I Went To The Worst Ghettos In The United States: Part Two

Parts of America are falling apart literally before our eyes.
Now I’ve seen a lot of this country. I go out of my way to see bad things because that’s what you KZfaq people want. And a lot of the rundown cities I’ve seen are places most people don’t want to go into.
You can call em ghettos if you want, although that word might be a little strong. But every place I’m going to show you has large parts of town that are poor, dangerous and rundown. Many have been all but abandoned.
I did a previous video on this, but I’ve been to a lot more places now.
I think it’s important for us to see what’s happening to our communities. If we don’t know about these tragedies, how do we fix em? And for a lot of us, looking at this puts our own lives into perspective.
As we drive through these areas, you'll notice many of the streets are empty. Sometimes the scariest movies are when you don't see the monster at all.

Im jamaican, we have our ghettos in the cities, but living in the countryside in our small homes we are quite comfortable. Most of us are doing subsistence farming and living a healthy lifestyle with our lush greenery. Its not just about the almighty dollar and fast cars. Our warm sunshine, beautiful beaches and nature in general, makes us happy.

The reality is in a country like Jamaica where people are able to grow food nobody's starving there. I've had three trips to the Philippines in the past year and a half. Same thing nobody's starving to death from the Philippines. People can grow vegetables and fruit. But the reality is is 1/3 of the world lives in abject poverty.

The world has seen great empires; Ancient Greek, the Roman empire, British empire, and one thing caused the collapse of all these empires, huge Armies. The desire to maintain dominance is what has brought about the collapse of these great empires, and America has followed the same path. Armies do not build economies, they drain economies, what you bare witness to is the beginning of the end, and just as the British did in the past, a few years from now Americans will realize that the one thing they take such great pride in, is the thing that has brought about the collapse of their beloved nation.

@@cody4916 it’s not a biological thing it’s a education and cultural problem. Black people were pushed to ghettos during segregation. The people grew up in job lacking, poverty stricken, drugs pumped by the government and they had no desire to further their education or aim for higher jobs because they weren’t accepted in higher society and over time this became a cycle of violence and poverty. It’s not a black people problem there’s not a special gene that makes them violent it’s just that majority of them are born into cycles in ghettos and only few can break that cycle. The ghettos are dangerous because they’re poor not because they’re black.

I spent a summer working on the Hurricane Katrina recovery. I worked mostly in the New Orleans ninth ward. We demolished a lot of houses but I can safely say that most of them needed demolishing before Hurricane Katrina. I was very careful to get out of there before dark. And I ALWAYS had my little friend with me. Tucked down between the seats. And when I had to drive through Acres Home subdivision in Houston I would never stop at red lights at night. Carjacking was a sport there.

You must have a decent system of law enforcement. Some cities in the US are lacking in leadership and some mayors and some prosecutors have been known to restrict the enforcement of the law in some special cases. During a riot in Baltimore a mob was looting a shoe store. A bystander asked one of the policemen why they weren't doing anything and was told to ask the mayor. These cities are almost exclusively cities with Democrat leadership. Apparently we are still a work in progress. @@peterkoller3761

I drove a truck 24 years. One of the most expensive toll roads and one of the worst maintained is the Pennsylvania Turnpike . The high tolls are supposed to go toward keeping the toll road well repaired. When I mentioned this to a local he said "Look at the streets where the politicians live. That's where the toll $$ goes. Think that's where part of the capitalism blame comes from. Rich people usually do very well with capitalism and they don't get that wealthy without being a shitty person. A shitty person is the greedy capitalist that doesn't give a shit about the people making them the money as they'll just abandon them when the profits dry up. They made their money, bought their legislators, and will only do what is best for them to keep their wealth going. These type of people will not be satisfied with $1 billion in profits per year if they can pack up shop and double or triple that profit in some other country they can shit all over and abandon. This is basically what capitalism leads to in the end and that perhaps maybe a little bit of capitalism, little bit of socialism, little bit of whatever-else-ism should be considered because clearly what we have only works if you're the one on top.

I grew up in East Oakland and it wasn't bad when I was a kid, I'm now 60. We lived in the ghetto but my mother always told us that the ghetto was outside of her door and we were not allowed to possess a "ghetto" mentality. I attended the best high school in the ghetto but it was a private school, Bishop O'Dowd, at ten we attended the largest church, Allen Temple. I believe we turned out well because of all of the above AND because my parents were highly educated and believe in the power of prayer. NOW, you couldn't pay me to enter the city limits! I moved out of Oakland to the new city of Antioch which was great for 20 years but now that city is not safe. The same people from Oakland, San Francisco, Richmond, etc., have moved there and many have brought inner city problems with them. Add that to a corrupt police department and poor urban planning and I believe it is placing us on the prescipise of history repeating itself. I believe all cities must evolve with the times.

