Gary, Indiana is one of the saddest, most hopeless cities I've ever seen. It looks like a city from Fallout and everyone who lives there has pretty much given up. My grandmother has lived there since the 1960's and refuses to move. We fly there once a year to visit her and stay for about a week. If it wasn't for the fact that Chicago was so close we would've stopped going years ago.

Back in May of 1991 while in college I was working a delivery truck for a animal feed supplier. We had to make deliveries to the NYPD horse divisions. As we were coming home, about 2pm in the afternoon we drove through Harlem into Washington heights. I was shocked at how many young ghettos were hanging out on the street in groups just drinking. The driver, a pretty cool cat said to me look at America’s future. 30 years later it’s gotten way way worse. When I took a job as a teacher in the inner city schools of NYC I saw on a regular basis pregnant 12, 13 and 14 girls. Not just a few, quite a lot. I just began thinking it’s really over isn’t it.
