I've been reloading for over 40 years. I have learned more in the last few months from you guys than I thought I could. Thank you for your great work and attention to detail. I've graduated to a couple of the more modern cartridges and am saving up now to add the 3rd and that is the 224 Valkyrie.

Going to have to try those bergers myself. My current loads are 23.8g of varget pushing the 88g ELD-M. Got that load from you, thanks. I was using the slower powders to start with, and was having issues with the heavily compressed loads. Another one I’ve had great accuracy with is 25.5g of varget behind the 73g ELD-M. Loaded that bullet to break my new barrel in and it turned out to be very accurate. Love your videos. Informative and entertaining, best of both worlds.

I think the 224 Valkyrie is a better gun than the 22 ark. They're making the 22 arc all that but it's not the 224 Valkyrie is a faster bullet and better than the 22 ark

I watched this video when it first came out. It convinced me to build an AR in 224 Valkyrie. I have had great fun building my 224 Val and I have hit 8"x 8" steel at 600 yards! I am now working on my reloads, I am going to try the berger 80.5 with CFE 223 and see what I can do. I learn a lot from Gavin and still learning. Who says an old warthog like me can't learn more.

thank you for another great video it makes me want to reload more and more , I'm totally happy you stuck with it after so many were just way too fast to dismiss the round . I do love my 224 so far its a gas gun , but it's great . I have only had the chance shot one time so far to shoot at 1000 yards , it was fun . I am hopping to be able to do it again someday soon .

HI, Gavin. Thanks for ANOTHER awesome video. I love every one I watch. And I will add in here that you were VERY instrumental in me making my final decision - after 33 years being faithful to my Redding T-7 Turret (model 25 before that) - in choosing to purchase the Hornady LNL AP over the Dillon 650. What a magnificent choice. Thanks for the two best videos ever to help guide me. I am going to try this Berger bullet for sure. I have the Airborne Arms Herja in 224 V and I am sure you know all the history behind that rifle and the research and the reamers, etc. resulting in what they call their Gen 2 chamber. That thing is outstanding and it can do well under 1 MOA (usually around 1/2 MOA) in any load from a 60 gr. up to the 90 or even 95. YOu asked for a suggestion and as humbly as I can be here, and not having near the experience or expertise you do, I would recommend that you try the 77 gr. Sierra Match King. I have been testing several bullets and to date that one has performed the best for me. With that 77 SMK I am getting .265" groups at 100 yards using 24.0 gr. of Varget and the OAL on those was 2.232. I can't get near that with the CFE223. Though I did get a couple of .335" groups out of 24.5 gr. of TAC. Right now I am testing with 60 gr. Vmax for prairie dogs. So far my two winners are: .500" group with 26.0 gr. Varget and .613" group with 25.0 gr. RL15. I would love to hear your thoughts. But let me add one more question in here. I have been talking with a good friend that I do a lot of business with that is highly recommending that I start testing the new Shooter's World powders, especially the Precision, which is nearly identical to Varget performance, but with the SD and EV spreads at about half of Varget. Have you tested any Shooter's World powders yet? I am not finding a lot of info, though you can email their chief ballistician, Ken Johnson, and he will get right back to you. I have one buddy that just ordered some and has been testing that against his pet .223 load for Varget, and he is getting much better and more consistent groups. If I can use that instead, at half the price, I am all in!! Can't wait to hear your thoughts, Gavin.

I shoot .224 Valkyrie 24” 1/6.5 twist criterion bolt gun. 90 gr SMK /24.5 Varget. I have taken this load out to a mile, although it is not ideal. I would recommend this cartridge for 1000yds and in. I shoot in 15-25mph cross winds in Lubbock, Texas. My .224 Valkyrie drop 600yds is 4 mils/ 900 at 6.9mils/ 1000yds at 8.3 mils/1220yds 12 mils/1415yds is 16.2 mils My 6.5 creedmoor. 600yds is 2.8 mil/900 at 5.9 mils/1000yds at 7.1 mils/1220yds 10.1/ 1415yds is 13.8mils Use .224 for most PRS matches and practice. It’s cheaper to reload. LESS RECOIL TO SPOTS HITS/ MISSES. Most matches don’t have targets past 900yds where I’m at. ITS NOT AS GOOD IN THE WIND AS MY Creedmoor.

