This video will show you how to kill Mares Tail without using an expensive proprietary weed killer. Perhaps someone who has Japanese Knotweed on their property could try this product on that particular weed.

I've been trying WD-40 earlier this year, but the horsetail always came back. Kurtail from Progreen is a better option. It's expensive, but accounting for the dilution rate and the area it will cover, I think it works out cheaper than spraying WD-40 over large areas.
@nickydraper55592 жыл бұрын
@@perishingtardis Hi how many times did you treat the horsetail with WD40?
@perishingtardis2 жыл бұрын
@@nickydraper5559 Some parts, probably 3 or 4 times throughout the spring and summer this year. The WD-40 just kills the top growth, but then it will just come back again. Honestly, if you have a lot of this stuff growing, I'd recommend the Kurtail. It costs about 3 times as much as regular weedkillers like Roundup, but it really works. I sprayed a large area in June with Kurtail. After about 4 weeks there was some regrowth, but it was MUCH thinner, and the new shoots were weak and thin and couldn't stand up properly. So last weekend (about 8 weeks after the first treatment) I sprayed with Kurtail again. You just gotta keep kicking this stuff while it's down. And realize that this plant is prehistoric - you will never be able to kill it completely - just keep it severely weakened. As someone pointed out to me on another forum, the horsetail plant actually survived the asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs... so we have little chance of fully eradicating it :-D
@nickydraper55592 жыл бұрын
@@perishingtardis You just made me laugh out loud. I have sprayed the horsetail 4 x with WD 40 and there are a few little bits coming up but not many. I bought 5 litres of WD 40 for the price of half a litre of the weed killer i had used before. I will wait until all the WD 40 is used up before looking to buy Kurtail. The WD40 is working but as you say it does not die quickly. Where do you get your Kurtail from and what amount do you buy?
@paulc1803 жыл бұрын
I saw this yesterday and I was sceptical but I grabbed my tin of WD40 as we have some of this coming though the fence from our neighbours house, he has quite an infestation. I treated a small area and then went out shopping, it was a really hot sunny day yesterday so no rain at all. We returned home about 4 hours later and the mares tail i had sprayed was black so i thought i would spay a little more. I popped out about 5 minutes ago and it has all turned black and very fragile so it looks like my scepticism was not warranted, it seems to work really well. Great shout Jim.

I experimented with WD-40. It does kill the above-ground part of the plant, but it returns again with a few weeks as the below-ground part of the plant is still untouched. I bought some Kurtail from Progreen and have had much better results, as it's a systemic weedkiller than goes down into the rhizomes. Kurtail is expensive, but accounting for the dilution rate and the area it will cover, I think it works out cheaper than spraying WD-40 over large areas.

Glyphosphate touch kills this troublesome weed, so it is a question of which is the least expensive, WD40 or Round-Up touch, however as with Bindweed there is only one way to get rid of this nightmare and that is dig twice spade depth, down on hands and knees and pick every single bit of it up, and do not use a rotavator or tiller until you are sure it has gone, if you do, you will indeed reap what you sow as this more modern way of tilling soil will indeed spread this horrid nuisance everywhere, and I mean everywhere. No rotavators for me, double dig, thin soil with a hoe, hand tiller, and plant up.

I have horsetail - it's endemic in this area. I watched this with interest. Last year I came across a forum were someone in the US was using it on horsetail in his block driveway he was ecstatic. However, I am supposing it kills the top growth off. I tried glysophate (not Round up but the 360/ltr industrial strength stuff at 1:20 in water). That actually works. However all I can do about the grass is mow it and take walk around every three day and just cut the any new growth - takes persistence but seems it control it OK and so far it has not spread. It likes it under slabs for sure so I occasionally spray it. I have read about people who by cutting have almost eliminated it. I suppose it depends on our garden size. Mine is all grass so it's easy to cut/mow (apart from the slabs).

I have a problem with Marestail/Horsetail in my garden and I've sprayed it with WE40. Like Jim says, it turns the plant black and it dies within a few days. However, WD40 does not kill the roots (rhizomes) of the plant and almost as quickly as one plant turns black, several more pop up around the dead one. So the effects of WD40 on the Horsetail are superficially impressive but in reality it is no more effective than pulling the plant out by hand -- in both cases new ones soon appear. To get rid of this nightmare plant permanently requires something to kill its rhizomes. I've used a number of different Weed Killers most of them containing glyphosate (cost me a fortnights holiday in Spain!), and it has been partially successful but the Horsetail still keeps coming back. I wonder if the answer is to first spray with WD40, to damage the protective coating on the plant, and after 12 / 24 hours spray with glyphosate based Weed Killer to kill the roots?

I had a few horse weeds / mare tail growing around my bushes out front and I was so excited that the large one about 4 ft. And then my husband pulled it out on me. I was pissed! They are edible and medicinal. I feel sorry for people who don’t know God’s wonders that he put on this Earth.

Horse tail is poisonous to cattle and horses and can kill them off quite quickly. Furthermore, they spread like wildfire and will choke out any other plants, flowers, grass in your garden. I find it ignorant of you to assume people want to fight horsetail for no good reason. We have a very good reason indeed - it kills our beloved horses, and it takes over your garden. Educate yourself next time before judging others.
