This was at PIA Arena in Yokohama on April 2nd 2023. I was at this show, so I was in the crowd shouting "Death! Death! Death!" (or "Desu! Desu! Desu!") and jumping up and down like a maniac. Going to a Babymetal show is pretty exhausting because you are jumping and chanting and doing the actions and running around in the pit, but it's such fun. There is nothing else quite like a Babymetal show. Babymetal Death is the show opener for the vast majority of Babymetal shows. It serves as an introduction, spelling out the name of the band "B-A-B-Y-M-E-T-A-L!" and the girls names "Su-metal desu" (I am Su-metal), "Moametal desu" (I am Moametal), "Momometal desu" (I am Momometal). There is actually a play on words going on here because the words "desu" means "I am/we are" in this context, but it sounds a lot like "death", so they are both introducing themselves and saying death, which is pretty metal. This was actually Momometal's first show as a full member of Babymetal, so it was her first time getting to say "Momometal desu" which is why the crowd cheered so hard when she said it the first time. It was also the first time they had performed this version of Babymetal Death since 2017, because they didn't perform it at all during the period from when Yui stopped performing until this particular show due to there only being two members in the group and song didn't work without three. They did use an alternate version called the "Shin Version" on a couple of occasions between 2019 and 2023

An absolute banger, even more so if you remember that this is the first song on their FIRST (2014) album! Yes, their Japanese audiences are god level! And you should definetly do the special Su-Metal birthday party version of the "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" concert one day. You´ll be blown away by it!

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I present you with BABYMETAL Death.😉 OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity: Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase. Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I AM SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL. The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show. 🦊 🦊 🦊 🖖 ❤

Great reaction.🦊🤘This video was released 3 or 4 months ago to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their first album being released - 'BABYMETAL Death' was the first song on that first album. They had not played it live since 2017 because it is an intro song and they are introducing themselves by name, but they couldn't use it with just two official members and the original third member Yuimetal didn't appear at all after October 2017 and officially announced she was leaving the band in October 2018. This performance was on 2nd April 2023 - the first concert with Momometal as an official member, so 'BABYMETAL Death' was back ... I don't know if you heard the crowd cheer particularly loudly when she introduced herself as "Momometal desu". The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp. Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Moametal", "I am Momometal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death". You may want to see the 'Legend 1997' performance where they were celebrating Su-metal's 16th birthday in December 2013. That one was a really special performance. Being an introduction song they would normally play it right at the start of the concerts (it is a great way to get the crowd hyped and joining in straight away), but that was one of the special occasions where they played it later in the show - for that one it was the finale.🤘

Great reaction, thanks! Long story short: this used to be their usual show opener until 2017. Then, they continued as a duo so, performing a song where they introduce themselves was pointless. They recovered the song right here at BABYMETAL Begins Clear Night show at PIA Arena in April 2023, after adding Momoko as a full fledged member in the end of the previous night. You can clearly hear the crowd roaring every time she introduced herself. And it's epic because they were worried and anxious about the crowd's response to the announcement. We are so proud of Momoko right now...

This used to be quite a disturbing track/performance. When you remember that it was on their first album so you had thousands of fans chanting death death death at 3 mid/early teens girls during live shows. As Jake says the very early live versions are quite shocking. Not a cult honest.

Hell yeah! “Desu”= “I am / We are”. Babymetal Desu = We are Babymetal. Say it with a lisp and you have “Babymetal Death”, a cute but metal AF way to introduce yourself. Staple show opener since inception, but they stopped playing this song after Yui left in 2018. Momo was made official 3rd member at the end of Babymetal Begins - Day 1 - Black Night (Apr 2023). This show was Day - 2 - Clear Night, and the first time this song returned after 5 years, and now with a “Momometal Death!!” That’s why the crowd lost their shit lol. 🤘🦊

This song is their way to introduce themselves at the beginning (usually) of the concert. The word "desu," is pronounced "dess," but can easily be mistaken for the English word "death," so they made kind of a joke about it, and even incorporated it into the overall background lore for BABYMETAL, which held that Su-metal (and sometimes the other girls as well) was to be sacrified so that she could re-emerge as a metal goddess, the Chosen of the Fox God, to spread the message of metal throughout the world. If you watch the Legend 1997 (so-named because it was Su's 16th birthday, and she was born in 1997) version of this, that story is told through the performance, and one of the few instances where this was the last song performed rather than the first.
