Yes, dead-tree books also work well in sunlight, but carrying a library around on a Kindle weighs ounces not pounds. 1 book or 1000 books, the weight is the same.

Well, the iPad is so much more than just an eBook reader, but I'm sure the Kindle smokes just about any competition in that field.

@brentzittel The Kindle, not being back-lit, is better in all lights. At night you turn on a lamp or get a book light -- like you do with a print book.

i tend to judge books buy their size, smell, feel and page stiffness even before i read it. With the kindle they're all the same so i can read ten ton books that i wouldn't usually read because they're so heavy. Amazing device

The ipad does way more than the kindle. But when it comes to ebooks, the kindle is a clear win.

@macnik64 Actually the display in most E-Readers is a special E-Ink type which has a slow refresh rate which is impractical for most purposes but perfect for displaying still content as it reads exactly like printed paper and only uses electricity to change what is displayed. The misleading thing about this advert is that the product they're comparing the e-reader to is a tablet computer and not a competing e-reader.

@fernandomfernandes It's a book reader. How many apps does a paperback have? No one is denying you can do more "stuff" on an iPad, but a Kindle is a better choice if you read a lot.

The ad is a bit annoying but the basic idea is true; if you want an e-reader, a Kindle beats the iPad on all fronts.

@OnlineFck The same way you'd read any book -- with a light. Lamp, book light. A light source. If you mean that the Kindle isn't back-lit, welcome to no eye strain like you get from a computer screen. They even make a cover with a built in book light. Also, the scenario in the commercial is specifically about sunlight.

@Mafia1779 That's not why they lowered prices. As far as e-readers go, you don't buy an ipad for one. Basically the iPad barely dents the market. However, there is a high demand, and lots of competition, and that is causing prices to drop.

@magicpandora Yes, it is -- if only that was the point of the commercial which is about which is the better book reader. If you want something that does a lot of things okay, definitely go with the iPad. If you want the best book reader available today, but a Kindle.

This ad wouldn't even exist if it wasn't for Apple trying to claim they were the best e-reader while attempting to push Amazon out of the market by forcing publishers to raise their prices. Apple has an amazing device that does a ton of stuff very well. Really there shouldn't be any comparison between the two but Apple pushed the issue so Amazon fought back. Yes the iPad is cool, but the Kindle is better for reading. Buy what you want and be happy with it and let others do the same.

@chellegame its just the fact that you're on a computer on your vacation. normally i do see people reading actual books poolside. i understand people also enjoy playing video games for fun, but if i were to see someone playing a gameboy poolside, i'd laugh. on the other hand, if a couple people were playing chess outside, it'd be different. theres just something about computers and nature that just doesnt mix. you still may disagree with me on my view, but that's what you misunderstood.

@chadd990 I take my laptop on vacation too, not that I lug it to the pool. A lot of people do look forward to reading on vacation though, especially people who don't have enough time while at home. I think a vacation is whatever the person wants it to be. :) I really wasn't trying to misrepresent your point.

@freezazoid I have an iPhone and love it. However, the iPad is a different issue. I can do EVERYTHING on my phone, that I could do on an iPad, yet Apple are willing to make a "new" product, take the camera off it, leave the same dated technology, and price it in the same bracket as laptops! It's ridiculous, considering the average netbook runs Windows! (not to mention it having about 60GB of hard-drive at entry-level). I guess the question concerning the commission of the iPad is; why?

@5iv3z Too expensive. 20 dollars a book vs 10 dollars. If you buy 14 books, you save money. Compound that with easy portability and space saving, for vacations travel, or just at home, you got a winner.

Amazon aren't allowed to slate Apple for misleading the truth, Check the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) Amazon will have had to tell apple exactly what they where planning to say about them, otherwise the advertising would have been pulled. Amazon are only allowed to say they have better contrast than apple only if it's true, Kindle can't do much else apart from read you a book and some other stuff, so if competition is stiff, i,e Ipad, they're gonna go for any angle they can get.

You can read eBooks on the iPad, yes, but its not the sole purpose of the device, with the Kindle it is. The commercial just doesn't make that much sense in that aspect.

Kindle to iPad in the dark... I have a home that has a LED night light that runs off my internal battery, and I can run for days, how about you... (cue crickets chirping) Hey, Apple fanboys, face up to it, the Kindle offers a better reading experience, period. I like reading. I like reading for hours at a time without eye strain. I like reading on vacation, in the sun, on the beach. The iPad doesn't offer the same reading experience. I am getting an iPad, but not for reading. David

@OnlineFck Clearly I said no such thing. What I did say is that a commercial meant to spotlight reading in the sun wouldn't go into the advantages of reading it at night. I however, did go into why the Kindle screen is not backlit -- less eyestrain. iPad is the superior device for a lot of tasks, but Kindle is the superior book reader and one of the reasons that's so is what you're trying to imply is a disadvantage -- easier on the eyes.
