Just to really worry you, there is another brand of Marmite from New Zealand, 😆 its different again but in the same 'family' as UK marmite and Vegemite. The factory is in Christchurch and had severe damage during the Christchurch earthquake. Production shut down for months and it was a hot topic of conversation on our news channels that it could not be brought anywhere. People were selling jars for stupid money.

@@timmartinl7855 I'm an Aussie too and just the smell gives me raptures! Vegemite on toast or Vegemite toast with grilled really sharp cheddar cheese, cheese, Vegemite and lettuce sandwiches - love it all. Whenever I travel to the UK, I always take a good sized jar with me so I can have Vegemite toast and a cup of Yorkshire Tea for breakfast (or a late night snack). I don't like Marmite because it's not salty enough and I don't like the runny texture.

I was once at a kids party where the kids were all playing while the parents were hanging around chatting near the food table. The kids hadn't stopped to eat yet and we were all trying to be adults and not go for the snacks before they did, but as soon as one of the parents bit the bullet and picked up a piece of fairy bread, the rest of us went for it. Let's just say, those kids didn't get a look in once we started. The fairy bread was gone in seconds 😂

You may not go back and read comments on older videos but I hope that one day you see this: The thing that overseas people don't appreciate about Vegemite is that we are literally weaned on the stuff, and I do not mean metaphorically, I mean LITERALLY! My daughter was born in 1981 and she was breastfed from the beginning. I took her to the local Baby Clinic (as you do) for checkups every couple of weeks. At around 3 months old, the clinic nurse recommended that I start supplementing the breast milk with 1/2 teaspoon of Vegemite dissolved into boiled water (for the extra Vitamin B and water). Around 6 months old, as they are starting to sit up at this age and can hold things, I am recommended giving her Milk Arrowroot biscuits (an Aussie classic) with a little bit of butter & Vegemite, so that she can gnaw away at them with her toothless gummy mouth. About 9=12 months, you add Vegemite "soldiers" - white bread with butter and Vegemite and cut into little strips - use the loaf crusts when they are younger as they hold up to the "gumming" better". From 1 years old onwards, they are ready for Vegemite sandwiches, cut into triangles when they are little but a staple part of every school kid's lunch and into adulthood - add cheese and/or tomato for some variety, but Vegemite sammies are part of our DNA.

I always prefered peanut butter to vegemite or devon as a kid but these days you can't take peanuts anywhere near a school or you will be accused of being some kind of monster. Devon is not a universal thing anymore as its not kosher or halal. Again the smiths crisps sandwich was really popular and common but is seen as an alert for neglect these days. It gets worse that the same tip top wonder white bread with added vitamins we had in the 70s and 80s with any of these ingredients makes all the Gluten intolerant people throw up. Its a different and complicated landscape if you try to treat 2023 food all as the same thing like 1981 school tuck shop. White or brown with devon, ham, peanut butter, vegemite, cheese, egg or salad for 50 cents, chocolate moove 30c. We remember it as good because that was all there was. That attitude at the time was "If it makes you sick, don't eat it". Today the attitude is "We can't serve you in case someone else gets sick". Both really suck as a business practice and people today are also too self important to check they aren't allergic before they order. Stalemate.

@@Mr101beers I loved my beer, my meat pies, my Vegemite and toast, my lasagne etc. but back in 2010 I lost 20 kg over a 6 week period for no apparent reason and thought the worst that I may have cancer. Had a heap of tests run on me and nothing showed up. I went to a stomach specialist and she said she thinks I am a a Coeliac. So I had a blood test for that and then a gastroscopy and yes I am Coeliac. So now I cant eat any of that good stuff without suffering for it. Those food allergies are no joke mate and I wouldn't wish them on anyone.

Quick note: Cheekies used to be called Chicos, and there is also another Allen's brand of lollie that was called Red Skins, that was changed to Red Ripper. Another note about butter; the butter in the US doesn't taste like the butter in Australia, the closest thing to it in the US is Kellygold Irish butter (that I found). The bread is also very different, it's very sweet and more like eating cake, or brioche. I made some for a Thanksgiving party I went to. Another interesting note is that when I wanted to make a Christmas trifle for my US friends, I had an awful time trying to find the ingredients, you guys didn't know what pouring custard was, and I couldn't find anywhere that sold a plain slab of sponge cake with no icing. Even finding ordinary crushed nuts were a problem. I managed to find Australian custard powder in the Wegners International section, I used pound cake, and slivered almonds instead. I used normal, heavy cream and whipped it for the topping. My host family enjoyed it immensely and, even though I had added sliced peaches, jelly, custard, cake, cream, the nuts , and raspberries and hundreds-and-thousands for decorations, they were surprised that it "wasn't sweet". I was gobsmacked. The US palette is conditioned to expect the high sugar content in everyday foods, and in my host's case, it surprised them to realise just how much.

Yes, butter is sweeter here in oz... not as sweet as french butter, but still creamy & sweet... you need that sweet to off set the saltiness. my husband is fully aussie,, he loves the stuff brought up on it. I wasn't my parents, parents immigrated from France after ww2... so I wasn't brought up on it... I put heaps of butter on really hot toast & thinly spread it very lightly... I have to be in the mood for it. My favourite because I adore turkish delight is the Fry's chocolate Turkish delight!

Can't believe you rated fairy bread so highly, lol. As for the Vegemite, you need to toast the bread till it's firm and golden brown, so the butter melts properly when you spread it. Then try to spread the Vegemite as evenly as possible. Glad you loved the Tim Tams. It'd be a crime not to 😅

One thing to note is that the fairy bread you had may have tasted a little different to what we have in Aus and NZ. US bread, if that's what you used, has considerably more sugar in it than over here. That could distort the sweetness and balance between the bread and the 100s & 1000s.

Hi Natasha and Debbie, loved this video. Tim Tams are a favorite with Aussie expats all over the world. Many Yankee friends have fallen in love with after visiting Australia. If you want to use up the Vegemite may I suggest toasting one side of a slice of bread. On the un toasted side spread a little vegemite, top with sliced tomato and thinly sliced cheese and grill. Its healthy and the taste of the vegemite is not prevalent. Best wishes Paul .

Tim tams look like penguins but are quite a different texture, apparently the biscuit in Penguins is harder. Everyone I know who has had both confirm Tim Tams are definitely better. I remember we had alot of Aussie products when i was younger, then they disappeared as i got older, so they remind me of being younger. G'day from down under! Great to see you reacting to some Aussie stuff - I've seen a few of your UK reaction videos. Vegemite is definitely an acquired taste because it's so strong but many Aussies are brought up on it as kids. It became very popular during World War 2 and was supplied in bulk to Australian troops due to its nutritional value and shelf life (but it was rationed to civilians). It has since morphed into a very "patriotic" Aussie spread and is also often used as a condiment in cooking.

The faces you pulled trying the Vegemite said it all, it’s definitely a love it or hate it food, like licorice, personally I like both Vegemite and Marmite but I’m with Debbie on the taste of licorice. The reason the Cherry Ripe doesn’t have that fake cherry flavour is because it’s real cherries. I laughed at your list of Tim Tam slam names. I have another one for you, thirty plus years ago when we first started enjoying our Tim Tams that way it was call a Tim Tam orgasm, it was only when it became more popular and widespread it started to be called a Tim Tam slam.
