Originally, the company named Bing, based in Nuremberg, Germany, manufactured the first toy trains made of tin. On the contrary to today's model railway, these tinplate trains were primarily focused on gaming experience, not on scale conformity or on details. Model trains from the early years - the pre-war period - were mainly made of tin or tinplate. In the 1920’s Bing was the European market leader in tinplate model railways, which were initially operated with a wind-up power and later with electric power. Even the famous company Marklin focused on model railways and produced in the 1930's tin plate trains. Today, railways as well as tin toys of yesterday are absolute rarities. And, if it still is a fully functional model railway, then it’s absolutely unique. Please, take a look at www.pilentum.org for more information.

I’ve always enjoyed seeing the Lionel Prewar Tinplate trains in action. And now I get to enjoy watching the märklin 0 gauge tinplate trains in action and it’s just as fascinating. If not more.

Why is "Germany" written in English on the rolling stock when everything else is written in German? Oder was?

Very sweet! Is that a prewar 66/12920 or a newer version? Looks a lot like mine with a slight variation of the smoke box front.

Most of the locomotives have the name 66, do you know the 1or 2 letters before that?

By the way, most of the märklin 0 gauge trains are prewar, there were some untill 1952 but they were all built after prewar disigns.

@@justaboringjoha3678 .....I just took a look at it. It’s a little worn but looks like “H.R or H.B”. I recently learned Marklin did not make engines post 1952. I bought a small collection about a year ago from a man in his early 80’s whose uncle sent them back from Germany at the end of the war. It included the locomotive I mentioned, seven freight cars (with boxes), four passenger cars (1941, 1942, 1944 and 1945) with boxes and a lot of track and switches all with boxes. I believe the passenger cars are pretty valuable although I’m not sure how much.

@@hastyone9048 The HR 66 was made after the war so it could be you own one of these as a after war model. In my oppinion those class 01 german pacifics are beautiful. The 40cm passenger cars are around 500-1000€ but I don't know the price in the US.

@@justaboringjoha3678 ....Thank you for the quick reply. That’s strange about the locomotive. The wooden crate the trains were shipped in is marked “1945”. It also came with paperwork including a “1941” Marklin catalog. They were sent by a US officer stationed in Bavaria to NYC, where I live. The price of the coaches is 500-1000£ each or for the set? Thanks again.
