00:00 Intro
00:03 Happy Meal Physics: vintage KFC toy from the 1990s morning show Beakman's World. As the image of Beakman nears, the Liza figure spins and moves away. The base of the dancing girl is rounded and has inside a magnet oriented north straight up while the image of Beakman has a magnet with its north at a 45 degree angle. When brought together the magnet under the girl tilts towards 45 degrees but then the figure becomes unstable and rolls to restore balance. Anyone else remember this show? The rat guy was pretty funny.
00:18 Poemotion
00:36 Opticum 3 Font
00:59 "Courtship": kinetic art from the 1970's- two magnets, counterbalanced, interact chaotically in a dance that is different each time they are set into motion. Produced by Rathcon Inc. of Dallas TX, and according to the accompanying instruction manual, This vintage physics toy was featured on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. Amazing what can be found on eBay!
01:23 Convex Lens Internal Reflection
01:41 Enantiomorphic Rattleback Pair: one reverses to always spin clockwise, the other reverses to spin counter-clockwise. This behavior is related to the asymmetric shape of the bottom of this kind of rattleback, each is somewhat propeller shaped with an "S" curve along the bottom ridge. This pair are mirror images of each other (enantiomorphs) in terms of shape. When set to spin a reversal can take place due to a complicated combination of friction, precession, and instability induced vibrations which will transform the rotational energy into into rattling (energy of oscillations) and then into rotational energy in the opposite direction!
02:18 Hygroscopic Cellophane
02:33 Birefringence in Calcite
02:52 Fluorescence and Birefringence in Calcite
03:11 Pyrite Sun
03:25 Swirl Around Top: the magnetic tipped top stays on the perimeter of the steel plate template- but since the plate has a bit of mass to it the top and plate both circle around their combined center of mass. This kinetic art toy takes advantage of Newton's 3rd law and rotational kinetic energy. Produced by The Toycrafter in the 1990s these tops are out of production but can often be found on eBay.
03:55 Europium Doped Strontium Salt
04:09 Colordrippers
04:45 Water Spinner @exploratorium: The parabolic surface of a contained liquid under the combination of centripetal acceleration and the pull of gravity. Centripetal acceleration increases proportional to the distance from the axis of rotation, so the liquid stacks highest far from the center. Also, a faster spin rate results in a deeper and steeper parabola- note how the surface flattens out as the exhibit comes to rest. Additional physics- a pair of waves (from the initial impulse) travel along the parabolic surface of the contained liquid, creating temporary peaks and valleys as they constructively and deconstructively interfere. As seen here in 240 fps slow motion, the symmetric waves travel and reflect along the curved surface for the first few rotations until damped out via viscosity and friction.
Exploratorium museum in San Fransisco, USA that features the physics and psychophysics of vision and perception.
05:15 Light Pipe Sculpture
05:42 Light Pipe
05:57 Acasta Gneiss: a sample of the oldest confirmed rock formed on Earth. Using multiple radiometric dating methods this somewhat ordinary looking rock has been measured to be 4.031 billion years old! This sample comes from the Northwestern Territories of Canada taken from an outcrop of rock on an island in the Acasta River, the only known source of this rock.
06:11 Itacolumite: a bendable, flexible rock. Two samples of this naturally occurring quartz-rich sandstone- a sample from the field, and a cut thin section that shows how flexible this rock really is.
