Oh my god, thank you for this one. I've been stuck back and forth between the Tamron 28-75 and the Sony 24-105, and this lens solves my problems with both.

Exactly my situation! So glad i held out for this one. It really is a little heavy though, haven't gotten round to using it for events or travelling proper yet.

I wanted the Tamron since it came out and now that I finally decided to upgrade I’m going to get this one. I don’t mind the weight if it has a better build quality and it looks better. Once again you can’t go wrong with Jason Vong 👍🏻

@@brendantaylor2623 Because it's expensive, has onion rings, and not particularly sharp @ 70mm? Sony associates GM with sharpness and bokeh, and at $2600 they better deliver them. Would also like to see if the Sigma is more lightweight than the GM.

I also thought it was too heavy for casual use so I then rented the tamron 28-75mm. Tamron was great and light but then I realized I shot half of my images at 24mm when I rented the Sigma. So I had to go with the 16-55mm F2.8 on APSC. That’s a 24-83mm équivalent and super light! Yes, it’s APSC but sometimes for travel the combination of weight and focal length matters the most! Thanks again for a funny video!

I bought the A7III with the Tamron 17-28. I wouldn't mind this sigma over the Tamron 28+75 except for the weight. I think Tamron makes more sense for me now. It's quite light and complements the Sony bodies more.

I'm using an A7iii with 17-28; I bought and returned the 28-75. Here's why: I love small and light, a lot, so I completely agree with you. I've used (but not owned) the 24-70GM, and it really is quite a brick. The 17-28 is awesome because it doesn't feel like it has many compromises over the 16-35, is super small, and just a fun little lens. Here's what I didn't like about the 28-75. 24 vs 28 is noticeable; it just is. It really does have this feel of making you wish you could zoom out just a bit further. Next, the MF focus ring, at least on my copy, was truly awful. It felt like it had zero resistance. To be clear, I don't even mind focus by wire, I just hated THAT one. Lastly, the bokeh just isn't that attractive. When comparing the 28-75 vs the GM, the Tamron wins just because the price of the GM is so massively high. Now that this is in the picture? I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the recommendations for the Tamron start moving this way. If absolute small and light is your #1, then yeah, still Tamron, but the Sigma has a lot of big wins too.

@@elliotw.888 Tamron for me. I love that it's so small and light. It comes down to how you shoot and what you need, but I don't care about 14 vs 17, but I do care about small and light. 14 is *really wide.* If you want that look, well there you go, but 17 is damn wide too. When the 17-28 is on, I'm super small and light, it's weather sealed, and I'm just pretty content. The 14-28 looks nice, but I'm not interested in more or less double the price to get 14-17; it's just not a need I have. Tamron is literally half the weight. 17-28 + Sigma 24-70 is a hell of a 'budget' combo.

@@alexchiem1175 I got one last week! :D Haven't rolled it through its paces yet, and I'm no expert, but I love it so far. Just ticks the right boxes for me. No MASSIVE $$$ of the GM, fixes all the things that annoyed me about the 28-75 for just a little more. I still love my 17-28, but the Sigma 24-70 is just so much better than the 28-75 for me. It's bigger and heavier, though.

Jason I know this video is old, but I come to all your reviews before I decide on my purchases. And you’ve never let me down yet. I plan on getting this lens for my a7iv and I am so excited to finally get a zoom lens over my sigma 35 1.4

This is a great option, with weather sealing and short focus distance. I bought the Sony 16-55, for APSC, it costs 200 more, no weather sealing, not great minimum focus distance (although the same IQ as Sigma 16mm f/1.4 more or less) . A7M3 + Sigma is more bang for your buck than A6600+ Sony 16-55. I sold my FF cameras and bought 2 A6100 which are great (300 less than A6400). This is tempting if in 2020 i may get a FF option. I bought also the RX100M7, which is really great for travel. Close to A6100 + 16-55 in daylight (at 200% you notice softer corners and less contrast, but otherwise hard to tell), The RX100M7 is better than a Sony APSC with the cheap kit zoom 16-50. Anyway great review. I think the 4mm at the wide end are a huge deal for a travel zoom. 28-75 may be ok for events, people photos/fashion, but too limiting for travel. buying a separate wide angle would cost more than the price difference between the Tamron and Sigma. Also switching lenses when traveling increases the risk of dust on the sensor, drops and spills.