This kind of video is very important, because it shows a dimension of the United States that may not be well-known to both outsiders and to Americans, themselves. One thing that strikes me is the spatial structure of poverty of cities in the United States. Unlike in many developing world cities, where poverty is often characterized by density and crowding, and in fact, a high level of activity (including economic activitiy, such as selling something), in the United States urban poverty is characterized by low density and very low levels of (especially economic) activity. There is a huge wealth of underutlized space and structures that could seemingly be renovated and used. The problem is not one of lack of wealth in the country, obviously. The problem is a society that is sick (in these slum areas I imagine that there are extreme levels of social problems). I can imagine some people in developing world countries thinking that the areas shown don't look so horrible...there's even plenty of space to grow food! The problem is a "sick" population with no easy way out.

@@308pof I wish that where true. A lot of towns in California only offer lower paying jobs. San Luis Obispo is a great example. It's one of the most expensive small metropolitan areas in the country, yet most of the jobs are hospitality and retail. There's people who live there where a household of two holds 4-6 jobs just to keep a roof over their heads. A lot of the housing was bought up by rich people from the bay area or Los Angeles and are used as vacation rentals or just sit empty for when they decide to have their own vacation, and that's dwindled the housing supply. SLO isn't the only place this is happening, either. Mendocino is seeing it, Tahoe is seeing it, Truckee, the little towns in the gold country, and along the coast. Their economy is based almost wholely on tourism to save them, but now it's become so excessive that it's starting to cause a decline because there is little to housing and what housing is left is so expensive that it's too expensive for the people who work in the industry that keeps those places afloat. It's absolutely insane.

What a great opportunity to start vocational training in high schools. Let the kids learn how to renovate the rundown houses, sell them to the poor for a reasonable price if they put in some sweat equity in order to buy it. The kids learn a skill that will lead to a good job and people get to own a house of their own. Its a fact that if you own something you take much better care of it than if you are renting.

I am in a deep shock. Obviously I have known that US struggles a lot right now and, lets say, rural America does not look good, but in a short time I saw some great yt videos from Appaliachia area and this one and to be honest, did not know that it all went so bad. The issues with drugs, poverty, violence, really low level of quality of infrastructure..everything looks more like a third world country to be honest. I am of course aware, that there is plenty of rich and beautiful places in US, but the gap between those worlds is terrifying. Personally, I live in +500k inhabitants city in Poland (city of Poznań) and here we have nothing what looks even slightly close to those places from the video, it would be really hard to find even a similar street in my country, in that condition, with such problems. I think that even during communism and overwhelming poverty that was that time we wouldn't be able to see such a degeneration. It is really scary, hopefully America find a way out, I hold my thumbs for you!

I mean... for as much of a stereotype as it is, and as much as I myself hate to admit it, Africa is a pretty poor place. Sure there are rich areas, but they're rather few and far in between and heavily outweighed by the poor ones. That being said though, I find it pretty ironic for how much Americans love perpetuating that statement to the absolute bone, only to end up becoming that statement in the years to come. It's kinda hilarious tbh. Like, who are you to be calling people "poor" and "needing help" when you're on your way to becoming in a similar state yourself?

Things were better back then especially if you have social capital. Poor folks tend to live around other poor folks...and college cost way more than it did twenty years ago and schools in poor areas tend to be grossly underfunded, therefore that means that even the smartest and most ambitious kid from undeserved areas tend to fall behind academically so once they get to college, they will have to take remedial level math and science, which means more time in school along with extra student loans to take out which leads to more dept and more poverty. Generational Poverty is not easy to escape.

I live in Johannesburg South Africa, and I am so utterly shocked at the degradation of so many parts of America with such dire poverty. However, when you compare these places to the "gawd awful slums of third-world capitals" (2:15 seconds) this is NOT the state of many capitals in Africa, I assure you. I've lived and worked in many African countries and been through many capitals - Windhoek in Namibia, Nairobi in Kenya, Gaborone in Botswana, Accra in Ghana, Maseru in Lesotho, Mbabane in Eswatini (previously called Swaziland) and Khartoum in Sudan, and while Africa does have poverty, it is not the same type of poverty as reflected in these ghettos in America. America is a prosperous first-world country, to my understanding, which makes this video even more shocking to me. We have some exceptionally fine and even affluent capitals in Africa. Granted, there are some areas within the capitals that may be more poverty-stricken and have some ghetto quality aspects to them, but they are mostly on the outskirts of the city, but some are also within the city limits too, like Kibera, which is the largest slum in Nairobi, and the largest urban slum in Africa. But the rest of the capitals themselves would rival many cities in America in terms of comparable infrastructure, amenities, transport, policing, and commercial activity. Africa isn't all about "gawd awful slums". America has a lot of wealth, with many state budgets being bigger than the entire GDP of some African countries, like, California. So why you have such terrible ghettos and poverty in so many places is beyond me. It's just so sad to see this in America, a country I used to admire. I will say this though, the poverty in Africa is different to what I see in America. In America, it is a Soul-destroying despair of drug addiction, absent fathers and mental health issues that are more prevalent, whereas, in Africa, it's about food and access to amenities, like clean drinking water in many cases. And while Africa does have extreme poverty in many places, there is still ambition and a desire to get out of the poverty cycle, and hope and striving for a better life. I sense, sadly, that in America this hope, and inclination is not there, their hope has died. But thank you for an excellent expose of this tragedy, your guest had some very valid points, it was informative to listen to him.

