Even though Chry Co. had bought AMC in late 86 (because of Renault's financial bills, & cheap made products), there was a design for a new AMC V8 engine that was "Shelved" for about 10 years, & was developed & tested at the old Kenosha plant, that ultimately became the Dodge/Jeep 4.7L OHC V8 (1999-2013).

You forgot to mention the ride quality that these cars delivered. When A.M.C. said in their early TV commercials that they gave the Ambassador the "Red Carpet" ride, they were VERY serious. Even though the cars were ugly as sin, they rode every bit as well as did the Cadillacs and Lincolns of the day. A.M.C. put a lot of money into their suspensions. I know. I have ridden in the 1972 Ambassador and my late sister owned a 1974 Matador.

A+ video! Glad the Ambassador is out driving again! I used to be fascinated by the 4x4 cars AMC used to make. I remember these old commercials and always wanted a AMC 4wd. My wife bought an Alliance new in the mid 80s. The car was a broken down, rusted out junker within 3 years, lol. I also can remember how outdated AMC cars looked when the Taurus came out. They just never could quite get the market share. Sad, because some of their cars were cool! Great trip back down memory lane! Stay safe!

I enjoyed the video a lot. Remembering the 80s when I was a teenager and later in my early 20s I would watch these commercials wishing I could afford a new Eagle or Jeep because of how good they were at everything you could want for transportation. I've owned my 90 Grand Wagoneer since 99 and have a 85 Eagle Limited wagon since 2003. Owned many used Eagles and Jeeps because I couldn't afford new in the 80s. 1st new vehicle was the 95 Wrangler which was like riding a buffalo and I liked every minute of it. Now I have a 2018 Cherokee Overland and 2021 Gladiator High Altitude both bought new and yet I yearn for the past wishing I could have afforded these AMCs when new and still owning them now. I am hoping that is what eternity in Heaven is about.🇺🇸🦅😎🤣

R9 and R11's (Alliances and Encores outside US) were extremely popular in France and Spain as they were built there. Also Jeep Cherokees (and Wranglers) were marketed in Europe through Renault dealers. They even equipped a 2.1 litre Turbodiesel engine from Renault.

Thanks for the post! Was great seeing those old ads. I had a '71 Ambassador wagon white w/ woodgrain. had a 360 V8 w/ 4bbl carb and 4:10 rear. Sold it in'79 to a kid for 600 bucks. It had zero dents and i used to put Murphy's oil soap on the woodgrain to keep it sharp. He had it for 6 months, the car was smashed from stem to stern, one rear window was smashed out, and he had the nerve to tell me the car wasn't worth it.

Wow.....you really brought tears to my eyes here...When I was in high school I knew the automotive new ideas person in Detroit, Mr. Meyers, and I would always talk and tell him about ideas I had for cars.....This was borne from my dad buying a 72 Ambassador Brougham Station Wagon, and they had a 74 Javelin AMX on the showroom floor and I wanted it so bad I was mad I wasn’t grown up.....I graduated high school and my first job was selling AMC cars trying to learn about the car business...I saw Eagle come in, then Renault, then the AMX go on the Spirit chassis-I saw it all.....Then Chrysler bought them and all of my contacts retired from AMC.......but I will always have a place in my heart for the little engine that could-AMC👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿

I have a 73 Ambassador 401, 85 Eagle Limited wagon, and a 90 Grand Wagoneer. All of these I really wanted when I was in my teens and later in the 80s and 90s, but couldn't come close to affording them. Now that I have had these vehicles for many decades I have to say I would be totally happy and comfortable driving them as my daily drivers today. I have a 2018 Jeep Cherokee Overland loaded with all the self driving tech stuff, nav, heated and cooled seats, and lots of safety features that I am spoiled with and yet I still yearn for the beautiful simplicity of driving well made AMCs and Jeeps that were ahead of the times in the 70s 80s 90s. Eagles are great fun on or off road and the only competition was Subaru, which was only half as good as Eagle. I could right a book on all the positives about AMC and Jeeps, but I've rambled on enough. And don't get me started on Rambler.😁😎🤣

Your ambassador seems to be a well kept vehicle, seats look nice. I have been working on cars since the early 80s and I always thought the AMCs were kind of odd machines with pieces from other car makers collected together and combined with their in house parts. These days every car maker collect parts from around the world and assembles a car from them.

