"Williams was really America's first individualist, the first contradictor of authority, the first rebel," explains John M. Barry, author of Roger Williams and The Creation of the American Soul: Church, State, and the Birth of Liberty. While best known as the founder of Rhode Island and for being a leading proponent of a "wall of separation" between church and state, Barry argues that Williams' imprint on America is deeper than most recognize. "When I started writing the book I quickly realized that I was not simply writing about the emergence of the idea of religious liberty, but liberty itself."
Barry sat down with ReasonTV's Nick Gillespie to discuss the book, the enduring lessons of Roger Williams' life, and why he is not yet a household name.
About 9:10 minutes.
Cameras by Meredith Bragg and Jim Epstein. Edited by Meredith Bragg.
Barry is the author of numerous books, including The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History and Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How it Changed America.

I recently discovered Roger Williams is my 11th Great Grandfather...leading me to rediscover the man well beyond the brief mention I received as a student of history. Stunning, and so very relevant to understanding a potential path forward for this country at this very moment in time.

Williams has been a hero of mine since childhood. He also founded the American Baptist church based on the principle of our one-to-one relationship with God with no intercessors. Clergy were pastors/sheperds there to guide not dictate. A far cry from today's southern "Baptist" fraud. And he was a trusted friend of the Indians.

the interview leaves out the fact that he was a polymath, recognized as a teenager as exceptionally brilliant, and went to Charterhouse School, and Cambridge University, was an accomplished linquised, and very young was mentored by the Chief Justice Coke, of England, and knew King James I......before he and his wife escaped to Massachusetts. Astonishing man. The books is really good, we read it on Kindle. Not enough about the fact that he was a Biblical scholar, and how the Bible was key in shaping his views.

Born and raised in Rhode Island, I realized that my state has the most positive history than any other location on earth. Churches don't dominate the skyline and government owns little land here (because of its size.) But what you can find are textile mills and plenty of small businesses competing to sell the most clam chowder! providence may have crappy roads and crime today (...wonder why) but it's past is ripe with liberty.

I am one of the modern descendants of Roger Williams. I remember doing a school travel agency project in 5th grade where you had to make a state/location sound very interesting to travel. As I was the last person to choose a state, I randomly chose Rhode Island since it was a small state, me believing there wasn't much to point out. When I asked my dad for help, it was then that he told me of my ancestor. I got an A, mostly because I am related to a historic figure.

Did you learn he was opposed to the taking of native land and tried to pass legislation abolishing slavery along with establishing the first society on the planet based on separation of religion and civil affairs, individual soul liberty (including anti-Christians and freedom of expression? If you did, you are lucky. Those facts basically destroy the, "that's just the way things were back then", a certain ideology uses to justify its past.

Separation of church and state is an old baptist doctrine of keeping Government out of the church but is has nothing to do with Christian Values influencing the Government. As a baptist who clings to church and state seperation as a sacred doctrine (of which it is) this is not what it meant. Rhode Island and the U.S. Federal Government were intended to be Christian Governments based on the premise that the Baptist principle of church and state was enforced by the first ammendment. The Decleration Mentions God 4 times, the treaty of paris mentions the holy trinity, the prayer proclimations were self-explainingly christian, and the constitution was founded on Biblical principles.

Lesa: By rhe time that Roger made it to London in 1643, King Charles has exited London due to the English Civil Wars. Parliament was running the country. Roger also knew all the men on the committee that approved the charter, because he met them all when he worked for the Mashams. Thier home was the cnter of the revolution.

Sorry about the confusion. Yes, Charles I di dnot sign the charter of 1644. He was not in London, and the Parliament and he were at war. The 1663 charter signed by Charles II was a bit of a hoax. Charles was a closet Catholic, so any attempt that he made to make things easier for protestants, were attempts to help Catholics. He had signed an agreement with the French King that in exchange for financial gifts, Charles would convert to Catholicism, and 20,000 Frtnch soldiers would come to England to help Charles make the country Catholic again.

I love the puritans but they were far away from the teachings of the Lord Jesus and the New Testament long before this great man others suffered for liberty of conscience such as the Anabaptists and other sects. But let us keep in mind Williams was not intetested in a purely secular government but was in favor of what was eventually adopted by our Founding fathers. That Christian morals and biblical erhics such as the ten commandments should be the foundation of good government and civil society. Williams fully believed in the evangelism of non believers not a forced compliance. That is the difference between Williams and John Cotton for example. Williams was no godless secularist. He dissaproved of making lets say the Trinity a matter of law and those who denied this or taught otherwise should not be subject to crimimal prosecution or death for heresy as was the case in Geneva with Miguel Servetus. So this is somewhat misleading and not addressed properly.

Williams was a rebel, because he had the New England colonies to rebel against. He took a page from the Dutch, whose entire colony of New Netherland was a secular, non-monarchical society. I'll take Adriaen van der Donck.

@@elijahmelendez9864 good question. Roger’s goal was to create a new Christianity. Experts laugh at me about this or they get angry. One said that Roger never formed a new structure for Christianity. The fact is that since all human groups are corrupted, there was no need for denominations, bishops, archbishops, or any other organization. Roger’s Christianity needed few things: the believer and the Bible!!! That is all! Colleges and universities are not needed. The Covenants of Faith And Works are not needed because they were just ways to seek salvation. Yes, the paid ministers of Roger’s times were ALL hierlings and “not of Christ.” People visiting Rhode Island could not tell who were the ministers. There would be no Apostolic Commission. No tribal rites and activities. His vision was a gift which was intentionally censored and hidden away. I am the only person who has figured this out,and it is clear to me that this censoring was done with a vicious rejection of Roger. This is why he is on the Protestant Wall in Austria. Thanks for asking
