We have three Ameraucanas. One is elderly and blind, taken on from a friend as she was being picked on. She and her old lady Orpington friend now live a charmed life in their own coop and own fenced yard. The old lady is delightful. We also took on two more, at the age of about 3 plus months. We had hoped that they, and the third chicken we inherited, of the same age and an Austrolorp, would get along with the two old ladies but the Ameraucanas were bossy and shortly after their arrival, immediately started to pick on the two older ladies so they were moved to our larger coop with our four one plus year old Brahmas, including a rooster. This was the great equalizer. We find this breed flighty, aloof, definitely not interested in being picked up, not fond of eating out of our hand, but do very well with the larger Brahmas. They do well with the rooster as well. They have been pretty prolific egg layers ( not the old lady, who still tries though) until winter hit. We live at 8300 feet in Colorado and they have done very well at this altitude and climate. They are not clipped so they are very agile and can easily escape getting away from dogs, cats, etc. They have been wonderful additions to our flock but I would not seek the out again to purchase.

Hi. If you dont mind me making a little correction here: The 2 Mapuche breeds are "Kollonka" and "Ketro" ("Kintero" is a Chilean town). Id like you to repeat the info at minute 1:58-2:00, please (Mr Keller?...). Thank you.

Mine aren't purebred, but I can attest that they don't like the heat. Those muffs and beards are cute but not well suited for hot weather. That said, I haven't had to do too much intervention for the 2 I have, but I definitely would keep that in mind if you get the breed. I also got both types of temperments mentioned. Thyme is a sweet and friendly bird while Sage is skittish and a bit flighty (but still a very good girl). As I said though, mine aren't purebred so take what I say with a grain of salt, but I still felt my observations were worth sharing. I definitely would get them again though, even though Sage is skittish, both she and Thyme are pretty docile birds and get along well with my easter eggers. And they are striking birds, especially Sage who looks like a tiny falcon (from what I read, she's silver patterned) and Thyme is a gorgeous bird too with a beard that'd make a mountain man jealous. :3

Many years ago I ordered "Ameraucana" chicks from the local feed store who orders them from hatcheries. I still have some of them. I am now looking at ordering more from the same feed store. So I decided to google all these different breeds offered to see if I want to get a different breed this time,. I came across this video and I was shocked by the information that there are Easter Eggers being passed off as Ameraucanas. My chickens don't have the tuffs around their face like true Ameraucanas, but that's what I purchased according to the order list and it was spelled that way. This very reputable feed store again has "Ameraucanas" listed in the "rare breed" section of the order info for $3.65 (USD) each! Your video says they should be $20 (not sure if that's for hens or chicks). I wonder if the hatchery is selling them as Ameraucanas! I'm appalled!

Thanks for the video. Great info. I'm wondering if you could point me to a serious breeder. I have free-range chicken and this breed has always caught my attention. I'm in Cuba and this is not an existing breed as far as I know.

You failed to mention that 1 in approximately 100 Ameraucanas have a genetic defect resulting in cross beaks. There are about 3 to 4 specific breeds that produce variant hues of blueish eggs from light to dark. The Black Ameraucnas lay the darkest greenish-blue eggs and also carry this specific defective cross-beak or "scissor-beak" gene, which progressively gets worse as they mature.

Thanks for the information. I have spent 25 years in veterinary medicine and getting ready to get a few chickens. I am only use to dogs and cats and a few birds. I will keep this information on my list when I prepare to purchase my chicks.

When you say it "tolerates New York Winters fairly well," what part of NY? I live in the Binghamton area, and the winters here are very different than back down on Long Island. I was hoping to get a few of these in nid March and am curious.

If you check our channel we've done dozens of videos that aren't about chicken breeds, they pertain to chicken health, chicken coops, some quail, geese, raising different fowl together. Unless you are talking about touching on other farm animals that you can have on your homestead?
