Retired anthropologist David Hope took on a very eccentric project in the early 2000s -he designed and co-created a massive house organ.
Its parts include salvaged pipes and recycled cedar fence posts.
There was one problem, once completed its maker was not up to the task of playing it properly.
Now the farmhouse that was built to house the organ has been sold.
But before it is stripped down and put into boxes conductor Michelle Leonard AOM, organist and Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral Thomas Wilson and baritone Andrew O’Connor create a very special performance.
It is the first time David Hope has heard his organ played properly.
Video produced by Catherine Marciniak of ABC North Coast.
Thanks to Meredith Hope for inspiring the performance.
Sound recording and post-production by Jan Muths.
Conductor - Meredith Leonard
Organist - Thomas Wilson
Soloist - Andrew O’Connor

I really hope that this masterpiece of an organ has found a new home.

It was a real joy to make music with my colleagues on this organ - and to have a wonderful two days up in the beautiful Byron Bay hinterland. And to meet David Hope (and family) and hear his story was equally remarkable. Here’s hoping the organ can find a new home and make beautiful music elsewhere!

You tellin' me a chamber organ was built in this house? Holy moley, that is awesome but i would not want anyone to inherit it unless they knew organ. The thought of someone buying the property and destroying this awesomeness just to sell in the future hits hard.

The organ was custom designed for the home it is in. Repurposing the organ would diminish its character and significance. It should stay with the home so that it may continue to inspire, enlighten, and entertain current and future residents. Player attachments are readily available for those who do not have the skill to play manually.

Once upon a time there was a Suzuki motorcycle repair shop in Long Beach California. the owner had a passion for organs and built a giant organ in the back of the repair shop. he had a full audience for Saturday night concerts

I got a 1970 11 stop Reuter in Kansas and I am moving to the Rio grande on the continental divide. Public organs are just that. I can play mine any time of day. I have no interest in classical because that is what the public want. The organ completely re voiced to play edm, disco, metal and jazz. I added a 32' bourdon. I have the only 32' octave in nm. Lowest c is 16hz. I hoarding all kinds of instruments for the apocalypse. I have a completely self sustaining oasis and my biggest fear is boredom. It's called reconfigure to the space available. Already practicing Disco Inferno on the piano the install is this summer! Woo fn hoo

I do not think so. I know little organs in church halls. And even churches have not all acoustics with reverb. This is a typical chamber organ. If you whant only business as usual, then take an electronic (digital) organ. There you get the reverb without the real acoustics of the room.

Oh how sad, his home has been sold, and the organ can not stay with the home. Someone should have done a MIDI upgrade to the instrument so he could have enjoyed it longer.

Thanks Aaron - Have to pipe up (pun intended) to say it was about 37°c that day (and even hotter up in the organ) and we were asked by ABC to remain in civvies despite having brought something more formal! It was a whole day of exploring with all sorts of different sounds and recording several of David’s favourite pieces of music - so not really a ‘concert’ as such. 😊

It's about the music and sound, not the image of the people doing it. Their attire is irrelevant. Clearly you've missed the whole point of this story.
@peteacher52

You are right. Coats, tails, bow ties and sequined gowns make a huge difference to the quality of sound. My Chris Dungey cello doesn't sound its best because I usually play it wearing only budgie smugglers.
