That’s what I like the old British tools. And real mechanics that can actually fix stuff not just bolting on new parts until the problem is solved like they do here now. My van is in the garage atm and they have said because the fuel pump has broke they can’t fix it 🤯 I mean cmon look what theses blokes can do without a work bench 🤣

With the amount of heat they put into that block, I'd think it would need resurfacing to get it back to flat even if they didn't roll it around like that. Not a mechanic or machinist, though, so I may well be wrong.

@@user-id9eu5hu2y ,скорее всего так.Причем не всякое гомно подойдёт. ИМХО,он не припоем паяет.Медно-цинковый или серебряный. Очень уж на сварку ацителеном похоже.Вроде в качестве присадки куски гвоздей и проволки

He didn't weld it, he brazed it (called "silver soldering" in some countries, as it is in fact a form of soldering, but much much stronger, and works on steel and cast iron), which is the right way to repair cracked cast iron, due to the lower temperature required, reducing warpage and further cracking. You saw him dip the braze in flux a couple of times. He probably used a lot more flux, but it got edited out. The whole process may have taken up to 2 hours. But he is highly skilled.

@Indigenous Onlooker : It's not the slow cooling AFTER welding/brazing that is so important. It is sufficient that it cools slowly enough that no significant temperature gradient develops - it's one part hotter than another that causes the cracking. What is important is to slowly raise the temperature of the whole thing before welding/brazing, so the the local increase in temperature during welding/brazing does not impose stresses that will remain and cause cracking even if the after-cooling is very slow. That is also why it is best to braze old cast iron rather than welding, as the local increase in temperature is kept to a minimum.

Какой пруток ? - чугунный , а флюс бура , чугун по чугуну дает в сечении чугун , который легко обрабатывается слесарным инструментом .

It’s an iron rod I’ve used rods like that in the Army 40 years ago. Works very good if you pack the weldment in heated sand or lime.

@@Shane-zx4ps If we really think about it, we can only surmise that it's a good fix otherwise, no truck driver/operator would gamble on a fix like this if they are not certain that it would last long. The reason being if a fix like this constantly breaks, he will eventually lose his trucking business due to delays in delivering cargo entrusted to him. In turn, these welders will also lose people's confidence in them, eventually, they too would lose their business. For how long it will last is anybody's guess. But I'm pretty sure it will last long as their livelihood and lives depend on it.

@@edwinso8173. Well said, but in saying that, that engine probably gets fixed numerous times by these guys, as it’s cheaper than buying a new engine which they cannot afford..

@@Shane-zx4ps If you mean the very same spot of the same truck part getting welded over and over again then I doubt it very much. The driver/operator would lose his trucking business due to repeated cargo delivery delays or even losing the cargo altogether due to spoilage if it's perishable. But if you mean some other parts getting fixed by other specialists in the area then yes I believe so. You should watch the vid about their mountain roads, you might get a clearer picture of what I'm talking about.

Idk, cast iron already has a lot of carbon, and is already very brittle if not heat treated . I do wonder why they don't heat it and cool it slowly after welding, though? Less brittle?