Thanks Jason, in original video when you bought it in Tokyo, you said two things. 1) that you would sell this lens after the review & 2) that you had 24-70 2.8 gm and you'd never get rid of that. Hence my question. I get that Sigma is best value for money, but if money was no object which would you recommend?

I'm torn between the Sony 35mm and this Sigma 24-70. I'm an image quality freak but I can only afford one lens this year. If the Sigma quality is very close to Sony then I suppose I will go that way. Super low light is not a big deal for me.

My thoughts are I don’t buy zooms for the bokeh. Having said that, I was particularly offended by the OOF rendering of the Tamron 28-75. It was just ugly to me. So I bought this because I don’t want to pay the GM prices for a zoom and it couldn’t be worse than the Tamron. It’s not. Nothing special, but it’s decided better than the Tamron for me and since it’s as good or better on everything else, especially the build quality, the Sigma wins for me

Nice lens, but i prefer my sony 24 105 g. More versatile with modern sensors. Bokeh at 105mm f4, it's not so bad.

I just went on a 10 day trip and brought my normal lenses (12,24,35,85 & 70-200 f4). At the end of the trip, I wished I had the Sigma 24-70 zoom instead of the primes. So yes, I hope to get before my next trip. And to those who wonder why I don't have the Tamron 28-75....had it and didn't like it.

I would say that a lot of your gripes are with the 24-70 form factor not this lens in particular. In my opinion that's the type of stuff that doesn't really belong in the middle of the review for this lens (especially if it's lighter/smaller than other 24-70s). You did a good job explaining yourself but I think throwing in those two cents at the end is enough! Great video as always though!

Great review as always! I am in the market to buy a standard zoom for my sony... the only option within my budget is the Tamron and this Sigma. I have seen a lot of people facing this issue with dust (just after a month or two). I really wanted to buy the Sigma but after reading those I want to go for Tamron. I guess you have used Sigma for a while, if so could you please post a picture of the front element or share your overall experience? Thanks!

I find Sigma Art bokeh to be frantic. I still buy their lenses bc they're great anyway, but yeah the bokeh is definitely not the greatest

I have the Sigma and my friend has the Tamron, every time he sees my photos he says wow those pictures really pop, then he complains about not being able to zoom to 24mm on his. Many times the 28mm is too narrow and he can't back up, however he always says, "but I like mine lens because of the weight". Ok if that's a deal breaker fine. I love my Sigma because of the image quality, period! I don't buy a lens for weight I buy it for image quality and sharpness. if I want to Vlog on the go I use a lighter prime, no regrets here!

Jason, I have the 24-105 F/4G from Sony right now and I absolutely love it. But for the shallower DoF and portraits I tend to use my canon 50mm f/1.4 (on a Sigma MC-hammer adapter). Would you recommend swapping the Sony with the Sigma?

three years later i'm having a similar situation, recenty bought my A6700 and a Sony 18-105 F/4G since it was somewhat affordable after spending on the camera itself, I've been enjoying it so far but sometimes i feel the need to have more aperture available when I try taking pictures of moving subjects. Did you get the Sigma lens? how did it go?

I keep reading about the dust problem online, but haven’t seen anything in any video reviews. The dust is the only reason I am hesitant to commit to this lens.

"Amount" of bokeh seems a silly notion. More area taken up by in focus objects vs how much of the frame is out of focus is not a function of the lens. You can get a shallow depth of field with a f2.8 makes more sense. Also I do not find the Sigma Bokeh to be distracting as far as what I have seen. My wife's old Pentax 50mm f1.7 SMC has amazingly smooth bokeh which is gorgeous but at wide open the out of focus backgrounds tend to look like they are in front of the focus plane which can feel weird and is an effect I have not seen in other lenses.

How’s the AF for video in low light conditions? Is it as reliable a the Sony GM 24-70mm?

