The Toronto Raptors have had a terrible start to free agency and as we trickle into day four they have yet to make any new signings for their roster which is in clear need of reinforcement coming off of a dismal 25-win season. The main reason for their struggles to sign new players is the Bruce Brown contract, which had a team option for this season which the Raptors took on shortly before the June 30 opening to deals being made. Why is this contract causing so many issues and what does Masai Ujiri’s front office need to do to turn this offseason around? Jacob Gramegna has the answers today on Amateur Hour Sports.

Let’s be real even if we didn’t have to worry about Brown’s contract, realistically who are the Raptors signing?? You want a backup center, well Drumond, Moe Wagner, and Mo Bamba where the best available realistic options. Then big wing defender wasn’t a large pool of options ether, like Caleb Martin, Miles Bridges and Isaac Okoro were the best “realistic” options but they probably are all resigning with their old teams. You can talking about Brown’s contract making it hard to sign guys but in reality there was just nobody that makes sense to sign or would be willing to sit on the bench for a rebuilding Toronto team.

While I agree it's becasue of Bruce Brown were not making a move, I don't think we were going for a straight up signing. I think there are multiple offers on the table for Bruce, and we're trying to squeeze as much as we can in compensation. There's really no rush right now. If anything, I think it's better, not worse.

Another incentive for Brown to play well this year is of course he's in the final year of his deal and if he wants a big-money multi-year new contract from another team, he's going to have to show them he can play at a high level. Thus, picking up Brown's option might look like a bad move on the surface, but you have to let Masai play things out as he's trying to build a championship-calibre team and he's likely looking 3 years down the road re. trying to achieve it.

We made a trade for a backup pg which we needed and got a good wing shooter which is what we needed. We also drafted four players and have a bench of Mitchell, brown, Walter, Sasha, Boucher, Olynik and mogbo. We have a good bench and made the right small moves that a rebuilding team has to make.

The backup 5 spot, as of now will be a huge problem for Toronto. Not only that, there's a real need for NBA rotation players on this squad. Outside of Scottie, IQ and RJ, JP, and Kelly, the team leaves ALLOT to be desired.

Mogbo is a defensive wing. basketball is not only about shouting 3s, its about putting the ball in the basket Hard work made NBA culture not soft standstill shooters. Some people don't even realize defense is a bigger part of the game most times. Like to see him start at 3 Scottie at 4

Our FO is good on drafts and sometimes on trades however they are not good on total asset management, trade-deadline or FA.

I said finances would be an issue after last year’s trades. We’re in long term trouble. Good enough to be a play-in team, Bad enough to cash in on a top 5 pick.

Raps are unlikely to be playoff contenders this upcoming season, so of course they aren't going over the cap and don't need to sign high-priced free agents. It'll be a season where the young players will get minutes and thus a chance to improve along with vets like Brown providing stability. Raps likely betting that Brown will be healthier and play better this season. If he does, perhaps they can get that first round pick or a promising youngster for Brown at the deadline after all.

I have no complaints. Maybe it means we lose more games next season, but isn’t that what we really want? Get a high draft pick in a good draft. Plus the more playing time the rookies get is better for the future.

I totally disagree , every team salary cap is posted all contracts and when they expire are posted the problem with Trent is he is over paid by a lot, Brown is over paid also

The most important thing for young players is winning. You can get lots of minutes but if you can't win then the players stop playing hard and they get soft off the ball.

Barnes is a 1st option and his 4th quarter performances are easily something masai can build around. Pascal just sat at the corner three every 4th quarter with close to no impact

When will you understand that Toronto is not a place of destination when it comes to landing free-agents, on top of that we pretty much address everything we needed in the draft, we retained Scottie & Quickley and we’re focusing on developing our young talent, so stop complaining

Sign Gary to a two year deal with a team option on Year 2. He is still young and can still contribute in a big way. Hope Masai can find a way to move Brown, but he’s a pricey addition.

GTjr got his prove it contract from the Raptors last year and did not. Brown will be playing hard next year for his NBA contract life. He will have to prove he is not the GTjr category.

Raptors free agent signings over the years have basically been disastrous. None of this year’s free agents were all that interesting. I’m fine with them building through the draft - where overall they have done quite well.

It's obvious we will tank again next season. They won't sign a legit big man because that's how you lose games easy, letting other teams control the paint. Jv would have been a smart pick up if they wanted to win now.

Raptors is doing flipping business, get upside second round pick and trade them for first around, trade the brown for couple of 2nd picks and flipping same thing in 2025
