Richard Atkinson discusses the counterpoint in J. S. Bach's BWV 635 chorale prelude for organ, "Dies Sind die Heil'gen Zehn Gebot." This is a fair use educational commentary that uses a recording/performance by Wolfgang Zerer.

@@Richard.Atkinson I honestly wouldn't mind having some of these shorter ones in between the longer videos (but if it was one or the other, I would absolutely vote for the longer videos even though they likely would do worse with the algorithm). It's kinda nice to have an opportunity to quickly just hear a simple example that's easy to follow. I think it probably helps make it easier to hear the things discussed in your longer videos as well. I appreciate everything you do! Your videos are extremely educational and super helpful trying to learn more about how composers use counterpoint in practice.

Thanks a lot for all the work you must put into those videos! Everytime I see a notification from you channel, I rush to my computer to watch it. I particularly loved your Brahms 1st symphony, although I'm missing the longer videos on Strauss and Wagner (and others). You're very interesting when you talk about counterpoint and harmony, and I watch all your uploads on these topics assiduously, but somehow I find you even more fascinating when discussing works on a larger scale, examining leitmotivs, looking for hidden meanings in the notes... That must be why I love your videos on late romanticism so much. I guess Brahms sits in between the two "extremes". I appreciate that you already have at least one big project on your hands at the moment, and that those "deep dive" videos must take an enormous amount of time to make, but if you ever find yourself wondering what to do next, you might think of this comment!

Richard, Great video as always. Have you ever wondered how Bach managed to fit these themes in contrapuntal form so that they fit so well together, using ryhtmicallty altered and inversions of the original theme? How did he plan all that ahead? I wish we could know his compositional process... or was it simply divine inspiration? 😀 You are too humble: what you refer to as "annoying interruptions" are the best part of your videos. By the way, your German pronunciation is excellent! (I speak German).

Great video and splendid counterpoint. Bach never fails to amaze me. I'm not terribly fond of making requests, but I was wondering whether you'd be interested in sometime covering some of Leopold Godowsky's works and transcriptions (like his studies after the Chopin etudes, his passacaglia and fugue modelled after Schubert's incomplete symphony, or his prelude and fugue for the left hand alone modelled after the BACH theme)? There's plenty of delicious counterpart in many of his transcriptions, and I think he would be a good fit for this channel considering his mastery at counterpoint.

I have a personal request, as I have never seen anyone else request the same (sadly...) - will you ever analyse any of Jan Dismas Zelenka's many masterpieces..? He is considered the Czech Bach for very good reason, and ever since I discovered him mere months ago, I have compiled a playlist of over (as of now) 40 score-videos and have a great many more to create... this composer has so many unique and bizarre fugal subjects, chromatic harmonies and rapid modulations, combined with rarely heard technical brilliances such as his obsession with quadruple stops and very daring deceptive cadences... I think you would be the perfect person to help give the man his deserving reputation that he never got in life - forgotten as Bach was. Here is that playlist also, if you want to hear new works / study / refresh your memory on any works that you may have heard before: kzfaq.info/sun/PLafpqg3vsKmeqZ960zC8TcjT1x4-I-zM7 P.S: My favourite work of his is without any doubt the Missa "Gratias agimus tibi" setting, which I am in the process of creating a very high quality urtext edition score of for study purposes, as well as for performers... I released a excerpt of the opening Kyrie movement which is in the above playlist as a reference to the quality of my work.

This piece always gets me into a modal discussion. Is the final cadence a half cadence in the key of C, ending on a V chord, or a tonic cadence in mixolydian, ending on a I chord? Bach of course is mostly a tonal composer, but he does seem to treat specific chorales in their original modes. (It would be fascinating to compile which ones keep the original modes and which ones have been adapted to modern tonality). I believe the other chorale on this theme also takes advantage of the flat 7 a lot in its harmonies, the F natural here, and ends on an equally ambiguous cadence. The whole tonal center seems to be around G, he uses the leading tone F# to establish certain semi cadences, but immediately goes back to the F natural to indicate he hasn't really modulated to a new key, a sort of quasi modal-tonal hybrid. These types of pieces fascinate me. There's a telemann fugue I'm studying that appears to be in the key of C, but is actually in mixolydian, it modulates backwards on the circle of fifths (G mix, C mix, F mix), and appears to end in a V-I-V cadence, but is actually a plagal cadence in I-IV-I. I believe the cadence here is plagal as well, ending iv-I, with a borrowed minor iv chord, perhaps so the listener would not confuse it as I-V in c major. (That telemann piece is fugue no 6 from the 20 little fugues if anybody is curious)
@SpaghettiToaster
@SpaghettiToaster 3 жыл бұрын
Bach actually ends a lot of chorales on the dominant. I've never found an explanation why, but I assume it must have been in style at the time, since as far as I know nobody ever seemed to mind or even take note of it. I'm not sure if your modal explanation is applicable to all of them though. I'd be interested to hear if anyone with more scholarly knowledge in baroque styles knows if this was "a thing" or if it was just Bach, and in either case, what the reason for it might be.
@sameash3153
@sameash3153 2 жыл бұрын
@@SpaghettiToaster What we call the half cadence today was originally a plagal cadence, in either the Mixolydian mode (in pieces we perceive as major) or Phrygian mode (in pieces we perceive as minor). Eventually these modes all coalesced into the major-minor tonality system we know today, but we still observe their relics in cadences, after all, there is a subtype of half cadence called the "phrygian cadence" (ii6-V). I know it sounds like I'm just pulling that out of my butt, though I promise I have read research on this, and this is much more common in earlier periods where the modes were still alive. In the case of Telemann, who I mentioned in my OP, he explicitly had a period where he was experimenting with the modes, that coincided with the publication of Gradus ad Parnassum which helped revitalize interest in them (Telemann at one point prepared a German version of the text, though it is lost today.) In the case of Bach, he sometimes rendered chorale melodies in their original modes. This chorale tune is originally in Mixolydian. Other melodies he treated in their original modes off the top of my head are Christus der uns selig macht (phrygian) and O wir armen Sünder (mixolydian). However, he did not always do this. Sometimes, he arranged phrygian melodies in modern major, like one of his settings of Herrzlich tut mich verlangen, where he treats the melody beginning on mi as a major third of a tonic chord. He also has set that in minor as well. In major settings, the mi is the major third of a tonic chord in the final cadence, a perfect cadence , in minor settings the mi is the root of a V chord, which corresponds to a plagal cadence in the phrygian mode. When you approach half cadences from a modal perspective, they make much more sense, they sound less incomplete when you have the plagal motion in your ear. And they often serve tonal purposes as well, like helping the following movement sound more firm when it begins on the tonic chord, as is the case here. But because this melody is originally a mixolydian melody, I firmly believe it is a modal treatment. His fugue on the same melody (BWV 679) is even more explicitly modal, where it includes a flat seventh as part of its subject, and when it modulates to the fifth above, where you would expect a C# in the key of D, he consistently uses a C natural.

Eh, not really. Bach intended it as an "introduction" to the art of organ choral preludes, as well as a series of studies for pedal beginners, so if we're talking difficulty level the Orgelbüchlein could be compared to, say, the English Suites for a pianist.
