In this episode, we have finished our passage to Panama, having survived the pirates we enjoy some of the best sailing in the world.
In the end of the video we have a catastrophic engine failure and I show you all how to fix and prevent it. This is independent of sail/shaft drive transmission, unique to Volvo Penta. This is a known issue with Volvo Penta engines.....disturbingly.
Please note the flickering of my screen recording is because my computer is prehistoric and the hamsters turning the wheels inside are getting old, have mercy on them and us.

Hi James and Eva, thanks for the great video. Very nifty effects on that one too! You are having a real adventure, brave man and woman away from the most common routes and places. You take your chances but you get your well deserved rewards. I wish you the best of luck. One little question, since Navionics is wrong and the paper charts from Open CPN often off by quite a bit (with the GPS) even if they are very accurate locally, what do you use? How do you do it? What about google and the programs like Ovital and such? Cheers!!

Every single chart you can get your hands on, take it. This region is covered well by the bauhaus panama cruising guide. If you use opencpn you can buy the charts from the o-shop. futhermore paper charts are always a reliable fall back. Sat images are great but use your eyes first. Use the midday sun to help you also. You can see the shallows and the turbulent water over them.

Good tip on the CPU and advisable to get a circuit wiring diagram of it from Volvo so that you can bypass all it’s functions if you have to, should be a simple unit and it would be interesting to open up and learn to fix with components that are really cheap and good knowledge to have. Thanks for another great video.

Ha! We used to start our old 66' Chevy Laurentian the same way - but with a big 'ol flat-head with a thick plastic handle for a measure of insulation - sparks would fly - but I could lean waaay back - not cramed in with the monster like you seem to be! I can only imagine how hard that would be to work on in a lesser engine room than yours! Well done McGyver!

Great video. I'm flaggin some of these recommendations and warnings on my Google Maps. Someday. I've been along the Mexican Riviera -- on cruise ships with my in-laws. (I won't call that sailing). Until this video I just figured it was straight sailing between San Diego (Maybe La Paz) and Panama. And the engine tip if needed? Amazing. Pantaneus Insurance should send you a check for a percentage of the money you've just saved them. At some point you might want to index these videos and sell them on USB drives. So often the most interesting places are full of interesting spots but there's no cell service.

The indexing is a great idea, thank you. I guess I should probably do an instructional video series sometime and sell that. I just want to help people at the moment and record my findings as I go. I definitely saved one insurance claim, MY OWN!

Thanks for your comments folks. Yes It is rather disturbing and disappointing for all kit in general. Remember I've decked the boat out as an exploration cruiser in luxury. Worth a stab at it I thought. But excluding the aircon it hasn't been the luxury kit that has failed me. Makes you think. I want to let everyone know my real experience, so someone doesn't get hurt.

Great video again! In a future video, would love to hear about Neel 51 comfort at anchor compared to similar size catamaran… especially magnitude and character of the motion? I have heard mixed comments, but never anything directly from a Neel owner. Thanks for considering!

Wow James, Eva, what a story, just curious about your time line, as it seems that you jump around a bit what is your sail time/length, how long do you typically stay at anchor, and last but not least, how the h-e-double hockey sticks do you find all these VERY interesting places???

Hi casey! Hope you're getting some track time in. We find them by exploring the chart first and looking for cover mostly. As long as the weather permits we usually stay no longer than 3-5 days in the same place. Unless we love it. Even paradise needs some change sometimes too

Love your perspectives on the Neel 51 and sailing in general. Why do you think Neel is the only company building this format of trimarans? Seems to me like this full-deck trimaran concept is ripe for innovation.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 жыл бұрын
Seth, thanks for your kind comment. You know, that is the best question I have been asked and I can answer it well, hopefully. I think it has to do with change. The amount of times I get asked about sea keeping and comfort or quality is quite tiresome but warranted as it is different. People are still getting their heads around catamarans mostly. It truly is the best of both worlds for a sailing limousine. The space is unparalleled. I would not be surprised to see an aluminium, centre board replicant in the near future. Aluminium because it is cheaper to build custom. Perhaps I should do a video on this..... Thanks again for you comment.
@sethc3333
@sethc3333 2 жыл бұрын
@@carryonsailing I think aluminum breaks even in some of those downsides I mentioned once the boat size increases past a certain point. Would love to hear more of your opinion on the custom route, aluminum vs fiberglass. Yes I had recognized the ease of modifying an aluminum yacht by welding it. But I had still considered it to be an overall more expensive process. Then again, if I was planning on icy passages and remote exploration, a Garcia built center boarder Neel 51 replicant would be my boat of choice.
@carryonsailing
@carryonsailing 2 жыл бұрын
Smart choice Seth, Look towards KM yacht builders too. I admire almost all that they do. However, bang for buck the Neel 51 still has it for 90% of what most of us actually need.