I just found your channel. I like what you are doing... I didn't wanna jump into 224 Valkyrie right away, I thought I'd see how it played out. Well, I couldn't stand it, and I'm building an AR in 224 Valkyrie. 24 inch stainless, no taper. Rifle length gas system. I always felt like the thing should really perform with 75-77 grain bullets. Which are also the best ones in my 223 WSSM, so.... I know, I like oddball calibers. I have a problem. Don't judge. Anyways, I haven't commented, but, this video, to me, confirms everything I was thinking all along... 80 grain. Very nice shooting. So, nice job on that... Your videos are really good. I enjoy them. I tell you my experience on long shots that I’ve had with just using the ballistic apps. I have the StrelokPro and I was shooting at a critter at 400 something and using the app I missed several times, enough I had to go to the house to get more shells. Came back critter was still there, but I had my kestrel with the ballistic app and link, let it do its thing and with the first shot using the kestrel I nailed the sucker!!! All with factory 88g loads. Honestly I think you need a kestrel!!!! I’ve made some AMAZING shots with my Valkyrie and kestrel doing the work!! Building the Valkyrie was the best decision I’ve made in this rifle!!!! It was a crappy factory rifle, now a semi custom remage Valkyrie!

Chris Young that’s great that you have consistent atmospheric conditions and that you can do that but where I live we have a saying that “wait 15 minutes the weather will be different”. You still need a weather meter to SEE what your conditions are so you CAN put them in the StrelokPro app, you don’t need a fancy one just something for wind(unless your good at telling what the wind is doing), DA, humidity, station pressure/temperature......I’m glad you can shoot and hit first round hits at a mile but some of us don’t have that kind of equipment, range ect.....

Nice man i just posted a video shooting a can of spray paint at 1136 yards with my new 224 valkyrie ar15 in 4 shots ftom cold bore with factory Hornady 88gn eldms which is the same bullet im loading for it but i needed some brass so im collecting it from the factory ammo. Im really enjoying the caliber. 6mm Creedmoor is my favorite long range precision caliber and the 224 valkyrie is like a miniature 6 Creedmoor. You might want to check out the Applied Ballistics app. Its expensive but i find it to be much more reliable than jbm or strelok pro. I really like your valkyrie series. Its a good source of information

Great Video. I shoot an AR package 20 inch 1-7 twist, with 75 Grain Hornady ELD-M. IMR3031 powder. I have had great performance with this caliber. The only draw back is that my 1-7 twist will not push the heavier bullets. I originally shot cfe223, but I was giving up FPS because of brass punishment. I switched powder and brass and it is a tack driver with some speed to boot. 2800 fps with these 75gr. ELD-M's. Love this Caliber and its accuracy.

I have been battling my 224 Valkyrie in an AR15 platfrom, in the beginning it was only 90 grain Sierra SMKs then notice the 1/7 twist was not that good for the heavier bullets. All groups to this point have been 1.25"-1.5" at best got fed up. I reloaded some 55 grain shot the best group with it just to see if anything better could happen and it did best group by far to this point group measured .85". With some renewed interest went after some 69 grain some 77 grain and even the 90 grain again all pretty much Sierra SMKs and with reloaded with anything from IMR4166, RL15, and IMR8208. One thing that was interesting was the 90 grain Sierra SMKs in front of the IMR4166 was cutting the paper sideways or ripping the target, however 90 grain Sierra SMKs in front of RL15 measured .880" the smallest so far out of this rifle all at 100 yards. Loaded up today with 77 grain and 90 grain again Sierra SMKs but with RL17.

