Amazing Visual Effects for Sh! The Octopus 1937

for this scene, the actress was made up in exaggerated highlights and shadows (including her teeth) using a single color shade of makeup. When filmed through a filter the same shade as the makeup, it's invisible to the camera. Take the filter away and the makeup suddenly becomes visible. Besides a filter, the makeup can also be hidden by similar-colored light.
This technique was created by cinematographer Karl Struss.
Movie: “Sh! The Octopus” (1937).

A beautifully inventive effect, shocking even. I believe they achieved this by using a lightning set up which combined with a sophisticated make up application, when rotating the light at a particular point, creating this stunning reveal. Incredible.

The scene is shot with a red/blue filter, like those they use for 3D effects. The makeup was done in red, so it's invisible with the red filter. They just have to removed the filter and voila, movie magic. Sad thing that it only works on black and white movies.

They did (pretty much) the same thing in the first "Jekyll and Hyde" movie... The right mixture of makeup and a shift of lighting to create the illusion of an actual physical change in the character. It looks REALLY great for it's time, and I really wish that they'd still experiment with that same kind of process even in today's cinema! We NEED more practical effects these days! 👍

100% agree, CGI today looks nothing like it did in the first Matrix film. For several years CGI has looked like bad animation and not realistic at all. How could they have screwed up CGI special affects so quickly? There’s no doubt the older movies will stand the test of time way more than the crap they churn out today.

@@jpaxonreyes The very fact that it's in black and white is what this special effect depended on, you can't do that with color film, easily anyway. You might be able to pull it off with multiple takes, but you couldn't pull that off in a single take the way they did.

Greetings, and thank you. Just watched Sh! the other night, finding it a fun romp, and then this sea hag sequence happened unexpectedly, and I was flabbergasted as I could discern no edit. Thought it might have been a lighting technique, or that the frames were doctored in the edit room. Decided to check trusty rusty Utoob to see if someone could provide the solution to the mystery, and lo&behold. Furthermore, you've given me a convenient means by which to share the sequence with others. Thanks eversomuch for further advancing my film knowledge. Peace and wellness be with you and yours.
