The perforations down the center and along towards the top and bottom of the packages (about maybe 3/8" from the top and bottom front edges of the boxes) were billed during their heyday of the early-50's through the mid-70's as convenient "bowls" (from what I remember, only those cereals made by the Kellogg company at that time could be this easily made into what were called the trademarked "Kel-Bowl-Pak"), for a country much more mobile than ever before, in post-WW II America. The cereals could be enjoyed with a minimum of cleanup, say on camping trips for example, and made much larger "home-sized' boxes of the cereal having to be packed in often times very limited spaces in backpacks and vehicles a welcome thing of the past, while everyone could still have their favorite breakfast cereals travel with them. The perforations would be carefully cut to the pre-determined lengths down the center and along the top and bottom perforated lines (including the bag which contained the cereal), and a rectangular leak-proof "bowl" (providing the perforations and cereal bag were cut carefully) would be created, and then simply thrown away after the cereal was enjoyed (before the age of recycling), rather than a separate bowl having to be packed and washed each day of a trip.

Yep. I remember getting a steak knife and cutting the H in the front of the box every morning before school. You slice down the middle of the front of the box to cut through the cardboard and plastic bag, then cut the top and bottom so the 2 front halves fold out and make your bowl. Pour in milk and eat.

I prefer dry cereal. I don't really like milk and when it's dry I can just eat it with my hands, like granola or trail mix, while doing other things. As far as the kind of cereal, I was diagnosed with Celiac's last year which limits my options so I mostly just stick with Rice/Corn Chex and Crispix.

I used to absolutely love Koko Krunch and Honey Stars as a kid. They're both Nestle cereals and I ate a LOT of them. I absolutely DESPISED fruit loops. My mom bought it once- never ate them after the first spoonful, and that box lasted FOREVER because no one was eating it lol. Ah, childhood. Also, I only added maybe like two tablespoons of milk to the bowl. Just enough to coat the cereal and make it a bit wet, because I DESPISED soggy cereal. But if there's any milk leftover I always drink it, because I love milk.

I loved the corn pops as a kid. Applejacks wasn't green and pink but just beige with fake apple flakes on them. Frosted flakes my Mom would not buy as she thought it had too much sugar on it. When I did get them at friends houses I actually thought they tasted metallic so I never got into them. There were so many sweet cereals like Honeycomb that I just loved. Sugar crisp was also really delicious. The best part of Captain Crunch was sucking the milk through the airy crunchy squarea. Your tongue and the roof of your mouth would get really torn up. Never got into the berries. Good times.

We used to open the cardboard boxes on their sides where I think they're now perforated, open them up, cut open the cereal bag and add milk right into it, the box served as a sort of bowl to keep the cereal staying put! It was always a treat to get the little boxes, though, we rarely had them because they were so much more expensive!

I eat cereal fast too because I prefer it crunchy! Like some others have said, I remember taking a steak knife and cutting the "H" into the side of the box, through the wax paper bag inside, to create the sometimes uncooperative "bowl". I'm 49 - when I was a kid Corn Pops were called Sugar Pops. A lot of cereals that had sugar in their names (ex, Sugar Smacks) changed in the late 70s or 80s to try to sound healthier.

My favourite cereals were "Fruitloops" and "Trio". In my days Huey, Dewey, and Louie were on the box. And i ate my cereals a little bit soggy. Like the middleway, not crunchy but not totally soggy, just... yeah a little bit :) Sometimes im still eating cereals but prefer "Cookiecrisps" o "Honeyloops"

+hs loc I apologize for butting in, but Frosted Cornflakes are sweet. Just Cornflakes aren't. They have 2 g per cup vs 10 g for Frosted. Originally they were Sugar Frosted, but parents complained. My grandmother and mother would only buy plain. Which only made me add sugar. LOTS of sugar. I'd wait until they were out of the room to chug the milk since it hadn't dissolved, and was very noticable. They thought I was a good kid, all the while I was anything but. 😉

You can add the milk right into the little box cereal! You just have to take a knife or scissor and cut along the perforated lines of the front of the box, making sure to cut through the bag holding the cereal in the same shape, then pull back the edges and you've got a little bowl! We would get those little eight packs of cereal for camping when I was a kid and it was the only time my mom would buy the sugary ones. Love all that you do Emmy!

We have a few of these in Sweden. I grew up with the frosted flakes and cocoa krispies especially. I usually had them with filmjölk though, which is a type of soured milk kind of like yoghurt. It's runnier in consistency than yoghurt but thicker than milk, and pretty sour, something which goes well with super sweet cereals.