Agree! What's even sadder, in my opinion, is the money we waste, for example, on enormous salaries for sports players and some entertainment figures. Absolute millions upon millions, while others starve or die due to poor/nonexistent health care. It's disturbing. Finland is doing a great job supporting their homeless and addicted. There is a youtube video about it. The US needs to follow that same program which, for example, takes advantage of old and disused apartment buildings to create free or affordable housing. The problem is these issues aren't pretty, or fun, or even of interest to most Americans (and our politicians) to bother finding solutions. We're a very self-centered culture, quite different from yours. Those of us (like you and I) who do care are, sadly, in the minority. Thanks for your very informative comment!

I grew up in San Francisco. I still live in the bay area. Homelessness is egg hunt located issue especially in the bay area. I’m speaking from experience. I was hospitalized and one of the patients in the next room was going to be discharged. I heard them talking they were a part of the unhoused. This patient was offered 28 days in a sober living facility where they would be eligible for transitional housing for up to 18 months. The patient refused. I’ve heard medical staff begging them to please take it vantage of the offer given. That patient said they would not take it. They did not want to stop drinking, they didn’t want to be told what to do and returned to the street in a downpour. We were in the middle of one of our biggest winter storms and they chose to be out in the elements. During Covid there was this big push to get everyone off the streets and into a shelter, whether it be a homeless shelter or a hotel, an SRO, etc. Some homeless people went into hiding to keep from being “swept up “so again I don’t know what the answer is People with a lot more education and experience. Then I have have tried unsuccessfully to tackle this problem. So I don’t pretend to have answers. As for Oakland… That’s a whole other conversation. Rest in peace athletics.

I guess I realized the problem when this reminded me of home. I think that's why I feel so much peace in deserted or desolate areas. I've always liked the open run-down buildings taken over by nature. I used to live by a railroad track and the train would pass by every few times. Open deserted parking lots, abandoned shopping centers, and meadows full of weeds. It was always mainly silent with birds here and there. Honestly, though, I wish I could go back without the danger, but with the way America's going, we'll be in the dystopian apocalypse I've dreamed of sooner than later.😅

One of them inhabited by females on their own. Whole streets with empty shops, gas stations and diners and wharehouses all starting to collapse. How come that nation paid people to walk about on a moon. Why are they staring into space trying to find 'life' when they cant even manage what they have. Do you think any distant civilisation would tolerate the people here// Why are you assuming they would be like you. Foir instabncxer whats all this about Police killing a 1000 people a yr. They dont seem to do that to the corrupt. In UK we are experiencing Police attacks too who are sent on behalf of religion. They told us that the evidence we gathered during 12 yrs traipse round vCent London accompanied by victims cannot be revealed to public. They also told us that theres no such thing as 'Natural Talent'. theres only what your teacher teaches. That attitude killed millions US Nativ Americans and Germany did same to tribes in Africa. This is the 3rd attaxck we have experienced after doing state of the art work on so called incurable clients sent to us by Health system. They had recd anything up to 22 yrs 'treatment' They needed six hours. One of them would have died that nite had we not broken in to get to her. We wewre then told to stop the work which was threatening establ jobs so around 12-15 000 died and the issues covered up by Local Govt. Police. HM Coroners. HM Courts. HM Psychiatry Charities. Press. 17 universities who are in league with Int drug firms. f-book and Twitter destroyed all our mails and all websites also disappeared. We have no access to Parliament or Law or Health or Welfare. We are woriied anbout dying cos this place coulds be ransacked by Police and the public would do nothing. We are a Jewish Family who came to UK to escape the very activities going on in UK. We came here with two suitcases and 80 yrs old granma. we were washing up dishes in hotel and taking scraps food home. no one offered any help. We left behind jobs in the Law System. Now lets think about this site. People are goin around filming other peoples misery so what the persons criteria. Why dont they go raise hell at the areas + Go see Political representative for those areas. Why dont they stop and knock at all the doors to see if the folks need food por help with property maintenance. Why are people sitting watching all this and doing nothing. Is it becauase the victims aree not 'relatives' If so you need waking up. No change in 10.000 yrs. Stop the deception. 5000 comments have not changed anything. The UK and Europe are also horrific. The EEC has told us that nothing can be done about corruption or the attacks on us made by Police and violent threats by US Embassy. Maybe we should try to get out of here urgent before we end up dead. The natives that the US killed knew how to survive. You dont. You killed most them wheres the guilt we dont see any.

You are the FIRST person who does this type of expose to include indigenous communities - there is no Indigenous Lives Matter movement and, if there were, it would get zero media attention. Thank you!

Some of these houses look full of potential and are on a par with many affluent areas in the UK - the difference is the abandonment and disrepair which is not tolerated here. Space in Western Europe is more of a premium too so decaying areas are quickly cleared. One sad thing is that in most blocs there seem to be houses here and there with manicured gardens and well-maintained buildings. Point is well-made and taken that the wide open spaces are harder to service.
