It goes beyond just being a great actor, he also has a phenomenal memory. He's not lying when he says he's not wearing an earpiece, there's nobody feeding him information; for the most part he's rattling off information he memorised just prior to coming out on stage, either before the show or during the interval, something he had to do literally hundreds of nights in a row for this particular show, a different set of "predictions" every night over the entire run. That's an amazing skill, on top of his other abilities. He really is the greatest showman of our generation, his spin on what is, at the end of the day, very common mentalism techniques is just sublime.

So how could they. Even cameras couldn't catch what's happening right in front of them. Something special about magic. Good magic I believe can stand up too all but the most strongest tests. @@shanescott5847 I'm a layman in magic here, so please be forgiving in your answer :p But isn't the whole point of magic, in general, to depend on the human brains' fallibility and our tendency to find patterns and answers, sometimes even when there aren't any good answers besides "I don't know"? I'd say that pretty much in line with "the audience conning itself".

The opening speech he did was so profound it made me think of my life and how others perceived it and the realisation that really other people really don't care about me and what goes on in my life and likewise I really don't care about there's either. I want good things for them and for them to be happy but really the stuff going on in their lives is pretty much the same as mine maybe with exception of the cancer I'm fighting. I feel different now, I feel that I don't have to wear a metaphorical mask when I'm hanging out with friends or bump into someone I know. I can just be myself because really the person I talk to doesn't really care anyway. With that notion in my mind I feel lighter and free to get on with my life without worrying about what other people think about me.

@@w_szon3115 No. Derren Brown is amazing for a lot of reasons, but he doesn't have supernatural insight. (Or any supernatural abilities that other people don't have) What is special about him is he is extremely creative, more so than most other people alive. And I'm not going to tell you I know how he did that trick. But I can think of possible ways to do it. Almost everything you see Derren Brown do, over 90% of the world's population could do it as well if he were to tell them the exact method and help them practice. There is no form of psychology that would allow you to guess or intuit that somebody got bit by a monkey in Gibralter. I realize he does all kinds of real amazing psychological tricks in a lot of his performances, but that was too spot on. My best guess is that came from some sort of pre-show work, possibly well before the show. But I honestly don't know. Don't have a clue. I'm willing to stretch my belief that he could actually have a crazy memory, and that it was a memory trick (like having people fill out a survey when they buy their ticket), though I doubt it. But I'm not at all willing to believe he can look at a person and intuit that they got bit by a monkey in gibralter, or anything else that specific. He would be able to win James Randi's million dollar prize if he had that ability, and winning that would make anybody so notorious; there is no way Derren Brown would turn that down.

It's not an impressive coincidence. Many people live along many bus routs. Since Derren was going to name 'some' bus rout, a significant proportion of all of the people who lived along whatever bus rout he was going to name would have seen this show. When they saw it they would think wow, what a coincidence! It's a coincidence for 'you' just as it is a coincidence for everyone who wins the lottery each week.

If you don't want the trick spoiled, don't read ahead. ... ... ... Any time a mentalist or a magician asks someone to write something down on a piece of paper or a board, you can be 100% certain they're using a gimmicked pen that looks like an ordinary pen but which transmits everything you write to a remote receiver. There are dozens of them available from all sorts of magic suppliers. From there it should be obvious how a lot of Derren's stage magic works.

He even says so himself. These people haven't read his books. They're soooo desperate for the "body language" and "subliminal suggestions" nonsense to be real. Derren is a fantastic showman, and he's actually a really, really good card magician, but this whole mentalism thing is extremely dishonest. Illusions never used to act like their tricks were real, but now we have Derren pretending to bu using secret psychological skills (which he does NOT possess), we got Blaine pretending to be doing extreme physical feats, we got Chriss Angel and Dynamo using camera tricks, actors, post production effects, etc. I don't like the way it's going. It's not its own skill anymore. It's just acting by another name
@TheDibule

Ash Scott I couldn’t agree more, I wish every one agreed that mentalists = magicians. Period. Even when Derren says he lies blatantly all the time, a lot of people end up believing his subliminal influencing claims. The guy tells us NOT to believe him. Can’t we just enjoy the show, which is great, and all agree at the end that it was fiction?
