In this episode we go into the detail necessary to create a reliable, robust navigational system onboard. You MUST be self reliant to be offshore in our view.
Our setup doesn't appear convenient at first, however the further you sail, it will be for reasons explained in the video.
We replaced the radar dome as the 4g unit failed also. Since writing the VHF has also failed from BandG along with our GPS sensor. So you get the picture here folks......
We write from safety now in Costa Rica and next episode we will explore the dangers and the solutions we had on the navigation to Costa Rica.
For those interested to replicate this setup:
Linksys 5g router,
Navico Halo 20 (resentfully purchased).
Cat 5 crimper and cables to make new rj45 connection.
Opencpn software opencpn.org/
You must install the radar Pi plugin as part of the opencpn plugins section and connect your computer to the new 5g network you created over wifi. Put the radar cable into the router. Also, you will need a fairly decent cpu or GPU in your laptop or desktop to run the radar over wifi. My raspberry pi 4 didn´t cut it.
actisense usb multiplexer actisense.com/products/ngt-1-...
for max detail, go here.
github-wiki-see.page/m/opencp...
If I were to do it all again, I would get this www.vespermarine.com/cortex
Never give up, keep the sails up, keel down and Carry on!

I went openplotter, daisy hat + RPi, a cheap Chinese touchscreen and a seayak Seatalk1 - USB to get the instrument data into the Pi - x2. Easily 1/10th of the cost of any big brand marine electronics setup, and since I installed it and set it up, I know exactly how to repair or replace any of it.

Nice video. I use OpenMarine (openplotter) running on a Raspberry Pi4 as a server. Very low power consumtion. Opencpn is a part of this boat server. I also use Pypilot (autopilot) with integration to Opencpn. Chart with usb-dongle from O-Charts, can use same chart on my backup Raspberry Pi4. Using my tablet/phone on helm with VNC screen. Swr is more for transmitting than receiving an rf signal. Bad coax will give crap reception as well as poor transmission efficiency . Swr is used to tune your coax and antenna for best performance for the band you will be using.

@TheConstitutionalGuardian 3 ай бұрын
When the VSWR is high, it indicates poor impedance matching between the transmission line and the load, a mismatch on transmit will also be a mismatch on receive. if a 3:1 match is made, it is a 3:1 match both on receive and transmit.

I wonder if anyone can offer me some advice? I am completing a 40ft catamaran (sadly the original builder died five years ago) so there is no navigational equipment fitted yet (there isn't a helm yet, but that's another story). I'm completing the boat as a solar powered catamaran (there is no mast) and it will feature four EPropulsion Navy 6 out board engines, two per hull. I may also fit two 30HP petrol engines to the transom behind the dinghy davits that could be lowered if needed as the builder fitted 250L petrol tanks per hull. There are no through hulls on the hulls at the moment and I'd like to keep it that way if possible. I've watched some of the Open CPN videos and it seems like the way to go. The EpPropulsion outboards will give some data such as speed, power usage etc. Am I right in thinking I could use sensors such depth, wind etc, maybe safety things like fuel vapour sensors, bilge alarms and link these up to a control unit (multiplexer) that then sends all the dat via USB or wirelessly to Open CPN? I think I'll probably invest in Starlink for internet access, so would that be able to give me better weather data and could that be overlaid in Open CPN? If anyone knows of any videos that show a new install or similar that would also be great. Happy sailing.
@carryonsailing

Hi there, my advice is to stay away from Nmea stuff completely and go for NKE then use an actisense muktiplexer to covert top line data to nmea for opencpn to use. Bit long winded but more robust. Using an nmea backbone with likely just cause you problems. Especially the bugger the network gets.

