There is now a firmware update to fix that distortion compensation bug with the Sigma 24-70. 🤓🙌 www.sigma-global.com/en/news/2020/02/20/2549/

Sorry, but I betcha Sony has something to say about that. Food for thought! If you want to build lenses for e mount; I would likely have a clause dictating a difference in manipulation of the lens. (Not that I am smart enough to come up with this idea on my own...) This might ensures Sony lenses to have an upper hand no matter what the Quality of the lens turns out to be. Which was the exact reason why I was turned off by the Tamron and which is the exact reason why I will be turned off by the Sigma. And likely settle for the 24-105 for an all around lens. After all sigma will likely have 3.3-3.5 t stop anyway.

Vikman Photography i think Tamron and Sigma are different also. I think it’s the direction of the ring in the Sigma.
@frankfeng2701

Zoom direction follows a certain pattern: Canon, Olympus, Sigma FF zooms all zoom in when turning counterclockwise; Nikon, Sony, Fuji, Panasonic, Tamron, Sigma aps-c zooms all zoom in when turning clockwise. Focus direction is all over the place. Zoom/focus ring location is all over the place.

I've been able to test both sigma and tamron. I'm using the tamron for almost a year now. So here are a few thing : - the zoom range is IMO a lot better on the sigma, those 4mm wider are a lot better than the 5mm at the en of tamrons zoom range. In fact that was the number one reason I was not sur if I wanted to go with the GM or the tamron. It's a great single travel lens for portraits, street photography and landscape, but sometimes 28mm feels like you'd want the 24mm. - The weight is still a big point to consider, I've got a few other sigma art lenses, they are very crispy but holy fuck they are heavy. I don't mind it if I do studio shoot or some other shoots when im really prepared and I have my lights and all that with me, but when I'm traveling, I find tamrons weight extremely attactive. In fact, when I leave for a trip I only take the tamron with me all the time. - the price difference might be bigger between the sigma and the tamron, I'm living in europe and here are a lot of people selling the tamron online. Pricewise in switzerland we have it like that ( for new instore lens ): Sony - 2000 Sigma - 1200.- Tamron - 800.- But the tamron can easily be found around 600.- if you're not in a rush, and with 10 years warranty you don't risk a lot. So at the end of the day, I'd still recemmend you to buy the tamron one. If weight and money is not a thing, then go for the sigma. But Id rather get the tamron + another prime than the sigma. Thanks for the video, have a great day

Loved the review! This format should be the industry standard for a lens review. Almost never I want to spend 40 minutes zooming on images to analyze sharpness on various f-stops. Well, now that I think about it, I would spend 40 minutes listening to you reviewing stuff, so thank you for coming up with this format! =) I guess I'm selling my Tamron for the Sigma... Even though it's pretty much just a backup lens and I love the weight and extra reach, I deeply hate the non-linear focus ring.

I felt like one of just a very few people who wasn't enamored with the 28-75 (probably made worse by the fact I use a GM at work.) The MF ring and blocky bokeh just ruined that lens for me (though I do love the 17-28.) This just seems like an absolute perfect compromise: it seems like they took the Tamron philosophy of "smaller and cheaper" than the GM, but without crossing into that grey area of "Okay, this just feels like too many compromises." Good focus ring, good build, good price, full 24-70 range, weather sealing, fantastic MFD? I'm sold.

I'm on my 2nd copy of this Sigma lens, and both have had bad dust intrusion. The first lens had two large dust particles visible beyond the front element before it was ever used outside; it was toyed with indoors and then kept in the camera bag. Second lens has dust inside as well now, despite it being said that the seal was improved. I understand dust intrusion for extending barrel lenses, but this is pretty poor performance. Image wise, the lens is good, but I regret not immediately going with the Sony lens.

Years ago Tamron and Sigma were on par for battling for the budget lens market. But Sigma have really stepped up their game and compete for IQ vs the best lens out there while delivering at prices to appeal to the budget minded markets. Tamron is really just a good budget lens company now, but for what its worth for anyone these days, you can't go wrong with Sigma lens.

Great video. But Gerald forgot one thing: Dust protection. The front of the sigma is made of a material which pulls a lot of dust in time. This problem does not exist with the Sony lense. Hence I went for Sony instead of sigma.

The Tamron has the advantage of being lighter and smaller with good Image Quality for a affordable price. Also if you buy any other Tamron lense the filter thread remains the same (67cm I believe). So for instance buying the 17-28 and 28-75 you pay roughly around 1800 bucks. The Sigma does have better image quality yet the filter thread is not the same. The 14-24 needs a special filter. And in the end the total price is somewhere around 2400 bucks. The Sony Gmaster might be the best regarding autofocus and IQ. But for the 16-35 and 24-70 in total it adds up to almost 4500 bucks! In the end it is all about what YOU can afford and prefer. For me I stay with the Tamron lenses because I like to keep my bag as light as possible and I do not want to bring extra ND filters. Great video again Gerald! Going to do a comparison video too

Gary Jahman very good points 🙂 One thing that keeps me completely away from the tamron, is that with those lenses I have no way to get 24 and 35mm in one lens, very time that I need to switch between those focal length I have to switch lenses.

@@WuschelofDespair yeah that wouldn't be very beneficial for you. So did you get the sigma?

