Ghostbusters Afterlife (2021)
Ghostbusters: Afterlife[a] is a 2021 American supernatural comedy film directed by Jason Reitman from a screenplay he co-wrote with Gil Kenan. It is the sequel to Ghostbusters (1984) and Ghostbusters II (1989), and the fourth film in the Ghostbusters franchise. The film stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd, alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Sigourney Weaver reprising their characters from the earlier films. Set 32 years after the events of Ghostbusters II, it follows a single mother and her children who move to an Oklahoma farm they inherited from her estranged father Egon Spengler, a member of the original Ghostbusters.

No clue how Ernie Hudson (The guy who plays Winston) has done it but he's aged incredibly! He turns 79 this year and you would think looking at him that he's in his 50's, nevermind almost 80!

Bill Murray and Harold Ramis had a falling out during the filming of “Groundhog Day” and were estranged for 20 years, only making up just before Harold died. I suspect that, and Jason Reitman’s relationship with his own father, were big inspirations for the story.

The big important things to realize about this movie are that Harold Ramis died in 2014. He had sort of a falling out with the other guys, and they never really talked again for like 30 years. Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd wrote the original movies. Ivan Reitman directed the original movies. THIS movie was directed by Jason Reitman, Ivan's son. Jason was the original Ghostbusters fan. He grew up on the sets of the original movies, and saw it all before the movies ever even came out in theaters. Jason also played the annoying little kid in Ghostbusters 2 who mocks the Ghostbusters at the birthday party. Jason Reitman is a pretty successful director in his own right, but as an indie movie director. This is the first big franchise movie that he ever made. And it's the ONLY time he ever got to work with his father. They made this movie together. This movie was done a year or two before it was released, but it was delayed in release due to the pandemic. A few months after Afterlife was released in theaters Ivan Reitman himself passed away. Ivan Reitman was also one of the two body doubles who played Egon in this movie - standing in for his old friend Harold, who passed away in 2014. So this movie is Jason Reitman's first and final project with his father, his way of honoring his father's work, their way of honoring Harold Ramis and the original Ghostbusters, AND it ended up being a swan song for Ivan Reitman himself. This movie means a crazy amount more than anybody really expected it to. Every time I see the ending of this movie it punches me in the gut. I get the impression that Jason Reitman only really intended to make this one Ghostbusters movie. Because, like I said, he's more of an indie director and kind of likes to do his own thing. But this movie was obviously very successful, and Sony is a movie studio that can basically never get anything right, so this movie is kind of a genuine miracle for them. They've also established Ghost Corps, kind of a whole branch of Sony Pictures dedicated to purely to developing Ghostbusters. And Jason Reitman seems to now more or less be the head of it. Based on all the behind the scenes stuff from Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire that I've seen, Jason Reitman is now just FULLY invested in Ghostbusters. It's pretty clear that he loves it SO MUCH. As this ending implies, the Ghostbusters head back to New York City. Hence "Frozen Empire" being about the Empire State. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire comes out on March 22, 2024. So, in THREE days. It seems that Jason has now embraced and adopted his father's legacy as his own to keep his father's legacy alive. I say all of that partially to emphasize the insane planet-sized solid steel balls that Jason and Ivan Reitman had in daring to resurrect Egon Spengler in this movie. It was playing with nuclear fire. It was a move so ready to go catastrophically horrifically wrong if they fucked it up even slightly. It would have been seen as horrifically disrespectful and it would have infuriated a PLANET full of Ghostbusters fans. The fact that they pulled it off so fucking perfectly and elegantly in a way that makes me cry every goddamn time I see this movie. And I've seen it like probably 15 times now..... It's a miracle. It's something that SHOULD NOT work. The fact that they made it work somehow is mind-boggling. And, hell, let's not forget to recognize that this movie was carried almost entirely by a 13-year-old girl. Obviously, she was backed by a cast of Amazing side characters - Podcast, her brother, her mom, Paul Rudd, the original Ghostbusters, JK Simmons as Ivo Shandor, and Olivia Wilde as Gozer.... They were all amazing and perfect.... ....But McKenna Grace, as Phoebe, carried like 80% of this movie. When Paul Rudd and Podcast were around, and even a lot of times with her mom and brother, she was always the/a main character. As a side note, they announced a new Ghostbusters animated series AND a Ghostbusters animated movie at the same time that they announced Ghostbusters 4 (Frozen Empire). So Ghost Corps seems to be firing on all cylinders, and we are hopefully about to return to '80s levels of Ghostbusters goodness.🤞 It really cannot be overstated how much of a PHENOMENON Ghostbusters was. People do not understand how big the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were in the 80s and early 90s. It was like the Beatles. It was like Pokémon. It was all-consuming and everywhere. And to a only very VERY slightly lesser degree, so was Batman and so was Ghostbusters. The three of them basically ruled the late 80s and early 90s. The Holy Trinity of the Turtle, the Bat, and the Holy Ghostbuster.

