I cracked it open and found a DVD player... I cracked that open as well and found a floppy disk.. Dammit... Then I opened the floppy disc and found the picture of my mother, that really creeped me out... But thanks regardless..

I made this discovery years ago! You can lose warranty... What you make to keep it in case 2-3 years as backup drives, and after warranty you open the case and use them as internal drives...

i was kept being told that it was for surveillance camera's. What's that supposed to mean? does it write and read slow on a desktop ?

I actually found this video when trying to find out if the external one was slower than the internal, here in canada the old external one (the one in the video) is 170, the internal is 180, and the newer external with the usb 3.1 ports is 190 on dells website for some reason.. now I still dont know if I shuld get the 170$ or 190$ since who knows if the "usb 3.1" is using the old naming scheme or the new one whe usb 3.1 gen 1 is the exaxt same speed as usb 3.0, and 3.1 gen 2 is twice as fast.. either way its too bad they dont make the 2016 barracuda pros anymore, since the 4k read speed on those are even faster than the wd golds.. its still slower at everything else than though but 4k read is what your gonnanotice the most, unless your just archiving

I have the same old beast of a case. This trick can save your data as well, half the time when an external drive dies it just the USB connection portion taking the drive out will let it work in the computer. If the drive is OK.

But you will lose the 2 year warranty. But a good Idee is it to buy external drives for your backups and after 2 years you can use them internally and buy new external drives for backup ...

Buying external drives to open up and install internally has long been a goto option for datahorders

The external version is $5 cheaper than internal drive at Micro Center. Wish I had known that, I would have gotten the external and saved 5 bux. All im really concerned about is if the damn thing lasts and doesnt die in the next 5 years at least. Using it to store huge game ISOs and complete tv series dls mostly, and rips from my hd-dvr that i want to keep

Hi, I have a 4TB external equal to your however when I connect it to SATA it told me to format the drive and cannot find any data in it even if it is full med data. I also tried to cover the third power pin but it did not work. Thanks for any help

I will bet the stand alone drives are 7200 rpm and the ones in the enclosures are the cheaper 5400 rpm. That's why the price difference. It's worth it to buy the better/faster ones if you do a lot of data transfer, video editing, etc.

people have been shucking external drives for years, its common knowledge that externals are cheaper than internal drives even tho the drives are exactly the same, this is due to them being sold in mass volume and having to compete with the competition, lots of people buy externals because they are easy to just plug and play, because of this they are sold in mass so they have to compete in price, when people buy internal drives they tend to know what they are looking for, so when you see a 5400rpm drive next to a 7200rpm drive it doesn't look very good so they don't tend to sell so well, so its best to tuck them away into a plug and play casing and sell them to the masses.

This "hack" has been used for years. Some companies even use it (backblaze). Anyway, There are some differences, mainly the warranty is a year on the cheaper external drive vs 2 on the internal drive.
