St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney has FOUR pipe organs - and in fact, all four of these are used regularly for different purposes. Join me and Kim on a tour today around the cathedral, and discover the beautiful sounds of the organ.
Organs featured:
2017 Klop chamber organ (1 man, 3 stops)
2000 Létourneau organ (4 man, 46 stops)
1960 Sharp organ (2 man, 26 stops)
1942 Whitehouse organ (2 man, 27 stops)
What I showed in the video were the main features of each organ - to hear more, please look for more performances on Pep Organ. For instance, I didn't show the Letourneau Tuba in this video, but you can listen to it here: • Stanley: Trumpet Volun...

Very interesting display, Titus. When I used to deputise at the cathedral in the 80s ie before the arrival of the Létourneau, the console of the Sharp was in the chancel and was roughly to the left of where the archbishop’s throne is. At that time, the Sharp and Létourneau organs were played simultaneously by two organists wearing two way head phones. I hasten to add that they were played together only for congregational hymns, the responses and the common of the Mass. For the opening hymn, the organist at the Whitehouse would start. The organist would count aloud especially at the end of a phrase ‘hold - 2 - 3 - 4 off 2 - 3 - 4 in!’ During the Mass the organist at the Sharp would lead. The important thing was never to listen to the other organ which was being played lest you fall out of time. It was a great challenge!

@@peporgan you are welcome, Titus. It wasn’t very comfortable. The set up was very primitive: there was an ear piece on the left with a microphone extension below and the right ear was effective blocked to cut out noise!

I love this video. Entertaining and educational. I used to play our church organ back in high school. I'm self-taught so it's very interesting to see different pipe organs in one place and to hear the different sounds they produce. It's quite different from the non-pipe organs. I hope I'll be able to play pipe organ someday.

I really enjoyed this video! I’m not an organist, but I love organ music, and cathedrals! Saint Marys Cathedral is just beautiful! What’s not to like about to Letourneau, Oregon… But my favorite was actually the small one at the beginning! Titus, you should come to America and play the great Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia! Have you heard of this one?

I am from Canada and did not know that we had a company that made these amazing organs. Our church had a new organ installed when I was a boy and in the Choir and the black keys were white and the white keys were black. So amazing and when I think of it I think it was a Canadian-made organ so beautiful. Thank you for your lovely playing and tour.! You are fantastic

Back when I was still doing church music, I had a gig in a church that had four organs......two huge pipe organs in the sanctuary...a small pipe organ in the chapel and a little reed organ in the choir room that I only heard played one time. Back in 2005, Marie Claire Alain herself came to play a recital there. As a singer, I didn't know who she was....until everyone and their brother came from all over to see her play what may have been one of her final performances.

As I play by ear and have been asked to play for family weddings, I played in a church where the note played was delayed by one second so it made it so hard to follow. So every note I played was always one note behind the following note. So not what you would expect. I think there was a delay because they wired it electronically from what I was told and it caused the delay. Have you ever had this experience? Thank you so much you are Awsome I loved them all I can't make up my mind.

Baroque to me usually means, Squawk Box, but I like the breathy sound of the flutes on the Sharp organ. Of course, the size of the room helps. The Letourneau sounds beautiful in that space, too. The Lemmens sounds magnificent. Why do builders include a harmonic flute at only one register--like if there's an 8' harmonic flute, there won't be a 4'; or if there's a 4' harmonic flute, there won't be an 8'?? It must be fun playing that rear organ with that long delay--mind over fingers to keep the tempo. Beautiful photography, too. Thanks for enriching my life.
@peporgan
@peporgan 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I don't know the answer about the flutes, perhaps an organbuilder would know. I've tried playing the rear organ alone- for a slow piece it's possible, but for something fast and rhythmic like Lemmens, you very quickly fall over yourself with all the confusion that you hear!