The way I see it is the Sigma is shorter and lighter than the GM, and because it's shorter it should also balance a little better on an A7 camera, from all the reviews I have seen it is sharper than the GM, and because of the 11 aperture blades people have been saying it has better bokeh then the GM, and it has equal build quality and weather sealing. at half the price. I just read a comparison review today comparing it to all the new mirrorless 24/70 f2.8 lenses, including the GM, the new Panasonic Lumix 24/70 f2.8 and the new Canon and Nikon 24/70 f2.8 lenses. and the Sigma was sharper than the GM, and the new Canon L and new Nikon. but the reviewer liked the Lumix best. but he said it was very close with the Sigma, and the Lumix cost twice as much. and I read another review that said the Sigma out resolves the Gm and Tamron when put on an A7r 4. I wish you guys would show the Sigma and Gm side by side without the lens hoods on.

I love sigma and only shoot with sigma lenses on my A7R3, but I wont buy it just on the fact that the barrel extends when zooming. They are a dust magnet, every time you zoom and it extends, it creates a vacuum and sucks in air..air that contains dust. Same principle as a syringe and fluid. I dont like dust getting inside the internals of the lens.

Yo Jason, great video! How were you able to zoom when the camera is on the gimbal? Doesn't that redistribute the weight which would make you need to rebalance the gimbal?

This is gonna be the lens I pick up for my new Sony a7iii I plan on picking up! Plus sigma has their new 14-24 2.8 which will cover almost all the range with two lenses. Now just need to wait for that dig,a 70-200 to complete the line up.

from my own experience the bokeh is great, light spot are circular for me rather than oval like with the sony gm, understandably the bokeh isnt as good as most primes but its been pretty good for me. In the video i see it as well when you for instance pause at 8:07 or a bit later the bokeh seems perfectly fine to me, could be because im just a hobby photographer though

Hi! Great review! thank you for sharing your knowledge. I wanted to know your opinion about this lens on an a6300 body. Since the 6300 don't have in-body stabilization, Will the image stabilization be an issue?

I’ve sold my Sony Zeiss 16-35mm to buy this Sigma and then I ‘ve sold my Samyang 85mm f1.4 to buy new Sigma 85mm f1.4 dg dn. I have the Sony 24mm f1.4 G. Master. In the future I will need an ultra wide angle, prime or zoom.? Sigma 14-24? Thank you so much 😊

I'd like to see travel backpacks compared, not only peak design or LowePro but also those advertised in ebay/amazon that are anti-theft and have external usb for phone/camera charging. Keep up the good work!

Hej Jason. Great video as always. Can I get your opinion. I am debating if I Should get the sony 24-70 mm gm or the sigma 24-70mm. If money wasnt Something you factor in, which One would you pick?

Hi Jason, Big thanks for an awesome review! May I have your opinion as to which option is better as I'm contemplating on investing on a Sony mirrorless system: 1. Option 1: A7iii + FE 24 1.4 GM + FE Sigma 24-70 DG DN ART. 2. Option 2: A7iii + FE 35 1.8 + FE 85 1.8 + Sigma 24-70 DG DN ART. I do love the 24mm FL as I did own a Nikon 24mm 1.4G then shooting with it ostly portraits, food, landscapes and cityscapes. Thank you Jason.

Jason, Very nice presentation. Two comments: When you buy Sigma you buy weight. You tell yourself it's better build quality (and it probably is over the Tamron mentioned) and it will take rough conditions better. That may or may not be true but no Sigma groupie will ever be surprised by the weight. It's size (dimensions) were acceptable enough. For the price it has great appeal if you aren't lugging it with you on a death march. Second comment is about Bokeh. For beauty shots, glamour or even general photography this lens may not be so hot , but the shot of the white (if you're aloud to say that anymore), male (if you're allowed to say that any more) mannequin had a futuristic look to it and the 'ballsy' bokeh added to the shot. My opinion, of course.

Great video Jason. I have 2 Prime Sigma ARTs for my Canon..I agree they are heavy but TACH SHARP..I'll never buy a Canon Prime!! I don't shoot video..just stills..I do have the Tamron 28-75 and I am happy with it. It's not a Sony but for the price I make it work! Thanks again!!

I like the bokeh of the Sigma lenses that I've seen online and in photos. I only have one sigma (20mm f/1.4). I shoot mostly on adapted Minolta lenses on my A7III.
