Sweden's contribution to glam/hair metal. Though most know Europe for "The Final Countdown", THIS was actually their highest charting hit. If you go further down this road, you might also check out "Rock the Night" and "Superstitious" (no, NOT a cover of the Stevie Wonder song). Europe today consists of the classic 1984-86 lineup that played on 1986's "The final countdown" album that this song, "Carrie", is from. Yes, 2nd this. Norum is a beast. He has some solo material and also a member of Don Dokken’s band initially. I did like Kee Marcello’s playing as well, who replaced John in Europe. I just didn’t like the songs as well overall, but Kee was a very fluid lead player. Norum had that aggressive attack which is what made him a great choice for Don Dokken, knowing he was going to be compared to George Lynch.

My recommendation is their third most successful single "Rock The Night" (1986).. The song was released in two different versions, in 1985 as a single from the soundtrack to the Swedish film and in 1986 as the second international single from the album The Final Countdown. The original 1985 release has a rawer metallic hard rock sound than the more polished 1986 from The Final Countdown. The second version reached the top 10 in the charts. Other big hits are "Superstitious" and "Cherokee".

"Rock the night" by Europe is another big single from this 1986 album 'The Final Countdown'... It was 3x platinum hit in the US w/ 4 singles - "Carrie' ... 'Cherokee'... and the title track being the other 3, making Europe 80's rock stars. Joey Tempest (real name: Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) is still the singer & songwriter of Europe. They did break up in 1992... but reformed in 2004 til today, but their later records have not had the same commercial success. Joey Tempest formed the band as a teen in 1979 as Force... changed their name to Europe in 1982 and released 2 albums in Sweden - 'Europe' (1983) and 'Wings of tomorrow' (1984) w/ John Norum (guitar), John Leven (bass) and Tony Reno (drums)... When Europe was signed internationally in 1986, Ian Haugland (drums) and Mic Michaeli (keyboards) were added to the line-up for 'The Final Countdown' album in 1986... However, John Norum was frustrated by the commercial sound of the record and quit... Kee Marcello (guitar) joined and did the tour, and their success got the first 2 albums released internationally as well. Europe wanted a different sound for the next album 'Out of this world' (1988), but fans wanted a 'Final Countdown Part 2' ... and that didn't happen, despite selling platinum... Singles like 'Superstitious' ... 'Sign of the times' ... and the ballad 'Open your heart' (which was originally recorded on 'Wings of tomorrow') did not have the same impact as Europe was tied to the 80's arena rock of bands like Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Whitesnake, Warrant, etc. They took a break and tried again in 1991 w/ the album 'Prisoners in paradise'... but Nirvana and Pearl Jam were already changing the scene, and Europe was left w/ no promotion. Europe decided to call it a day in 1992 after a dismal tour. Joey Tempest did release some solo records in the 90's. In 2004, the classic Europe (Tempest, Norum, Leven, Haugland and Michaeli) reunited & released the album 'Start from the dark'... and returned to touring. They claimed that the 80's were 'horrible' because the music industry kept demanding music that they didn't feel was right for them... Europe kept making records - 'Secret Society' (2006)... 'Last look at Eden' (2009)... 'Bag of bones' (2012)... and 'Walk the Earth' (2017)... but are still popular for their 80's hits. Europe are working on a new album and celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2023.

Other great Europe songs are "Rock The Night", "Cherokee", "Superstitious" and "Prisoners In Paradise". The band is still together touring and releasing new music. Songs from their newer era I would suggest "Last Look At Eden", "New Love In Town", "War Of Kings" and "Walk On Earth".

I saw these guys open for Def Leppard in the summer of 88 at Cayuga County Fairgrounds. It was so hot, people were passing out and had to be handed over the wall by the stage. By the time I got to the front it started pouring and cooled it off so I got to watch a good part of the show right up front. Such a fun show.

I also saw them open for Def Leppard in 88 at Orange county Fair grounds and it was an amazing concert. They also had 38 Special there as well. I too was right in the front from the beginning. Though many tried, I would not let anyone take my spot, lol. I Couldn't get any closer. Joey Tempest face was just beautiful and flawless 😊What a great night!

Many hits from Europe since the mid 80’s poured out from them .. I know this I graduated 91 .. and my JR. High school years proved this .. going back to 1986 is when I really chose them as my 1st ever favorite band !! And I had long hair then .. lol

Joey Tempest is still and has been the lead singer of Europe. They have never had another singer. I believe all the original band members are still in the band except for Mic Michaeli. Gotta do "Rock the Night" next. Very cool rocking song!

The beginning of this with the piano made me think of a song I completely forgot about. Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills. It is instrumental piano that made the hits of the late 70's. I just listened to it again and it all came right back. You need to hear that one!

Awesome ballad from Europe, Joey Tempest has really great voice, very melodic. You should check their songs "i'll cry for you" and "Prisoners in paradise" plus "Girl from Lebanon" from their same titled album Prisoners in paradise. You could also check out if you really like this great Rock band these songs from their Out of this world album "Superstitious", "Coast to coast", "Let the good times Rock" and "Open your heart". Europe had split up for a few years but then after some time came back with a more deeper and bluesy sound, still pretty cool.

To be honest as a person who was a teen in the 80's the late 80's hair band days really urked me lol...but I did enjoy some of the power ballads of the day and this is one of them. I really loved the punk/new wave era of the early to mid 80's but was sooooooooooooooo glad when the hair band days of the late 80's was knocked out of the park by the alt rock take over of the early to mid 90's. It was such a relief to hear Nirvana and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam etc absolutely turn the whole music scene upside down. Love you two and great reaction.