Ghostbusters 2016 has the "Ghost Corps" logo as well. So they've been wanting to turn Ghostbusters into a huge franchise since even before Afterlife. Also, it looks like Sony once again just couldn't resist the need to cram 15 characters and like 7 different plot lines into a single movie with Frozen Empire. Just like they did with Spiderman 3 and The Amazing Spiderman 2. And just like those other 2 movies, Frozen Empire suffered because of it.

NOTES: - McKenna Grace was only 12 or 13 in this movie. She CARRIES this movie. - The song 'Haunted House' over the credits was written and sung by McKenna Grace. It wasn't actually written for the movie at all. It was written about being stuck in the quarantine and breaking up with/losing someone. The song came out AFTER they made the movie, but the movie's release was delayed for SO LONG that they were then able to go back and use it as the credits song, where it sort of vaguely works as a song about Egon and Callie... - Afterlife doesn't reference Ghostbusters 2 MUCH, but: -- as Aaron noted, Ray's Occult is from Ghostbusters 2. -- Egon still has the pink psychomagnotheric slime possessed toaster in his kitchen. -- Jason Reitman confirmed that fans can assume that Egon's daughter, Callie Spengler, was already born and present in the background during Ghostbusters 2, but we just never saw her or heard references to her.

That toaster in Afterlife is actually the very same toaster they used in Ghostbusters 2 over 30 years ago, box and all. The truck Egon drives at the start also has Ivan Reitman's name and birth year on the back as well.

I find it awesome that they're even bringing back Walter Peck's character played by William Atherton in Frozen Empire. As much as an iconic actor from the 80's playing characters one just loves to hate, it's great that he's being given another moment to shine. But damn, do I miss Harold Ramis... I must say though, Afterlife was the most perfect send-off.

Ivo Shandor isn't just a random new character for the mining company backstory in this movie. Shandor was the architect of Dana's apartment in Ghostbusters 1, and the metal he mined from this mine is the reason her apartment building was a giant supernatural energy antenna and gateway for Gozer. Also, he was played by J.K Simmons. Gozer was played by Olivia Wilde. I think they're both uncredited in this movie?

The Gunner chair first appeared in the 2009 video game, which supports the idea that the game is also part of Ghostbusters canon. And the end always gets me. It could have been really awful or corny, but instead it is incredibly moving - a fitting tribute to both Ramis and Spengler. (Also, perhaps because he's transparent, but this is probably the first convincing use of CGI face recreation that I've seen).

The ending of this film is just perfect, hell, the whole film is a love letter to not just the fans, but the ghostbusters universe, the subtle musical cues are almost a character in and of themselves, the only flaw I can find in it is that Jeanine wasn’t there to say goodbye to Egon one last time, and if anyone deserved to, it was her I love the respect and care that this film shows to the original source material (the original two films) while still telling its own story, this is the way sequels/reboots *SHOULD* be done. when the original three ‘busters were talking to Egon’s ghost at the end, it could almost be seen as both the characters AND the actors sharing final words with both Egon Spengler AND Harold Ramis, given what had happened between them recently. And you can’t convince me otherwise that Ernie Hudson *WASNT* speaking from the heart when he said “but I will *ALWAYS* be a Ghostbuster…”