One thing you notice in.the jeep commercials in particular was the proud confidence in the jeep name. That inferred confidence repeated over the years has a lot to do with why jeeps still have value and cachet, and market presence all the way to today. They were, and still are proud of their products, and thus by extension the buyer will also achieve that same status and prestige if they also buy a jeep

If AMC’s had the galvanized steel exteriors and were built to last, how come we don’t see more of them today? LOVE AMC!!! (I’m the guy who recently commented on our family ‘72 Ambassador that I used as a teen when mom wasn’t at work or my dad wasn’t pulling a big boat). That Ambassador was white with a navy blue vinyl roof. I kept it waxed and used a clear waxy paste on the vinyl that was made for vinyl roofs. Boy, did that dark blue vinyl shine!!! And bead water!!! Drops as big around as quarters!!! The gold double pinstripe was painted on (factory I assume). I have a million stories about that car, some that would curl your hair ( I used to jump the railroad tracks at Davie Blvd. near Andrews in Fort Lauderdale...get air and land soft as a pillow), but the stories would be boring to most people.

I grew up in the '80s/'90s and always remembered them being called Re-naults back then. There was also a recent Motorweek Retro Review from the '80s where John Davis pronounces it Re-nault. Later in life, watching some European car shows, I heard Re-no and figured that was just the pronunciation over there. So I was surprised to hear these 1980s American advertisements say Re-no also.

When it finished rolling over and landed on its wheels, I was sitting the passenger seat and the roof was crushed down to the window sills on the driver side. Luckily, I wasn't wearing a seat belt.

I rented that exact Eagle wagon (cloth seats) in 1984 for a long 3-day trip around Nevada (the Lake Tahoe/Reno areas, mostly). It was comfortable, drove and handled well, and had plenty of space for our luggage .It wasn't super exciting, but it did the job perfectly. Of course, I made the "Eagle Switch", even though it was summer. It really was was the pioneer of the modern cross-over, pretty neat car.

Great video. A red eagle wagon with the sport appearance package? ( black trim, marchal fogs and alloys) is part of my imaginary nerd car fleet! As a kid we Had a neighbor with an Eagle sedan that I got to ride in a few times. We had a long walk up a dirt road from our bus stop. This was back in the day when a neighbor would stop and say “get in”....and you weren’t afraid to do it. Dad also had 2 XJ’s years ago: ‘84 pioneer 4 cyl. And a ‘90 Laredo 4.0. Great cars.

Pump the gas pedal all the way to the floor 3 times before turning the key. That opens up the carb and allows fuel to get into the combustion chambers right away, which will also make the engines in these older cars start right up.

Thanks for this. I grew up in Brampton, Ontario, Canada which had an AMC plant. My sister drove a white Renault Alliance. Great cars. The Eagle was years ahead of its time and nothing like it came to North America until the Subaru. But the Eagle never had the reliability issues of the Subaru. The good guy lost here. @@KC9UDX Yeah I was thinking they probably had so much on their plate at that point, that it probably wasn't their primary focus anymore. On the other hand I was thinking, especially from a marketing standpoint, the YJ was a bigger evolutionary change than most of the CJ iterations before it, so I'd have thought they'd try to capitalize on that.

Was cruising the used car lots back in 75. Hit the AMC lot and one on the next row caught my eye... twin 2 1/4" tailpipes. It was a 1971 AMC Ambassador 4-door. The salesman knew all about it. He has sold it to the older man that had traded it in. The old man towed a BIG Airstream with it. Police Interceptor 401, super duty suspension (huge anti-sway bars front and REAR), 3.91 posi rearend. Put the biggest tires you could get on it back then... L-70's. That and 36" Blue Walker glasspacs plus additional 24" just before the tailpipes. It was stock quiet... until you really got on it. It would eat a 383 Road Runner or 389 GTO or 396SS or 390 Mustang for breakfast. Man... the look on their face when an "old man" car blew their door off!!! Went in the Air Force in '76 and mom and dad used it as the 'family' car for two year... before it got totaled. Man... what a car. AMC really did have the best cars back then. They just couldn't get over the stigma of being a Rambler :(

The Postal Service phased out Jeeps in 1987. As a former automotive technician for the US Postal Service, I can tell you that is a carrier using his personally owned vehicle with US Mail or Postal Service placards on the doors. The Postal Service does not "use XJ's 30 years later". They didn't use XJ's 30 years ago either. They used DJ's. Other than that technicality, thanks for trudging up wonderful memories from 35 to 40 years ago. I would still be an AMC man today if they were made.

We had two 1970 4 door ambassadors back in the 70’s. They were tanks! My brother was 16 and he would take us for rides or should I say races! 360 v8s and they would burn rubber. In the late 70s My brother than bought a black 1973 AMC javelin AMX “go package” with a 401. That car could burn the tires off in all 4 speeds. Even in the late 70s the Javelin was a HOT car and people would tell my brother how cool it was. I remember as a kid riding with him and he’d stop to pump gas in it and people would come up to look at the car and compliment him on it. I’d love to see Chrysler revitalize the amc name and recreate some of those classics like the javelin in new skin like they did with the challenger.
