The 2nd one you showed (Jen Williams) was the one that really spoke to me. That lacy wall-like feature of wood was just stunning. Thanks for sharing! I always appreciate you putting together these scaping tours for those of us that can’t make Aquashella!

That mixed rock aquarium is my favorite! The way the different rocks were made to look like they had been together for years is incredible. I live in Florida and wanted to go but I forgot about it till it was too late. Seeing the videos I missed a lot of cool stuff. I have been keeping fish for decades but I’m not very artistic so seeing other people’s work is awesome.

My favorite is Joanna’s aquascape. I love the simplicity of it and it doesn’t overshadow the fish, which is my preference.

Just got back into fishkeeping for the first time since I was a kid (about 7 years ago. Used to have 15 tanks, bred fish too). Felt completely lost with all of the new technology and developments that have happened in the short time I was away. Thanks to you and your videos, I feel super confident and I am excited to get back into the hobby!

Many beautiful tanks! I'm not a fan of the "miniatures with a dead tree sticking out" look and I hope it doesn't become a trend, but that is the only one I didn't think was absolutely stunning. While I recognize that an aquascape is an idealization of reality, I at least want something plausible with all natural elements. I moved past gimmicks on my first tank when I was 12 and just had to have a treasure chest bubbler with a lid that moved up and down. I got tired of that quickly! But different strokes. The fish looked healthy and if gimmicks help the hobby, good on them. I am intrigued by dragon stone and African cichlids and hope to see more of that. No, dragon stone doesn't occur in Lake Malawi, but those fish do live in rock reefs, so I'm OK with that artistic liberty - so long as it doesn't feature a coffin and a skeleton bubbler and it gives the fish a habitat in which they can thrive.

Liked the aesthetics of Jen Williams and the overall look of Joanna 's. For too many scapers,the fish are an afterthought. Threadfin rainbows really made her tank. Emphatically didn't like the mixed rock mbuna tank .Rocks aren't laid down like that in nature & even some moss &hornwort would have added a welcome touch of greenery. Or he could have cultured algae on rocks ahead of time. Thanks for your efforts in putting this out on YT. I'll never attend an an Aquashella but I like some of the stuff Glorified trade shows to me. ..

Loved your tank and i wonder what other wood could have a similar look and a better feel in water. I once tried a wine root. Was beautiful but unmanageable in my tank. I tried to wait but it took forever and still looked bad.

Disagree about the Mbuna trendsetter, while it looked ok, it just triggered my BS meter. Not stones that go together. I think Jason is a better scaper than he wishes to admit and Johanna just nailed her scape. Thanks for sharing these awesome aquariums.

That one at 3:45 is what I want to do for my next project: a 55 gallon lava, slate & green carpet/moss scape with lava-themed fish to pop with color (as they'll be matching some of the rusty slate).

tank 3 was the best. I can't get my head around rock only scapes, I feel like it's a niche I can't accept as aquascaped without plants, it's the reason I won't get certain fish like african cichlids. Glass clear water- filter floss! tho I'd wager at an event and time sensitive, a bottle of water clarifier surely went in when they look so clear in a fresh set up.

It's funny - I spent years and years in rivers as a fish biologist doing lots of snorkeling and our rivers on the west coast of the USA have almost zero rooted aquatic plants. In rivers where the flows get really high on a seasonal basis, all the substrate is mobilized, so all plants would be scoured out. You see large wood and rocks and substrate, but no plants like you see in planted aquariums.
@gouldschick101
@gouldschick101 8 ай бұрын
@@scrubjay93 one demographic for fast moving streams is what you describe. And how many people are keeping USA style biotopes? Ya this is a narrow comment at best. it is however accurate that most aqauatic plants growing wild are emersed or at least so part of the year, it's also the case that many water basins shrink to nearly nothing but mud certain times of year and that others are stagnant water too but we don't mimick that do we. Are we supposed to list our qualifications on things to make a post, I wasn't aware that was required to have an opinion that was valid but in that case. Certified horticuluralist and Vet tech for decades. I will continue to prefer planted tanks despite you being a biologist, thanks.

The more complicated your aquarium is, the harder and more time consuming it is to clean it. Keep it simple. Fish like more room to swim around.

I actually don't like the mixed-rock mbuna tank at all. In nature, you don't normally see rocks of completely different origin and composition in the same place. It also detracts from the color and beauty of the fish to me and they were way too large for the tank. Different yes. My fave is the one with the large rock above the surface with moss and little waterfall. The diorama with the house was too busy for me - fun but not beautiful or practical.

Agree. The rock formation was extremely off to me. The first two, the one immediately after, Jen Williams’ 2nd aquascape, as well as Nikolai’s were better in my opinion.