I've read (don't watch much TV) that Finn Wolfhound (son Trevor) dressed up as a Ghostbuster during one episode of Stranger Things. ... There was a blink and you'll miss it easter egg for Ant-Man: Gary peruses some Baskin-Robbins ice cream for a moment ("Baskin-Robbins always knows!"). Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is coming out in just a few days. Pet peeve from the trailer: There's been several ice ages, not just one. I liked that they didn't show the OG in any of the trailers, except a quick shot of Ray answering the phone. I wasn't sure any of them would appear. The ghostly appearance of Harold Ramis was another real surprise. And, yes, it got misty over here as well.

Kevin Spacey is fantastic as Bobby Darin. Spacey does his own singing for the film. Kate Bosworth plays Darins wife, Actress Sandra Dee. A great biopic from 2004. GB:Afterlife is proof positive (and hopefully, Frozen Empire here soon) that an old cult-classic can be revived and continued even long after its time...and done well. It's just the right blend of having what the first movie had, and having it's own thing. And not just the right balance of each...but blended together the right way. It respects what was before, without being shackled by it. It does something new, without shitting on where it came from. A lot of that can be chalked up to the fact that Ivan Reitman was on-set with his son who was directing this movie, every single day. And that the director of this, Jason Reitman, himself basically grew up on the sets of the first two Ghostbuster movies. But even so, this still proves that it CAN be done. Another movie I'd like to see get this kind of treatment is The Last Starfighter. Have the original movie remastered (not remade, just have the CG effects updated), and re-released in theatres...and do a sequel that tells the story hinted at by the end of the first movie. I bet that, if done right, it could be much, much more than a cult-classic, to a lot more people.

I would highly recommend you play the Ghostbusters the Video Game Remastered. It's actually the last time all four actors are together and Harold Ramis' actual last performance as Egon Spengler. According to Dan Aykroyd(Ray Stanz), the story is canon. It has multiple connection with this movie which I won't get into and also another OG character that makes an appearance.

Sadly Harold Ramis died, this film was a nice tribute to him

They used the actor who played the warden in The Shawshank Redemption as a stand in for Egon. Also the Revelations thing is a call back to the first movie as Ray quotes it when driving with Winston.

Great reaction I think part four me out either later this year or in 2025. It’s called Ghostbusters the frozen, frozen Kingdom or something all the kids are in it from afterlife and I think all the old guys are back in it too. Can’t wait to see that, what’s the real Ghostbusters? You can watch the other one if you want but it’s not as good as these. Thanks for the fun until next time.

Thanks for sharing your reaction. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is in theaters, but the DVD is scheduled for release in July. I appreciated the James Bond-style pre-credits adventure. James Bond started with an adventure before the main story. The "bigfoot" sequence at the start reminded me of the classic "Forbidden Planet" and the invisible creature--if you haven't watched that 1956 movie, I recommend it. But your review isn't on the movie that inspired Star Trek... I note that you didn't mention Ghostbusters: Answer the Call--a 2016 movie with outstanding cinematography but plagued with a poor script and mired in political messaging.

Great reactions on the Ghostbusters films. Since the new movies about to come out, you should do a reaction to the international trailer for Ghostbusters frozen Empire. Keep up the good work, the good vibes and most importantly keep up on the good movies.

Hi Amelia I'm glad that you got to see all 3 Ghostbusters. I only started watching you today and noticed the constant twitching of your hands. I am in a similar situation but I hope it's not as bad as Parkinson's and I hope you're doing okay.

Hi and thank you for your concern! I’m just a fidgety person and have a hard time sitting still. I’ve always been like that. With the repeated cuts on camera, it does kind of look like twitching, but no issues here :)

Terrible movie 🚫👎🚫 I recommend you watch 'Evolution (2001) that film is more of a Ghostbusters 3 than this new nonsense. Evolution was directed by the original. But some say Ghostbusters 3 is the video game cause 2016 , afterlife and the new frozen crap. A ruined franchise