James, I see you're getting radar, wind and navigation. How will you work the autopilot without the B&G (can you do that through the PC as well)? I know many (like myself) also have Navionics loaded on their phone/tablet and have a Ram mount at the helm. That is another option I believe. Lastly, have you seen the new Apple Mac Studio ? I'm thinking get one fo those, remove the B&G plotter, put a monitor there and run everything to all locations from the PC. Put touchscreen monitors at the helm and saloon workstation. Not sure, did you mention why you replaced the radar?. Thanks again sir, I will be returning from the Middle East this year and going to the Annapolis Boat Show to look at the Neel 47. Douglas, the autopilot is working ok when the gps works, otherwise not. I have a back up on the note pad with opencpn and navionics. The only thing I would say about a full blown pc, keep it low power consumption and also a APU or battery is a good idea if you have a power failure or switch. Thus an old laptop does the job. I have noticed on Eva's macbook pro that the M1 chip cannot run the radar plugin necessary to run the radar on my set up. I have a fanless MeLe computer that will do the job for you. I have tested it and it works great with the radar. Here you go www.mele.cn/PCHD28/ Also you do not need touchscreens at the helm Use a robust phone or notepad and VPN over wifi. I use an ulefone armor 9e Opencpn can run autopilot, I have not tried yet. plugin is called pi_pilot.

More gadgets equal more problems, I did all my sailing with gps, charts, and a Plath sextant. A boat next to me in Costa Rica lost most all the electronics by a lightning bolt.

Interestingly, my new setup is more resistant to lightening strikes, the router means there are no direct cable to displays and the Radar is the most likely thing to get cooked.

@@carryonsailing sounds good, but don’t forget the power supply might get zapped cause the lightning introduces high voltage spikes in the ground system which has a common ground to all systems..hand held gps is protected and the sextant, well you know. Buena suerte

Yes thanks Don, Very intelligent point. I have a totally separate mobile battery pack and solar array to keep me going. The Raspberry PI4 is also extremely low power consumption. That is set up and currently disconnected sitting in a drawer. Ill go into this soon. J

@@carryonsailing looks like you covered things pretty much. During my stay of three months in Costa Rica another strike hit some local fishermen in a wooden dugout and killed them. Another strike hit a palapa build home on a hilltop which had a lightning pole on the roof top that was grounded to the rebar of the concrete floor, fire burned down the home and cracked the flooring. Over 120 inches of rain that season and lightning kept the night lighted almost the entire nights. Beautiful country, don’t miss it.

Just installed OpenCPN recently, and downloaded a bunch of charts, but it seems to be crashing as I zoom in and out, maybe some bad charts. I honestly believe you have a fault in your wiring somewhere that is killing your B&G equipment. Lots of people have this stuff and I've heard good things, and for so many devices to fail so quickly, is a statistical anomaly. So what do they have in common? Would be good if you could somehow monitor your electrical system-- DC voltage, but also check to see if you are getting AC leakage, maybe when running a particular configuration (Eg Generator, or on shore power) there could be leakage or induced high voltage current. Induction is no joke and high voltage at even tiny currents can be bad (and then if that's what's happening the B&G power supplies aren't protected against it.). MEanwhile the laptop which uses an AC Power supply is not affected... that's just a hypothesis. Appreciate your videos, especially the technical details.

The crashing could be a plugin or check your opengl settings. If you downloaded a cm93 that can be unstable too

I think 9/10 it's the voltage coming in to that deck causing problems and doesn't have anything to do with B&G. Their 4G domes are a different story. People always putting in fuses and don't consider undervoltage scenarios as much. Also you're not required to buy the biggest display your bank account can support. They get a lot of guys like that, similar to big trucks or not being satisfied with the standard 7" one well I want the 12" one. You can still get the job done with the 7" one I promise and you can buy like 6 of them for the price of one 12" if you're having power issues. OPENCPN can be pretty buggy and if you fish yeah those charts suck. What actually makes a difference is the 3D sonar and forward scans for going into under plotted areas and signal K sucks. As you mentioned you don't really need a chartplotter to sail anyways so you can plot a course without Navionics as well. QTVLM is a lot better I think because it's more stable for useful purposes like weather routing but maybe if you read this far then you already know about it 😅

@@carryonsailing Were they all equiped with the same displays? Generator ? Some other component governing the frequencies? Has anyone tried wiring a display with a seperate feed and earth.. from the rest of the loom and test it with the different systems connected. Its a pain and expensive but hopefully if your not alone its not a unique cause. 🤞🏼 Keep trying ideas.. just wish i could be a bit more helpful. 🤷🏻‍♂️
