PINAC, baby. Serious tips - wear a suit, white safety hat (usually indicates authority, if the hat is white), hi-viz, safety boots and a lanyard badge that simply states 'PINAC: Approved Inspector'. Carry a clipboard with a printed 'PINAC Inspection Checklist' on it. On a large enough site where they are used to strange people/visitors, virtually nobody will challenge you, in most cases because you will come across as a 'management' type and they will dare not even speak to you. Walk round quickly and confidently with your head up as if you are busy and doing something very important. If somebody asks what you are doing, adopt a confident, slightly arrogant manner that assumes they may now be in trouble for interrupting your important work, and in a posh voice (don't overdo it) state, 'I'm sorry, who are you?' and just keep firing questions back at them, don't ever answer their questions.