Hey Doug, I run multiple barrel lengths on my ar15 chambered in 224 valkyrie 1-7 twist. I had issues with heavy bullets and have since developed loads using 75 gr. Hornday ELD-M, 80gr. ELD-M and 60gr. Nosler Ballistic tips. Have you tried H4895 or IMR3031? My original load was with CFE223, it was a dirty powder and have since moved to IMR3031 for better velocities. Got great accuracy too. The 75 grainers with 24.0 grains are running@ 2800 fps.out of a 20" barrel. The 80 grainers with 24.4 gr of IMR3031 @2803fps. out of a 22" barrel. Don't give up on the Valkyrie...it might just take a little time to find the right combination. I'm VERY happy with mine. Ringing a 4' swinger @ 1000 yards with consistency....Not too shabby for a 22 caliber. Good luck.

@randalloc 5 жыл бұрын
Glad to see you're nailing that at distance Gavin.. We at the Valkyrie Ascending group on FB do not recommend CFE223 from the past year plus reports... as it's very dirty but more importantly not temp stable and you can see some real pressure issues under hot conditions. Great shooting and my first time nailing stuff with the Valkyrie at 1000 yds was a blast too!

Anyone else using XBR powder? We've been using it for our 5.56 and 308. Not a lot of experience with different rifle powders. We got good results with the XBR and haven't tried another. Currently building a 224. I am using a left hand Gibbz upper, Aero lower, Hiperfire trigger, Superlative adjustable gas block, and I got my barrel from Tactical Kinetics. It's 22" with a 6.5 twist. The lower is already built. The upper arrives today. Then I have to wait for the bolt vise so I can check the headspacing before I put it all together. I can hardly wait.

So I'm on my second Valkyrie, having sold my first with a craddock upper to my army ranger sniper son with the 22" 1/7 twist that using factory ammo (88eldm & 90smk) I couldn't ever get to group well at distance. Got a deal on a Wilson combat reconc tactical with a 20" 6.5 and so far I haven't found a factory ammo that will do well at distance either. 100 yards, 3/4" groups but it seems always at least 1 flyer in a 5 round group. Shooting at 300 yes today and 3" groups with both 90smk and 88eldm and 3" groups with a flyer. I can go to 500yds and hit my metal coyote 3 out of 5 but still not consistent. I've got some factory federal 80.5 Berger ammo arriving next week and hopefully it'll tighten up groups at distance. I'm in ne AZ and can slide out to 1800 yards, but would be happy with 6" groups at 800yds. This video had me give the Valkyrie another go with the Wilson combat. Thanks Gavin. Maybe I'll try handloading one of these days?

Try Hodgon 4895 powder. I shot 1/4 moa with Hornady 80eldm and virgin Starline brass w/ 25g (2850fps), COAL 2.3040". You might get the same results with CFE223, but with a more stable powder. BTW, I was shooting the new bolt action Mossberg MVP 224 Valkyrie. You can check couple of videos on my "gun related" channel (cshooter). I will order some of this Berger 80.5 to compare with the Hornady. Keep up the good shooting.

Have you measures the volume of your cases. I have Federal cases that I prepped - neck turn, primer pockets inside & outfull length sized etc. They run from 34.2 to 34.8 grains of H2o. Some other people say 32 grains is all the get.When I put this in Quickload program I come up with 28.3 Gr of CFE 223 for a pressure of 54779 psi as maximum.Have not tried any loads yet with CFE223.

Cool vid, and impressive accuracy for sure, thanks for sharing. As a novice I have a question so please forgive me, but how feasible is this accuracy with a .223? At the end you say your looking forward to trying an 80.5 in 223. I'm curious to see the results myself. But then I wonder, if the projectile is the same, does this more or less make the 224 a 223 with a lot of powder behind it? -Cheers
@DMHal01
@DMHal01 5 жыл бұрын
MazzifLOL - the 80.5gr fullbore has been used alot in National Match to 600y in a 223 so the answer is yes and no. It would be a single feed proposition because the case overall length would be too long for 223.