The perforations on the boxes were for using the box as a bowl. I vaguely recall using a knife to cut along the perforations, opening up the package and pouring in milk. It was messy so we usually used a bowl. My favorite cereal was shredded wheat. It still is, followed by sugar Frosted Flakes with milk, and Corn Pops straight out of the box.

If you open the box from the front top to bottom at the perforation and slice the plastic wrapping, you can make a cereal bowl by pouring the milk into the opening. The mascot for Lucky Charms is Sir Charms, and originally called L.C. Leprechaun while the mascot for Honey Nut Cheerios is Buzz.

Funny fact : in Europe frost flakes are called Frosties, cocoa crispies are called choco pops and we have none of the coloured/fruity cereals which isn't a bad thing in my opinion. I time to time crave for some cereals and when I do, it's usually for honey ones and/or unsweetened. What we have a lot are tiny little cookies (super tiny and very dry) that we eat in a bowl with milk, just like cereals. Nestlé has a lot variety of cereals like nesquick, chocapic, lion, crunch, chokella, Kellogg's has has a new range called tresors they were related to the Smaks variety but they changed it. They are tiny cereal pillows (corn, oat, wheat base) filled with different chocolate fillings, I hate them because they are way too salty.

I am in Sweden, when I grew up, we didnt have here brightly coloured , high sugared version of cereal, to get Frosties in on the Swedish market they had to do a low sugar version. I have tasted American ones and they are much sweeter. I used to eat none sweeten cereal like most people did and sweeten where for special occasion . Once a year I used to get Smack or Captain crunch, a whole box to eat by my self, I was in heaven for 3 days and then missed my porridge. I come from a country who loves fil ( a soured milk) and cereal or porridge in the morning, I belong to the porridge people, a bowl or rye or barley porridge with lingon jam andd I'm happy.

I never ate the sugary cereals as a kid, but my dad would always get a box of Capt. Crunch for his birthday. Now, however, I have tried a lot of them. My favs are Capt. Crunch and Golden Grahams. I don't eat them often now, but when I do get a craving I usually have a bowl as desert, like I would ice cream, because they are so sweet. A little goes a long way! Oh, and I too eat cereal with almond milk, the vanilla kind is the best. It also makes really good instant hot chocolate and really good coffee creamer for my vanilla lates!

Back when I was still living in the Philippines, I used to eat "KoKo Krunch" before going to my elemenary school in the morning. Its like Coco pebbles but crunchier. And as I remembered, it was not too sweet at all unlike Captain Crunch and Cinnamon Toast (favorite as of right now), it was just right. It could be the best cereal back then and maybe now still. I miss it a lot. I love eating my cereal between half crunchy and half soggy, so I leave the it in milk for awhile.

In Australia we don't get most of these. We have fruit loops, Cheerios, and coco pops. I haven't seen Frosted Flakes in ages. And the perforated edges means you can open up the sides, open the lil bag and use that as a bowl. You'll find that the side of the bag will easily pull away and open for that reason. Means when you're on holiday or camping you don't need to make dishes.

In Australia, we usually had Sanitarium Weet-bix or Kellogg's Corn Flakes. Sugary cereals (mainly Froot Loops) were reserved for special occasions like Easter or Christmas.

We eat cereal with yoghurt or filmjölk, sometimes milk. Usually not coloured with tons of added sugar and artificial flavouring, but more natural. Often made from oat, rye, barley, corn and sometimes rice. There's usually a version with freeze dried berries. The ones for kids often have honey or chocolate and feel "half american" in their marketing

Corn Pops remind me of when one of people's first 'breakfast cereals' was leftover popcorn from the night before, with milk poured over the to make a kind of porridge. My grandparents used to have that when they were children.

I always keep a box of Cap'n Crunch Crunch Berries (or Ooops! All Berries!) in my pantry. I do also still like Froot Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Cap'n Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch, Frosted Cheerios, but the Crunch Berries and Frosted Mini-Wheats are the only sugared cereals I regularly stock at home. And for non-sugared cereals, I love Grape-Nuts (though I add sugar)...and used to really like puffed rice cereal.

I used to spend so much of my college meal plan on those little cereal cups, usually Chex or plain Corn Flakes. Captain Crunch is my favorite sugar cereal, no crunch berries. The runner up is Fruity Pebbles. I used to HATE when my Mom would buy Kix, and I'm still convinced that they're secretly packing peanuts. But nowadays I usually have toast and coffee, sometimes a bagel. Bananas are the only fruit I can stand in the morning, don't know why.