@WuschelofDespair 4 жыл бұрын
@@GaryJahman I didn't get any of it yet, because a focal range of 24-70 isn't really interesting to me. It was more about if I get the 16-35 f/4 or wait for the Tamron, but when they anounced that it's only a 17-28 it was a pretty easy choice for me to got with the 16-35, allthough it's just an f/4. Should I be shooting more events in the future for whatever reason I will consider the Sigma though because I find those extra 4mm to be important. When I was using the 28-70 Kit lens I often felt, that the 28mm is just not wide enough.

Since it hasn't been clearly pointed out in comments, the weird jitter from the Sigma 24-70mm has been totally fixed by a firmware update from feb/20. All future lenses from that point come without that issue, and all lenses purchased before just need to be updated.

It's really interesting to see how much Sigma has changed in recent years. Back when I started in photography in the 70s, Sigma were very much seen as the poor man's alternative. They made interesting lenses with unique features but were never very good optically. Tamron were always the best value third party lenses for quality and price, and seem to have remained that way, and have always been my choice as a cash-strapped photographer. Now I need to overcome my prejudice and maybe have a look at Sigma as an alternative.

Well, I absolutely love my Sigma 14-24 on the A7RIII. I have the 24-70 GM which does a great job, but, I mainly shoot landscapes, so I can take my time with still objects. Once they iron out the issue with the Sigma, if I did not have the GM, I would not hesitate to purchase the Sigma 24-70mm.

In UK the sigma it's 1050pound, the tamron I can get it for 550£, for double the price it's hard to justify the sigma..I might go with the Tamron and with the spare money get a FE 35 1.8

I know this video is a few years old but this is EXACTLY the comparison i was looking for as i am getting into the sony ecosystem and the standard zoom range will be my first lens purchase. Well done and thank you.

At 10:35 the Sigma clearly produced the best bokeh, What surprised me is that the Tamron produced better bokeh results than the G Master, which I wouldn't have imagined. Great review... short, sweet and to the point. Subscribed.

I'm an old geezer, and must have all my lenses zoom same direction. You young smart togs can handle the inconsistencies better than I. Good luck with that. Thanks for the comparison Jerald. I look forward to seeing another comparison in the real world where bokeh is judged by more than just the shape of out of focus specular highlights. And I must say, the neutral colors of the GMaster not only match my other GM and ZA lenses, but are also much cleaner on skin tones (similar to Canon color) and less hyper saturated on greens and yellows. Cooler toned lenses are always a better match for high end glass like Otus and Leica which never tint warm. Would be interested to know if the Sig and Tammy keep their exposure value consistency throughout the zoom range as well as the GM does.

CTphotographX Clyde I am with you fully. If I may ask your personality. I own the 16-35 GM and an 85 1.4GM 50 1.4 Zeiss and 70-200 GM. I’m missing a standard zoom in my arsenal. I’m leaning towards the 24-105 g lens. Just for versatility. Tho it is an f4. Or do I have to goto the gm?????

@@kasterchoi7952 The 24-105/4 satisfies most, for most things, and should be good choice since you have the 50ZA. My problem with it was the extreme fly-wire focus acceleration, and so instead I got a used 28-135/4 G Power Zoom which turned out to be my favorite combined with the 50ZA and the others you mention. I use it a lot for both stills and video. Handles great and shoots sharp enough for 24mp a9. But it's a huge lens and I shoot jobs with. For every day use I got the GM-24-70 and enjoy the extra f2.8. For walk around, I just use a6600 with 16-70/4 ZA. You've got a pretty safe bet with the 24-105/4 since you have the 50ZA. Depends on how much you need manual focus. Sharpness at 105/4 is good nice, but not on the level of your 85/1.4 or 70200GM at 100mm. I found myself never using the 24105 at 105 because it paled in comparison to what I already had, so the extra zoom range wasn't needed, and it distorts pretty bold at 24. I like the GM2470 better all around.

I own the Tamron 28-75, and have been eyeballing the new Sigma. Your video just might make my wife mad. However, I do own the Tamron 17-28 and am planning on purchasing the Tamron 70-180. And as you mentioned, the muscle memory switch between the rings is gonna be a pain in the arse, so maybe my wife won't be mad after all. Gerald, seriously mad, your videos rock! It's no wonder you're fast becoming (and in my opinion, you already are) the best gear reviewer out there.

Great review. I still don't regret purchasing the Tammy earlier this year. I almost exclusively shoot stills, so video performance is not an issue for me. Had I not purchased it before the Sigma came out, it may be a different ballgame, but I'm not interested enough to sell the Tammy at a loss and pay the difference for the Sigma. If I need 24mm I have the 24 1.4 GM, so I'm cool with the Tammy starting at 28. The issue with the focus and zoom rings being reversed are a strange situation for me, I guess. I shot the Sony 70-300G lens for long time, and that lens' zoom and focus rings are actually "reversed," like the Tamron's so the muscle memory was already there for me. If anything, it was harder for me to get used to the 100-400GM's configuration when I upgraded.

Thank you for this review, you hit on the things I had questions on. The 24mm being at least as wide as 24mm is important and so is the close focusing abilities. Curious to see what the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 will be like when it comes out.

One of the top comparison reviews I've seen! I was about to get the Tamron, but the bad manual focus and lack of features were deal breakers.
