Round Robin 1 & 2 of the Prada Cup had delivered an explosive start on the road to the America’s Cup. At the end of the opening stages, one team was up, another down and one in the middle. All three were doubtless left wondering what had happened to the form guide that had been established just before Christmas, as well as considering what the temporary loss of a team meant for the racing going forwards.
But for American Magic, the immediate task was to rebuild their boat and get back on the water - a massive task. American Magic’s skipper Terry Hutchinson explains what happened and what’s next for the team, Ainslie and Bruni give their views on the kind of crash that they all fear and Matt Sheahan looks back at a heart stopping three days.

Those first round robin races were in flukey light winds, AM showed in the last race that they have the speed. If they can get Patriot back in the water and performing to the same standard then they will definitely be competitive. The way that Terry has dealt with the capsize has been absolutely amazing, a credit to the team and his country.

It's a shame for team USA to be out of the race because of the mistake or misstep. But that's why you run the race, it's all part of the sport. I do miss the old America's cup selling racers, hull in the water. I mean hydrofoils are definitely cool and they take a whole different kind of thinking to get them working correctly and get the most out of. But I just prefer the old style racing yachts. When you get the yacht flying along with the wind at its back, just every aspect. I just love the way it looks.

It’s not just the hole. It’s the failure of the hull in all directions from the hole both laterally and transversely. You can see where the hull has failed by the ribbons on glass fibre hanging from the splits. But the hull repair might just be the easy bit, if you call repairing carbon fibre easy. The electronics are also shot and wiring is laid integrated into the hull’s structure. I hope they make it in time because the event would lose some of its sparkle with them.

Now the NZ team hit the reality of trying to formulate SailGP with the Americas cup to generate income for the series. The History of F1 Bernie Eccleston and the struggles they had are lessons to be learnt. The dash for cash and success will be a close race. We all love our dreams. Seeing seeing 10 boats hitting 50 knots in a thrilling race would be a sight to see.

The tack bear away they attempted would make sense in a conventional boat at slower speeds, but these AC75 beasts need more room to stabilize after a tack or gybe. The starboard mark would have been so much easier; no tack required and they were well above the layline, allowing space for a softer bear away. The waste of tacking (or gybing) at the mark is the extra boat lengths needed to stabilize before course correction.

I've been windsurfing for 40 years, this year a started foiling, the biggest difference is when things go wrong, the quickness of the crash is unbelievable, fast and hard. Going over the bars on the water is one thing, going over 3 ft off the water quite different. The concentration that is required is unreal, you have to manage the angle of attack 100% of the time, relax for a second and you are done. The problem is, when foiling, you don't feel the water, chop, boat waves, you just slice through, it feels so easy. But if the angle goes wrong, up or down and you don't correct, ouch. If the foil is bigger, it is actually harder, faster lift, more dynamics, less top end, which means you foil out more often if you get overpowered in a gust. When I watch these boats crank their turns like Formula One Cars it blows me away, their 75 ft long but turning faster then a laser. The fact that the foils can handle the stress and the load is just amazing. Capsizes are one danger, but a collision or a man overboard in water with another boat close by, the result would be just terrible.

Your last point is really important. I’ve seen port/starboards where the starboard boat has clearly altered course, but where no penalty was issued. I worry skippers with right of way will stand on further to prove their case, with disastrous effect.

It is a real shame that there isn't another team in the event. The structure of this three way competition is risible. In a sporting sense, four weekends of round robins without the semi-final final would be more equitable. But fair might not be box-office, round robins could be all over halfway through. What other competition has ever had a competitor score no points, withdraw from the remaining half of the competition and be at no more of a disadvantage than the team in second place? It is arguable that the round robin winner might be disadvantaged in the final, by virtue of having fewer races under their belt.

Mechanically and Structurally we know what happened, thankfully and incredibly no-one was hurt. but the "elephant in the room" (or on the water in this instance) was a terrible tactical decision to round the right hand mark particularly going as fast as they were and admittedly a difficult maneuver at best, instead of staying on course and rounding theopposite mark pointing them towards the left hand favored side of the course and blasting towards home. They had a huge lead over Prada even if less winds were around the other mark. I know hindsight is easy but even when they were actually doing all this I couldn't believe my eyes! If there actually are more than one tactician aboard AM, that is a management error, only one is necessary. Hopefully American Magic will be repaired in time for the next RR and the crew after doing some sourly needed soul searching will be ready in sail and win.....GO AMERICAN MAGIC!
@daemn42
@daemn42 3 жыл бұрын
FWIW, they rounded the *left* mark, not right, specifically to stay on the left side of the course where all the wind was (multiple people were talking about it being a "one track" course). Taking the right mark into decreasing wind would have required an immediate jibe to get them back over to the left side of the course where the wind was. Note also that Prada made the same turn to the left as American Magic. They just didn't initiate the bear away after they saw what happened to AM caught by a 23+ knot gust, and purposely ran straight out of bounds. So what's wrong with right turn followed by a jibe? Not long before this rounding, one of the other crew stated on comms, that the wind was "very light" around the right mark. Wind was only 9 knots at the bottom of the course and had been only 12 knots 40 seconds before the turn, so the skipper interpreted "very light" as possibly less than 9 knots with potential to drop off the foils (which would mean an instant loss if Prada could stay on foils in the strong pressure), so he chose the left mark despite warnings that it would be a "real hard maneuver". If we assume that getting swatted down by the wind gust was not inevitable, I think their error was simply rushing from a tack (point where boat speed is lowest at 25knots) straight into a bear away (point where pressure on the sail and acceleration is highest) with nothing in between. It's possible that had they tacked and then waited a couple seconds more to regain any speed lost in the tack, before attempting to bear away they could have absorbed the gust, or at least recognized it coming before bearing away directly into it. But then again, sometimes getting turned downwind ASAP is the best way to deal with increasing pressure (for any boat that sails faster than the wind speed) so who knows. The goal was to win the race, not to avoid the wind.

@@daemn42 this ☝️Also it’s easy to say they shouldn’t have turned down so fast but at that speed it’s only seconds to the boundary. Split second timing and it probably wasn’t the helm’s job to release the runner.

@@daemn42 O.K. I mistakenly said the right hand mark instead of left hand. You know what I meant. Your analysis shows sailing knowledge and is worthy of consideration, however I stand by my point, why risk it when one is substantially ahead, going for a win but then pursuing an admittedly risky maneuver and using a football term causing an "unforced error". I believe this mishap will be talked about and debated on for years. Good Sailing.... Go American Magic.
