me what these folks *put in their own movies.* They didn’t HAVE to make the lefty lady a diabetic whose choices end up between the Marine or literal death, thanks to conservative health care policies (or lack thereof) but they did. They didn’t HAVE to make the Marine’s debt to a drug dealer, but they did. So now they’re asking me to empathize with the small-minded jingoist hypocrite who won’t even defend his “wife” to his friends, over the woman with a job and drive and goals and no debt to a drug dealer because of a massive fuck up? In fairness, I think it's more of a "moderate" movie, in a "why can't both sides learn to get along?" And it shows exactly why that statement is s dumb. One "side" thinks the other doesn't deserve human rights, and you're asking them to get along. Cassie is the daughter of immigrants with a disability, and Luke supports a party who thinks she doesn't deserve to be in this country or live. "Why can't both sides learn to get along?" is asking one side to compromise but not the other, and that's exactly what happens in the movie.

i've never been one for the enemies to lovers trend, mainly because hardly any story that tries it pulls it off well. i think film is a very poor vehicle for it and it's better suited to longform written works or a tv show. the thing about enemies to lovers is it requires massive character development. when done well it's a slow-burn, a gradual, believable arc from enemies to grudging allies to willing allies to friends, and so on and so forth, before lovers is even in the question. in theory it's really compelling but so many of these enemies to lovers stories neglect the development entirely. one second they hate each other for genuine reasons and then the next they're all over each other, but we never get to see _why_ they like each other now beyond surface level physical attraction. they're enemies because they have ideological differences, and then... they start sleeping together? despite the reason they're enemies never having been resolved? it's so shallow and i can't stand it. it such a waste of a hypothetically good trope.

And this is why I agreed with a saying I saw once: "don't try your hand at enemies-to-lovers unless you're Jane Austen.", not so much saying you gotta be as good as her overall to write, but rather that the trope only works if you develop it in a organic and gradual way to make it feel earned and convincing. As a writer who writes this trope, I absolutely agree. It can take books, literal books to get that turn around. It's easier to make a character end up feeling neutral about the person, but a lot, a crap bunch more to get them to actually feel positively about them, let alone romantically. There are a lot of different ways to do it, but without the buildup it's an absolute wreck. Definitely not a great subject for just a movie or one season show.

That works best as a slowburn with lots of character development to explain how they reach a compromise or how one side gives up their atrocious beliefs.... and B.) I find it more enjoyable when it's grounded in a fantasy setting and not our real-world belief systems. Example: watching a monster and a monster hunter fall in love. Enemies to lovers is usually kind of metaphorical, relying on heightened drama to create something relatable rather than entirely relatable situations, so grounding it TOO MUCH in real-world politics can kill the buzz.

Military spouse here - he gets more pay when deployed. Also adding a spouse you get increased bah or housing allowance, the spouse gets Tricare which whole not perfect is comprehensive healthcare, also those in the dorms are able to move off base. I know for our branch they no longer do those dependent IDs but instead give us chipped cards now. Additionally many don't wait to get married till after deployment because there are programs for spouses to get support at home and I'm the worst case they spouse would get support. Many do court house before deployment and then big wedding after. Also some get married to other military members to just get out of the dorm.

I can’t believe I finally have something that I’m actually an expert in. As a mil spouse who’s had type one (for 30 flirty and fun years), I have notes. First, in the beginning when she stumbles off stage and gives herself insulin. This is bad. If you have, or find anyone who’s like that and diabetic, you need to feed them. Not give them insulin. Feed them. Pour Pepsi in their mouths, or in even crazier situations, rub honey inside of their cheeks/gums. Second, the thing they don’t show is how fucking sweaty you get having a bad low. Like I’ve had the cradled in the arms, gluco gel in the mouth situations. But there’s the added struggle because you are sweating so much, it’s like trying to steady a fish flopping around that’s refusing to drink a juice box. I wish Gagetown was that close to a beach. Do you know how nice a destress frolic in the sea. Just sounds so much better than, like, ATV’s. Would have been better if it had been called Purple Pancreases. The pancreas needs better PR, and we’ve been living off Nick Jonas for far too long. (As a serious’er note, if anyone has any diabetes questions, send them here! I want to do nothing more than educate on an illness that people don’t really know about.)
@paulmaccaroni
@paulmaccaroni Жыл бұрын
Question: in those situations, of sweating profusely and being cradled to get the gel, how long does it usually take to recover? How do you feel physically and mentally after it?
@ellewhite19
@ellewhite19 Жыл бұрын
@@paulmaccaroni It depends on how low the persons blood sugar is. I’m Canadian, so the normal range is usually 5.0-8.0, so people can start being all sweaty and weird as soon as they go below 4. The lower you are, the stranger they will act. It’s kinda like all of a sudden they are really drunk out of nowhere. Recovery depends on how low you get. If it’s a mild low (3.0 and above), usually 20 carbs and 15 min and you are back to normal life. If it’s below 3, it’ll probably take longer. I’ve had lows last for a few hours before, so it’s a bit unpredictable. The hardest part is just having to wait for the glucose to take effect. If I have a bad low, I’ll be absolutely exhausted, grumpy and out of it for the rest of the day. The worst is when they happen overnight, because it makes falling asleep again a little harder. Let me know if you need any more clarification! And thanks for asking!

I honestly don't get the whole ''sham marriage'' premise here, or when it was for the green card in The Proposal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but two consenting adults can get into marriage for ANY REASON they want, right? Why do they have to pretend they are in love to get benefits? Since when it ''love'' a legal pre-requisite of getting into marriage? The only downfall of such arrangement would be the impossibility to marry someone else, even if they fall in love. But again, it's their choice.

Not marrying in the US, but universally green card marriages are definitely scrutinized. And depending on the country it can be treated pretty harsh, with officials being sent to the country just to confirm the reliability of documents. Countries don't want to give away citizenship and make it difficult to go through it. In the country I currently live in (Germany) it can be pretty hard so there's a joke about everyone going to Denmark even to just wed, because they take forever to give marriage licenses to internationality couples. In the US, I know a couple who during their interviews it was revealed he didn't love her and he decided he wanted to just go back home. But the interview process can be very tedious.

The green card one makes sense. My parents had to do that cause my mom wasn’t a us citizen at the time so they had to prove they weren’t getting married just so she could stay after her student visa had expired. I know people who have had green card marriages and had to prove that they knew the other person prior. This military one makes no sense because they are both US citizens and consenting adults. This would never happen in real life.