I didn't eat cereal for many years until a couple of month ago I got a craving. I first went with plain Cheerios, almond or soy milk and a sliced banana...I would eat that for breakfast and sometimes dinner. I found it's a quick and easy meal so I've stuck with it. Last week I ordered all different cereals from Walmart.com (free shipping with 50 dollar order) and got 50 dollars worth of all kinds of cereals. So far we've eaten Corn Pops and Honey Nut Cheerios. Got some regular Cap'nCrunch, Frosted Shredded Mini Wheat, AllBran Branbuds, Frosted Flakes, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Pebbles, HoneyComb, Cracklin Oat Bran, Shredded Wheat Honey Nut Spoon Size, Honey Bunches of Oats With Crispy Almonds. I've gotten 2 of some kinds that I think we would like. They are big boxes and cost about 3-plus dollars each. Not bad for emergency meals.

When I was a child, we rarely had cereal for breakfast. It was usually toast or rolls with something on it (often enough chocolate spread). Occasionally, at my sister's and her boys', we'd have some chocolatey stuff like Nesquik, Kellogg's Chocos (or a copy) or Kellogg's Smacks (or a copy). Especially the last one was quite popular with my mum for a while and a 'breakfast cereal phase' kind of started. Then we tried Kellogg's Crunchy Nuts and copies thereof and slowly the phase kind of ended. My sister and I were having Knuspermuesli (think caramellized oatmeal with little rice puffs, nuts and sometimes chocolate in it) from time to time, but we went back to having just toast or rolls. Nowadays my typical breakfast is proats (oatmeal with whey and hot water), or sometimes scrambled eggs with ham.

The perforated box is so you can eat it straight out of the box, like a bowl! As a kid, my parents always bought the fun pack when we went camping, and you just cut open the bag inside, and pour the milk right in for less dishes!

When I was a kid ( a LONG time ago), I would split the Fun Packs down the middle and pour the milk directly into the box, and eat them like that - right out of the box. That's what made them "fun"! Also, it is beyond me why anyone would ever give you a thumbs down.

My favorite cereals are count chocoula, cinnamon toast crunch, special k with red berries, rice crispies, and pops. I like cereal not to be soggy but if it is a little then it's ok. I also like to eat corn flakes with apple sauce. Also, anyone else wish the monster cereals were still offered year round? (the monster cereals are count chocoula, boo berry, and fraken berry and are only offered around Halloween now but were year round until I was about 10 or 11.)

The perforation is actually so the box can be turned into a bowl by opening the side of the box and then opening the cereal through the elongated seam on the bag so it can hold milk. Came in handy when we picked them up at hotels on trips!

I had a cat who loved cereal and milk - every breakfast time, I had to leave some in my bowl so he could finish it off. His favourites were cornflakes (unsweetened, I've never liked putting sugar on my cereal) and muesli. And I had a dog who loved a bowl of porridge on winter mornings, or just some milk in the summer - he would sit and stare at the fridge until he had his breakfast in front of him :)

The perforation on the front of the box is meant to be opened like doors along with the bag inside when the box is set flat on the table. This creates a disposable bowl that you can eat the cereal out of while you're on the go (school lunch, traveling, etc...). The bag would do a good job of holding milk in it if you wanted, so you'd get a nice lil bowl of cereal without having to worry about the bowl! The last time I had these I was a kid (10-15 years ago maybe?) and they had coated paper bags instead of plastic bags on the inside so I'm not sure if you can do that anymore actually. Anyways, that's what those front perforations are for.

Of all the cereals you tasted in this video, my favorite has to be Frosted flakes, i love the texture so much ! (I live in France and they are called "Frosties" here. It's funny that they have an even more american-sounding name over here.) My fav cereal of all time is "Trésor", I think. I don't know if you can find them outside of Europe, though. They look like tiny pillows and they are filled with some kind of cream/paste-type thing, sometimes it's Nutella-flavored, sometimes it's plain chocolate. And they are absolutely amazing.

I mostly eat raisin bran anymore, Though last year I bought the multi-pak and took it to work as a snack, I ate them dry. Way back in the 70's my favorite was Super Sugar Crisp, now called Golden Crisp. Now that I HAVE to watch what I eat, eggs and waffels with real maple syrup sometimes, or I eat out and have a CHZ, bacon, and mushroom omelette with biscuits and strawberry jam.

You should look up the history of the creation of cereal. It was a long process of hit and miss cereal experiments! Took a long time for them to figure out what consistency of the cereal needed to be in order to hold up to the milk!
